People think this game is going to be all ganking and immature trash talk and I want to stand up for what I think is the majority of Darkfall players.

I played UO, and what was special about UO was the community that was created in response to FFA, and the intensity inherent in a wide open game.

Games today are simple, you go attack and kill easy and boring mobs over and over again. One or two games have PvP, but usually very controlled and with safe zones and looting rules. They have crafting, but it almost never means anything. You might make some money, but it's not necessary to the game and there's no such thing as reputation. I hear boring on every message board, for every game I look at, and I look at a lot.

In UO, and hopefully Darkfall, crafting is essential. You're going to lose your equipment and need replacement gear. That gear will come from crafters, and you'll want to establish a relationship with a crafter you trust. That right there is what's missing from every other game for crafting. Bam, crafting is important and the economy is thriving in one rule.

Because the world is dangerous you'll learn to look around, travel in groups, plan things out more carefully giving the game the sense of danger that's totally lacking in every game now. Guilds will be more than just chat rooms, people will band together for safety and to get an advantage and guilds will come to your rescue or to enact revenge and so guilds will be close knit again.

There will be a place for gankers, and right alongside that place will be a place for people that only gank gankers. This gives you a chance to be a hero, and to make a difference. Reputation will mean something again and gankers will be rejected from respectable guilds.

Before you jumpe on the carebear or ganker bandwagon give Darkfall a chance as a good and exciting game where you can play a more exciting, more meaningful existence. Look to Eve as a guide to what will happen, given enough of a player base, except that the action will be on the ground, which is more to my taste and hopefully yours.

Crafters will be needed, hell even PVE farmers will be needed, you'll most probably need an escort but that'll deter most gank squads anyway.

Theres alot of scope in this game for those not interested in PvP - but until we know more about the alignment and faction system rules, we just don't know how realistic it will be, for them to enjoy themselves in the first month or so - it will most probably be chaos.

Did we play the same UO?

I played at launch, Was addicted then the Uncontrolled ganking started. No care, No Safe areas, No reason to play the game at all. If you wanted to play as a fisher man/ map maker(Me) you were completly screwed. Only way i might play this game if I hear there is no fing stealth. If there is then this is a gank fest and thats the end of the topic. will it die? no UO is 11? years old now...Nudderd and butcherd, But its still there.

Eve has the best pvp system of any game ive seen. You can be ganked anywhere by anyone. But in High sec. atleast there is Concord to gank them back. and there is More than Enough High sec. to keep me happy.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms.  I have to agree. For the first week or so of my time in UO it was a blast and the gank fest began. Nothing like being killed by a guy dyed pink named The gay golfer. Didn't even take my loot just since I was naked and mining just tossed my ore around. I imagine now it will be only worse.

I never played UO, I'm intrigued by this game.   It soundls like ganking is a good way to keep your crafters employed though, or can you just kill someone take their stuff then sell it back to them, cut out the middle man as it were.

Oh and are there going to be Halberds?

I played UO for a while and loved it. Yes it was harsh... yes if u werent on your game ud end up naked mining ore. Ive been there before I know it sucks. But once I got better and learned the game I ended up with a house full of riches and never naked mining ore... in some pretty fun battles.

UO wasnt a carebear game.. it had consequences. Its not WOW or WAR where EVERYBODY can do good. Its a cold world where you sink or swim... sounds like you sunk and never tried to swim. DF might not be for you.

Take it from someone who knows... if that turned you off to UO, DF wont be for you. Thats not an insult just saying peopel have different opinions to what fun is

That was years ago, when people where were decent. Now people is garbage in the 50% of cases, which is more than enough to ruin any gaming experience.

I think there are far more casual PvPers (people who PvP sometimes) than hardcore PvPers. This is the reason few full PvP games are successful. We'll see how well this game really does.

That is a fair point.

Back in UO and  AC days there was a different bunch of gamers in MMOs. The crowd was mostly older people who grew up with D&D and Muds. Sure there were asshats but most people were fairly respectfull.

Now you are going to have the PVP crowd that grew up with Halo. I think it could be a bit different world then what you all remember from UO, AC and Shadowbane.

Limiting an mmo to only one specific type of player is a lot like inbreeding.  You end up with several generations of progressively more handicap and freakish mutants until the gene pool decides to put you out of your pathetic misery.

Variety is the spice of life, and as it turns out, games as well. You gotta get out there, mix it up, spread those wild oats. I think there is room for many types of players in Darkfall. The more kinds of players there are, the richer the experience will be for everyone. PK's want people to kill. Anti-Pk's want people to protect. Crafters want people who want their goods. Explorers want to see places they havent seen before. Achievers want to become stronger and they want people to see that they have done so. And I think many people across all types want to be part of a game that has a little more meaning because you can leave a more permanant impact on the world.

It's an ecosystem. It remains to be seen how well balanced that ecosystem will be. But it will no doubt be much stronger if it has a greater variety of players with different interests to fill every niche within the game.

Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.

This.

You forget that the glory days you are remembering of UO are long gone.  People know how to play games now.  People don't play them like they used to..

Although the one character per server rule will be nice.

Nothing you said made any sense. You make it sound like UO didn't have safe zones by pointing out that it's one of the great things about EVE when, in fact, UO did have safe zones (towns). You could even fish in town, so maybe the reason you didn't enjoy the game is because you didn't even realize there were ways to work around your problems.

By the way, Darkfall supposedly does not have stealth/hiding.

I am 17 years old, was too young when UO/AC was still around.

Honestly, I am very jealous of you guys... My first MMO was WoW and I joined a guild and literally felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of idiot a-holes. I really wish I could have experienced real MMO play during the UO AC days, but I guess that will never come back, and most of those players aren't around anymore, and if they are, they are much more rare than the others.

Gaming has evolved greatly nowadays, but the communities of a few games have gotten more and more shallow, save a few great ones (DDO, for example). But I truly am jealous, and would give away all these bland new MMOs to play the oldies the way they once were.

I think Safwd and Murdus got a point, I think the gamers have changed more than the games. You could make a remake of UO and Everquest with exactly the same features but modern graphics but it still wouldn't be the same thing.

In the old days RPG gamers usually played pen and paper games too, and that affected both how they saw the games and the community as whole. Today few people does that and now that.

I never played UO or EQ, just Meridian 59 and Linage but still, the gaming crowd are different today, both on good and bad terms. However today full PvP games tend to attract certain crowds, while other players go to other kind of games. In UO time everybody played UO because there were nothing else to play. The RP players, the PvPers, the builders, the explorers... All together. I don't think we will see that again.

I am deffinatly not saying that young people cannot play or play bad however, I do play with people of all ages and some of the really good players are almost noobs but the moron % is sure up in MMOs nowadays.

Anyways my point is that you're not gonna get your UO back because it is you and the other players that have changed. Even the earliest MMO players are not really the same as they were once. Everything changes.

I plan on playing this game if and when it does release, I do not plan on just PVPing as there is more to the game than just that, there is PVE content galore actual quests not fed-ex missions, dev run events, I plan on crafting and harvesting and building cities with my clan, so for those of you that think its all about PVP it isnt , I recommend for those who are interested or curious about the features here is a link here forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php enjoy!!!

I like carebears the more the merrier!  I also like to see the MMO I play be sucessful.   You can't have sucess without alot of players carebears and killers alike...   If you have a lack of players then the game gets hardly any funds meaning it will start to lose staff and it was just go down hill untill it ends up looking like Shadowbane.

Yes the game had little towns. and moderiate citys. Eve has a Huge Fing Core of space that i can safly wander around in. I could go from tradeing hub to Tradeing hub w/o getting ganked (As long as i wasent stupid). UO Did not have that. The odd thief in town was anoying but i could deal with it. Not being able to walk out side the town Border was BS tho.
