rp is best done in a sandbox game, b/c there EVERYONE is Rping and the world is constantly evolving. When people RP in an imaginary world, they expect there to be thieves and murderers that you have to avoid. If you don't want murderers in your RPing... well that's selective RPing, and I'm sure they would be happy in WoW in that case, there's no player run cities, player created laws, mob AI, mob migration and settlement of an area and blacklisting, and no sense of danger in traversing the world. But on the plus side, they won't get ganked RPing in WoW.

 

True because we all know there is nothing like true RP where after you kill the same toon for the 20th time you meet them again for the 21st battle.    Even in a FFA PvP sandbox game the RP is selective.

You want true hardcore PvP RP?  Delete your toons after each death and start again.

lol DF is like 20000000000 steps forward in the right direction, don't jinx it. Maybe perma death will be the next step forward (not my taste) who knows. This game isn't designed around perma death though, so it will never work, a game CAN be designed around perma death, where character progression is done more through knowledge of the wolrd and player skill than from character skills, levels, and gear, and you can continue playing from your son and daughter or something and get some inheritance kept in a guild city, if you had one. Or something like that, agian, not my cup of tea.

Except that, it won’t happen. That’s two types of player bases, which do not mix. Its not that the game system, or game itself won’t allow it. It’s the Community around this game.

Its not hard at all unless you lack imagination.  Speaking to the OP, yes there will be RP in Darkfall, probably quite a bit of it, as sandbox worlds are superior for the playstyle when compared to WoW/WAR/LotRo/everything else.

The PKers will probably drive off casual roleplayers, but those who truly want an immersive experience will probably find it here, and in similar games.

On topic, I think it is true that some RPers prefer to roleplay in a theme-park, or safe MMO . But there is a certain type who prefer sandbox and free world pvp. Just because they roleplay doesn't mean they also don't play the game.  Just depends which type you prefer.

the big diference between rp in darkfall is that when hector moron shows up in town and starts irritating the other role players by speaking ooc you can pull out a sword and kill him. At least thats what we did back in the orks of kor, and if you have your own town you can (iirc) put idiots on a kill list. Doent stop seiges of course, but rp doenst nessasarly mean without pvp skill

Everyone I know who RPs in MMO games has not done so since UO.  No current MMO games support our playstyle.  The lack of freedom in the EQ clones is disturbing to everyone I game with.  We have all been waiting for a game like UO to come around for a long time.

Its one thing to have a valid negative opinion on something but its another to have ONLY negative opinions on something, pick fights, and ignore positive evidence for the given subject. That's not being skeptical that's called being CYNICAL (or a troll), and that's just as bad as being a fanboi (ignoring all negative evidence on the given subject)

I myself feel aventurine's graphics are unproffessional looking (their animations and char models look like trash), their PR has been the worst in mmo history, and I worry that the inclusion of gigantic hitboxes, the cutting of directional swings, and slow combat will lead to the complete lack of twitch skill in combat and all it will be is guildwars w/out autoattack (combatwise)

all of which are very valid claims

Its been my experience that RP's and PvP'ers don't mix well.  With the type of "community" I'm expecting to see in DF, good luck to anyone that wants to RP.

BTW: Trolling is posting for the shear result of starting a flame war, or argument with no intent to discuss. Being cynical or critical is not trolling.

One would think that because this is a supposed sandbox, RPing would be easier. But what are you gonna RP as? RP is all about jumping in someone else's shoes, or making your own virtual destiny...but without any guidance (BACKSTORY!?) it's kinda hard. What's Darkfall's story? I'd like to read it, especially with the Orcs looking like Saturday morning cartoon characters. Also I think everyone will be too busy FFA PvPing and full looting to RP.

Yes it does b/c DF DOES have a backstory if you ever thought of looking at the website! And the environment is handcrafted  meaning there will be interesting things to look at (and make stories about) every where you go (according to beta testimonies)).

If DF is half of what it promises, the RP will be better in DF than any other game on the market, b/c the "story" of the game is constantly changing, mob locations constantly change, and cities and important locations always change. It will be a dynamic world and if you do something significant (slay a dragon, destroy a village), your actions don't get erased and reset for the next group of explorers to recreat your adventure. You also have the freedom to do w/e your RP heart wishes (build a house, find secret skills/dungeons, kill whoever you want, etc.)
