I cant belive it.
We live in a world where there are more than 6500 fantasy MMOs, and each and every one of them keeps flopping, while there is a huge demand for a dark/horror sci-fi MMO with *survival focus, and theres still not even one game like that. (ecxcept for Earthrise, but it aint out yet and not very dark.... and not very much "survival" focus...?)
Wth is going on? Im 36. I dont wanna run around in a cartoonish looking Hello Kitty fantasy world with little children and "grind for gear" for 25 hours a day.
Give me my f-ing game!
*Survival... think Left 4 Dead or something... or something new... i dunno... SOMETHING.

If it was Deus Ex Online (DXO)...YES...YES...YESSSSSSSS!!!!! FPS hybrid so it'll satisfy every player -- PvPer; PvEer; and especially explorers (the best thing about the DX universe, besides the storyline). Dark...no daytime in that universe, all at night. Dirty. Weapons galore (to satisfy the bloodlust types). Pacifists don't have to kill, they can stun or just sneak past baddies. Storyline to spook and get folks to actually read those datacubes; books; email terminals (and wanting more for immersion). Soundscore that fits the universe. NPC traders for trading some stuff; internet 1/2/3/4 for trading other stuff; nevermind the blackmarket. Crafting would be for making new augmentations and upgrades; let alone repairing the arsenal, and the fleet of nano-augmented and older mechs. Ugggghhhh....Me want another Deus Ex fix!!! -- ~Leonardo da Vinci |

Deus Ex Online...*salivates*
A good horror/survival mmo would be fantastic if it could be done (suspect having lots of other players about would lessen the tension inherent in survival type games when it feels like just you and a cityfull of zombies or whatever...) but yeah, if it could be done would offer a welcome change. Did you ever try Neocron 2 - that had some of the elements you describe; cyberpunk setting, sort of hybrid fps shooting system, tekkie crafting system (rubbish cyberspace system but hey-ho). Think it's still going but very few players last time I went and had a look 9which admittedly was some time ago...) ---------------------------- |

An MMORPG about horror/survival would be great. As would Deus Ex. If you're not using feint, you're not doing enough damage. Author of http://themmoexperience.blogspot.com and writer for http://www.negativegamer.com |

I remember seeing some survival horror mmo that was being developed almost a year ago. I cant remember the name and they didn't have much info just some concept art. IT had zombies in it and I got all excited. But until then Fallen Earth seems to be pretty decent. Its in post-apocalyptic setting it may not be dark or survival horror but it is Sci-fi at least.
No doubt the industry is flooded with fantasy games and IM starting to get tired of that genre. |

CCP (EVE Online) is developing "World of Darkness" from the White Wolf universe. 2011 is my guess. o.O |

Problem about it tho, is how can you instill fear of death into players in todays market? Can't punish them for dying, they would cry wolf. Can't make them work for the rewards, if it aint instant gratifications, they would cry wolf. Can't make travel take time and mean something, if they ain't at the boss in 0.1 second, they would cry wolf.
Back in the beginning of this milennia, a survival game would have made sense and might get good funding... But today? Only wow clones get funding and players.

Is this true? If this is true, I might not play anything else if it is done well. "There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit." — John Parry, to his son Will; "The Subtle Knife," by Phillip Pullman |

There is one horror/sci-fi mmo being currently being created by Funcom. Not a whole lot of news on it yet, but you can go to the forums and look for some info. The Secret World Forum link: http://www.darkdemonscrygaia.com/ |

the necroscope series!
DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES Except to Harry Keogh, Necroscope. And what they tell him is horrifying. In the Balkan mountains of Rumania, a terrible evil is growing. Long buried in hallowed ground, bound by earth and silver, the master vampire schemes and plots. Trapped in unlife, neither dead nor living, Thibor Ferenczy hungers for freedom and revenge. The vampire's human tool is Boris Dragosani, part of a super-secret Soviet spy agency. Dragosani is an avid pupil, eager to plumb the depthless evil of the vampire's mind. Ferenczy teaches Dragosani the awful skills of the necromancer, gives him the ability to rip secrets from the mind and bodies of the dead. Dragosani works not for Ferenczy's freedom but world domination. He will rule world with the knowledge raped from the dead. His only opponent: Harry Keogh, champion of the dead and the living. To protect Harry, the dead will do anything - even rise from their graves! |

Save up, buy a good duel/quad core, and play left 4 dead.
It's the closest you're going to get to a survival theme. And since you stated you don't have time to level up, it's quite the perfect game for you. I don't see why you don't play it. |

Sure, there are actually some rumours about such a game, R.I.F.T.S online but I havn't heard anything more than that the creator of Rifts Simbieda mentioned that they were talking about it. The Rifts setting would be perfect for that kind of game but an Alien game would work too (just keep the predators out, thank you). And even though it is not sci-fi a game in the Cthulu mythos by H.P Lovecraft would also be intresting, it would probably be more detective work than survival off course. I do agree that the MMOs are too similar today, almost just fantasy games with a few space opera exceptions like Eve and SWG. And most of them are aiming for all ages, a few more 18+ MMOs would be nice... |

what about a ww2 online type game with a server reset time. Humans verse zombie. Players start as human and must try to survive till reset. If a human dies they become a zombie. humans do not know who to trust because a human can turn on you also. Only way to become human again is to create a new character. crafting would be weapons, ammo, traps, defenses. make the world hugh with places to hide and fortify. guilds are groups of humans work to survive. challenge for people that want to try and stay human and something for he gankers and pvper's that want to play zombie and kill all the humans. makes some kind of rewards for zombie and humans "heros". |
