On TV we watch sci-fi shows and on the computer we play fantasy games? Not many fantasy TV-shows around right? Not many science fiction MMOs around either. The few that have been made have been so bright and cute even the youngest of fools didnt wanna pay for it.
Why cant someone realize there isa big empty hole that needs to be filled. That big empty hole is my wallet. No, seriously, its the lack of a high quality science fiction MMO. The world in this new game needs to be mature, sexy, dark and unforgiving. A mature game for a maturer audience, not for young teens who love fantasy games with cartoonish little hobbits grinding their eyes out for meaningless gear. Make the game 18+ even? I dunno how many people would play this game, maybe only 500k or max 1 mil would play it? Dosnt really matter now does it, since you would be all millionairs anyway if "only" 500k played it. EVE is a sucess and has how many players? 250k subscribers? 300k? You dont need 11 mil players like WoW to make a huge profit.
Add some survival into the game like we have in Left 4 Dead and maybe some open PvP envirement (to add to the No bs, diehard, brutality) and maybe a player driven market? (think EVE?)
I know Earthrise is on its way, and me and my wife will pay and play it, but me and many other people would be very interested in a dark, mature, science fiction, horror, survival type of game. Add some military style to it and ill tell my wife to have your babies.

One mans Scifi is another mans fantasy. Although you wouldn't get any arguements from anyone calling high-fantasy nothing but fantasy. |

Warhammer 40k Online thats being made by Vigil Games is very dark and Gothic. Even tho these are from a different 40k PC game you can get the feel of the 40k Universe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-E1RcRvny8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu4ABhVd28U&feature=related And yes, Warhammer 40k was out before Starcraft. |

Vendetta online is sci-fi. I'm trying it out right now and it's pretty nice.
Although I'm not sure if you mean in-space or in-space station. Those are different types of sci-fi. In Vendetta online you own your spaceship and can go to different places for missions, mining and the like. I guess SWG would be the in-space station kind of MMO I think you're looking for, which in that case, is the only one out there. |

I believe we need more Sci-Fi MMO's. The game markets is filled with enough sword and board, hobit and elf, pre teen fantasy (WOW) type games. I am really looking forward to Earthrise and Fallen Earth. If they do make Warhammer 40k that would be sick!! |

I also would like to see more Sci-Fi MMOs. The problem is it is much harder to do a Sci-Fi MMO than a Fantasy MMO. In my view the best Sci-Fi MMOs will have many worlds to explore. They will also have character combat as well as ship combat. The best and one of the first paper and pencil Sci-Fi RPGs I have ever played is Traveller. It has great lore, ship combat, character combat, an excellent ship design system, and an overall gritty feel to it. It’s not perfect but its good enough that it has lasted in some form or another all these years. Again though, it takes a lot of work to set up a traveler game and make it good. |

I agree. Fantasy is relatively easy to pull off but the expectation for a sci fi game are bigger. For example, Tabula Rasa wasn't a bad game but the model it was based on was fantasy. I feel that if TR had had more elements that are specific to sci fi it would have done better. Also, I think this is what sci fi gamers are looking for. Not just a fantasy MMO with lasers, but a true sci fi game. |

Yes, more sci-fi but just don't turn it into a shooter. It's so insulting to an idea-focused genre like sci-fi. Give us more than pew-pew; give us exploration, trade, sleuthing and other vocations... A sci-fi game does not have to be a spacefaring game, by the way. Perfectly good sci-fi worlds can be created on earth, too. Dystopian visions like those in Blade Runner, Soylent Green, Brazil or Escape from New York are OK, too. Or maybe like in The Quiet Earth!... OK, that was a joke :)

Originally posted by Nikopol The whole combat orientation of MMOs is disturbing. If you think about it the only way players interact with each other is by a) attacking one another or b) grouping to attack something else. I feel that a good sci fi MMO could break out of this. EVE has shown that you can include trading, politics and corporations in a game and people will play. I would like an MMO were exploration and random missions were the norm instead of every player talking to the same first 100 NPC accomplishing the same first 1000 "quests" that in the end mean nothing As for an IP MMO, I would like to a good sci fi game cut from whole cloth. IP based MMOs, IMHO, suffer from fans not being satisfied with the effort and other non-fans not liking the game sticking so close to the story. I feel that SG will suffer from this. |

I agree, it amazes me that most media is very science fiction oriented, yet MMORPGs are so fantasy oriented. I personally don't care much for fantasy, but am almost forced to play it if I want to play an MMO. Give us more SCI-FI! Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic |

I suspect that it will come out in late 2009. They have not released an official date, but I would be surprised if it didn't release by the end of '09. I suppose they could be an early 2010 release but they were "Content Complete" as of Oct 3 this year. If I were placing a bet I would guess Q3 of 2009. |

Well if you guys are interested in Earthrise the beta sign up has been announced. Sign up will begin on 1/5/09. It is like Fallen Earth but more futuristic technology based. Also is more pvp centric.

Fallen Earths graphics looks like some kinda cruel joke...? Reminds me of the Darkfall gameplay video, wich made grown up men cry of embarresment. Earthrise graphics seems ok though and I will try that game out for sure. But is that the only good sci-fi game in development that is high quality? (and not a WoW-clone-in-space)

I agree. A dark, mature, +18 Sci-Fi MMORPG would be very nice. And I think people would like it. Too much fantasy on the market. We need some cyperpunk! =D |
