(Repost from the DF forums, I thought it was interesting and I had not seen alot of the Screenshots.) Have you guys actually looked at all of the screenshots? No, not just the visuals section from the homepage. There's way more. I hear a lot of people complaining about graphics and what not, what kind of fluff there is and everything. Look at these pictures of the races. There's tons of different armors, some weapons, robes, tons. I'm under the impression that a lot of people have not checked out the rest of the screens besides the visuals section. For the people who like fluff.. you should check them out. They have some awesome looking armors and weapons. http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/dwarves_06 http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/dwarves_02 http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/orks_03 http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/mirdain_02 http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/humans_05 http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/alfar_02 http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/humans_04 http://www.darkfallonline.com/galler...gitalWeek/40_G Visual screens, Race screens, ADW Screens All I'm saying is that, a lot of your questions can be answered by looking at the screens. These were a little more hidden than other screens, but just look at the different types of weaponry, armors, and everything. It's quite awesome, and the graphic quality is high. |

Well I see many posts saying that DF graphics look like EQ 1 ect........... I know some people prefer diffrent graphics (more like WoW, cartoonish) but everyone has to agree the graphics look good for what they are going for (a more realistic look). |

Animations I will agree with. Lack of info......... http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/169533/page/2I have Dev Journal 16 and up linked in a post I made in that thread, there are also several other links in that thread that have a ton of info. I agree with those that complain about the official site for DF, it is outdated and lacking in info. However there is a great deal of info for DFO out there. Just not in a localised area, which of course it should be lol. |

Some nice shots in there. The environments look pretty diverse and well detailed. I noticed some faceting around the outside of the moon in one shot, which tells me it's an actual 3D model and not a flat bitmap as is used in other MMOs. I know in EQ2 they use 3D models for the moon and it actually lights in real time, creating accurate moon phases based on where the sun is in the sky.. Once I saw a near eclipse in EQ2; the moon was almost in front of the sun. That was really cool. Now that's not something that makes for better gameplay... but it's a nice touch and adds a degree of realism to it; something I tend to pay attention to in a game. The characters don't look bad at all either; nothing I saw in those shots made me cringe at all... which is notable (at least for me, heheh) since in many MMOs - especially those using DX9+ tech - the environments look great while the character models look like crap. So, if nothing else, it's a pretty good looking game. How that translates into actual gameplay and performance once thousands are hitting the servers all at the same time is another story. But I guess we'll see that next year :)

I love the leaf hanging down in the upper leftish side of the screen. http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/orks_02?full=1 The detail is great. |

Yea I hated in WoW how most of the shield are tiny and none looked real at all. Here are two more screens of awsome shields: http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/humans_06 http://www.darkfallonline.com/gallery/races/humans_02 The human male looks really badass. |

In my opinion Orks shouldn't have matching shiny armor (like one of those earlier pics). That's not really in their personality. They'll mix and match and piece together whatever they can get their hands on. I'd almost like to see Orks get some kind of a bonus for each piece of armor that is different that they equip. That way it would encourage them to be more ad-hoc looking. Again... my opinion on what I think the Orks for DarkFall should look like... obviously others my disagree. |

Yeah it's small details like the above that get me into the graphics. It literally looks as if he just pulled it off of a crate and put a strap on the back to make it a shield lol. You can even see the nail holes on the end of the board lol. |

I think the graphics are decent and are "good enough". I think the past couple of years we have seen many graphically good mmo's that just suck. I think of it this way. If you had a mmo dev company how many art staff, animators, and such would you have compared to how many programmers. I rather use my founds for programmers that create a great combat system then have insane art with crappy game play or lag. |

I know yeah. I really can't understand why people always knock the graphics of Darkfall, they're great. Well, actually I can: It's because of the gameplay video, which Tasos' has told us is running in low quality on a 6000 series graphics card. Graphic fanatics watch that, and think "ugh" I suppose. Can't understand why they did it on low quality though, I mean, wouldn't they want to show off the visuals in their game?

Originally posted by strongaxe Just wanted to comment on the "real" aspect of what you put in there. Has nothing to do with WoW, or any other MMO.
One-handed shields are actually more "realistic" if they are smaller; when used with a sword type weapon. The bigger one-handed shields were usually used with a spear/javelin type weapon. Which was useful in creating the "shield wall" of the day to fend off calvary charges.
Some of the bigger shields were also used by calvary to hang off their shoulder to cover their non-weapon arm. They had to hang the shield off their shoulder because they needed one hand to manage the horse and the other hand to swing their weapon. They basically tried to keep their shield side to the enemy until they were ready to attack at which point they swung their horse around and struck. If you read up on the Battle of Hastings this strategy is apparent from both sides.
The one side is employing the shield wall with the spear and javelins bristling from it to counter the calvary charges. The other side is wearing their shoulder shields to protect them as they ride by and toss their own javelin to inflict what damage they could before riding back down the hill to "re-load" and then come back for another "drive-by"
Then there are the really big shields that the medieval knights used... but they had a squire that carried that for them.
I'm not saying that those "bigger" shields in the sreenshots you posted are necessarily "unrealistic"... it's just that especially when using them with swords and in an attack, the smaller shields were more common.

In all honesty? Tasos has always held the stance that they know they can deliver on MORE than they promised. The reason I believe him is for the fact they never give away to much. We see a vid in low res and are still willing to play. We play and the graphics > the low res vid and we go OMG! No matter how much info or visuals we get, you can garuntee Tasos hasn't shown us the best. This is the exact opposite approach from traditional AAA titles lol. Show the best we could possibly do in media/trailers heck even throw in an unrealistic CGI trailer to make it look like it's even better, only for players to end up dissapointed.
I mean AoC went with there DX10 version to promote the game, and then a week before release informed everyone that DX10 didn't work yet lol.
I mean a good strategy is to give people enough to keep following the game, but don't lay all your cards out on the table. You want that Ace up your sleeve. |
