Don't confuse Emo teenagers with everyone that plays a video game.
I've seen much much worse in Everquest, but don't for a second pretend that it is representative of that playerbase. |

That kid wasnt been serious afaik, people say shit like that all the time in games... internet humour I guess. Still seem pretty retarded arresting somebody for typing something on a keyboard. |

Its not stupid because you can never tell when someone is joking or being serious. If you were to assume he was joking and then he would really do it, how would you feel then? Real world is not a virtual gaming environment. You cant die and then just "reload" your life. Any threat at your life, whether coming from someone esle or yourself, should be treated seriously. In this case, the kid will surely have something to talk to his parents and will think twice before opening his yapper... unless he didn't learn his lesson the first time. In which case, he is destined to receive low blows all his life. I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time. |

I think the title of this thread should be something more along the lines of 'A dumb ass WoW" player as you are talking about 1 person as opposed to ALL WoW players or even 2 percent for that matter. -Currently looking forward to FFXIV -Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda |

ya, but the rep doesnt know the kid. Kid goes off and kills himself, traces his last conversation to a blizzard employee and his last words were "I am suicidal and that the game is the only thing I have to live for" wouldnt go over well. sounds ridiculous but just this past November a local kid committed suicide live via webcam. All the while people were in a chat room calling him names, egging him on and doing all the typical things people do when hidden annonymously online. The so-called stunt went on longer than expected and someone called 911 and found the boy dead. Authorities are attempting to locate several individuals in the chat room to hold them partially liable for allowing the boys suicide. I think someone attempting suicide, claiming to kill themselves online holds just as much weight as they did it in real life. A lot of younger folks out there really are disconnected with life using the internet as an escape. The problem is, its as much real life as anything else you say or do on a day-to-day basis and you need to be held accountable. |

If you think your problems are so bad that you can't think of any other way to solve them than killing yourself the world is better off without you. That goes double if said problems are related to video games. |

There was a young adult, Shawn Woolley age 21 who killed himself over a supposed broken relationship (his mother claims) within EQ, it is speculated that he met somebody while playing EQ and the relationship went south...he was found by his mother in his apartment on Thanksgiving, she went there to see if he wanted to come over for dinner since he wasn't picking up the phone. He played on the Vallon Zek server. EQ was still running when she found him, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His mother, Elizabeth Woolley has become a activist against MMO's and gaming companies who do not reveal the addiction level of their games, i believe she has taken SoE to court on several occasions but nothing came from it. Shawn has problems beyond this supposed in-game affair and i for one feel a deep remorse for his family and friends, as gamers we have to remember that some of us take it too far and as gamers we should try to step in, if we can, and try to help them see that a game is slowly taking over their lives. Here is information about Shawn, rest in peace brother. http://www.virtualworldlets.net/Resources/Hosted/Resource.php?Name=EverQuestBlame

Those types of players and that behavior is representative of any mmorpg community; period. Which is why the 'ol "but this has a better community" comments is flawed. |

Kid wasn't serious but you need to take talks like that serious anyway. You never know when you bump into a deeply disturbed individual online. People have killed themselfes before cause of videogames and it will happen again. Not that I blame games for it, they just act as a trigger. As much a trigger as lost love, severe loss, hatred, self loathing etc can trigger these things. |

What I find idiotic is that they handcuffed him as if he was a voilent criminal. Fucking ridicilous. But I guess policeofficers are known to be idiots... |

Blaming an MMO for someones suicide is like blaming a bridge for allowing people to jump from it to their deaths. May as well blame gun makers while were at it for all the horrible crimes and suicides that have been comitted with their guns. |

The issue is that people die all the time. I wager that 100X more people die riding motercycles or mountainclimbing, or scuba diving. yet there is little outrage against that. Shrug MMORPG Characters immortalized! |
