The title says it, what MMO really made you look twice and say, "Hey, this is a game of its own."

Its not an average MMO, questing, making money, and raiding. Its diffrent from all the others, but amazing at the same time.

Which MMO would you say is most set apart from the others, but great at the same time?

World of Warcraft.

Before you flame me, consider.. every game is designed for a specific niche. WAR is an RvR game. AoC is a PvP game. EVE is a space combat/economy game. LoTR is an RP game.

There's only ever been one game that has encompassed all playstyles and that is World of Warcraft.

Asheron's Call.

I haven't really thought too highly of games made after 2003, with the last being SWG.

WoW has it in a watered down generic sense.  They get a lot of the little things right, which other devs either ignore, don't care about, or don't have the resources to do.

Honestly, the most diverse games I've played are MUDS.  Nothing MMO's have done can even come close to comparing, they just have shiny graphics.

There are 3 kinds of people - those who can count, and those who can''t.

Well this is pretty much what I felt when I played Atlantica Online for the 1st time. Since the game is entirely different than those that I had played, including MMOs and MMORGPs as well. I guess the most appealing feature to me is the turn-based battle system which is totally unlike your typical MMOs that are hack-and-slashed based which I personally find dull and too repetitive. Another good featurea about this game is the level of gameplay involved with having a guild. Guild master can govern towns and eventually create countries from it. And the economic side aswell had made improvements to create somewhat a supply-and-demand like economy. Its also craft based so theres more on to it than mere finding items from mobs. Try checking this game out. Its far better than I had expected. hehe. Thats all guys! Thanks.

I really dislike WoW (See: Hate) but I'll try my best not to flame *lights small bonfire*.

Actually, a few stood out to me like this:

Tabula Rasa, you cannot disagree the came was innovative and fun.

Star Wars Galaxies, even post-NGE (I'm going to need that fire-proof suit) it's still fun and full of awesome features that make you look twice.

WAR, not so much the game, but the keep sieges just made me look at the game and say "Holy crap..." it's the first time I've seen so many players duking it out so heavily in an area.

And the first MUD I played, I was quite thrown back.

Now, onto WoW (I held off until now). It has it's own niche too, that is it tries to do everything and masters nothing. The PvP would be fun if it wasn't all gear based. The quests would be fun if they weren't all the same. I would like Blizzard if they weren't robbing me of my money by making me buy TBC to play WOTLK. LOTRO really has few RPers. It also does many things well, although it's mostly PvE with a great PvP element.

And just a little info, RvR is pretty much a fancy term for PvP. It just means two nations duke it out instead of Order v Order like WoW.

I have to agree with you.. Atlantica Online has been the most innovative game of 2008 in my opinion.. Probabbly they would win the best new game award from MMORPG..

Indeed. Wow aims to a wide market, but doesn't go way too deep in most facets it shows.

I love MMOs, but they've become limiting in lots of ways. MUDs and PnP RPG really give you alot more immersion and freedom, if you have a bit of immagination. In D&D, combat and crafting was just a small part of the things you could do. Having and managing a castle, an army, spying on rivals, having spells to control other people, to make you fly, etc etc etc. The game would reward you for using you head and getting out of tough spots rather than just killing the zillion mob with a sword or fireball.

City of Heroes/Villains. It has the best character customization in any MMO to date, lots of great power sets, fun and fast paced combat, and the fact that it's not based in a fantasy setting sets it apart from pretty much everything else that's been mentioned here.

There are a couple

IMHO, City of Heroes has withstood the trials of time and has only improved and stands out in the Genre.

The same can be said for EVE.

Guild Wars has stood out all these years also.

A runner up IMHO would be DDO, the game was a turd when it launched but over time it has shaped up to a pretty nice dungeon crawler.

Although LotR is a nice high quality game it just doesn't do enough to stand out from the crowd. It's still a very good game but it emulates everything else far to closely and fits that "questing, grinding, money and raiding" mode.

The strange tale of Tabula Rasa...just as the game was shaping up and coming into it's own NCSoft pulled the plug...and then continues to improve it by adding in everything the players have been begging for to flesh out the game like Mechs and Earth (a level cap area)...after they announce the closing. Had TR hung in there it probably would have shaped up into a really good game. We will never know now.
