A very interesting development.  Not clear what it means, in brass tacks terms, but a very interesting development.

EDIT:  Just noticed this was in the game's pre-release forums.  Didn't mean to repeat, but on the other hand I think this is big enough news to warrant a main forum post.

Hopefully this will remove the nay sayers who argued micro transactions can't be a successful business model.

Why? Have they even shed any light on the crafting details yet? It's important to remember this is NOT SWG.

TWILIGHT ONION!

Microtransactions can work VERY well. If done properly, look at Requiem bloodymare, they do it very well, most of the 30 day benefits can be gotten in a little bunddle for 15 dollars, and there is an optional bunddle with same benefits just lesser % so instead of 30% like 15% exp bonus. Those systems work very well! If I can see another game working like Requiem in a fair balanced way, and with a good strong game play and fun game as well. I would love to see a cash shop game get it right fair. I wish they used Requiem as an example.

This is probably the most shocking news of the year. There is no chance in hell I will participate in a MT game. They might as well make all the characters anime. Pathetic.

yes, they have shed light on crafting and this shed a bit more!

Will there be Crafting?
Yes, there will be crafting. Lightsaber crafting is an important part of any force sensitive user. Moisture farming however, likely will not be. With such a story driven foundation players will most likely find that crafting is suited to enhancing the game rather than detracting from it.

This will be a better version of AoC being very story scripted, better than SWG as it will have a real conflict and worse than any game that has real crafting.

It will be all about the pew pew, or rather, whooohoooosh.... oh, yeah, and collect 10 thingamabob to make your saber better!

Want that new outfit, sure!  You can buy it in our shop for $3.00.

Crafters got F*CKED!

I wont say I am surprised. All the major players are moving into microtransactions... this is where the future is for gaming. People will adapt.

I personally think one of the best examples of a microtransaction based game is Entropia Universe. This game uses microtransactions... and does it in a way that actually makes the game better for it.

When are dev's going to learn; I mean they had it right 8 years ago.

Folks do not value items they buy.

Folks do not value easy items that everyone acquires from easy questing.

Folks only value items they work for in-game.  Period.

This is the future of online games. Unless you can get the player base that WoW has, you have to find alternate ways of increasing your profit margin. MMOs are now big business, and are following the same historical timelines that computer games have. The difference is that a single player computer game can still be developed by a small independent company or developer, MMOs can't. They are expensive to develop and run, and the costs aren't neccessarily going down. With the reccession here, it's only going to get worst. Companies and Venture Captialists aren't going to fund anything that is "innovative", or different then what is out there.

You can argue until you're blue in the face about what people want, but the truth is you don't know what they want. You know what you want, and that's about as far as you can go. People like WoW that is proven, people don't like Tabula Rasa, that's also been proven. Everything else is idle speculation.

For a lot of the hardcore posters here, the reality is they may have to look for a different hobby.

You know, the guys in charge of Bioware said they were doing this back 2 AGDC ago. There were all impressed with the business model back then.

With the recent failure of the monthly sub model, who is honestly surprised?

My only concern is recent monthly sub games failed mainly because of quality, not because of the fee....the fees just compounded the failure.

Oh well, so is our fate. Just hope the game is good I guess...its not gonna cost you anything to try it lol....

If great MTG s start coming out the hopefuly these minor pointless pure grindfesting piles of crap will vanish leaving the gaming world with great free to play games along side the added option of slight bonuses such as 10% extra exp. I don't mind playing a MTG aslong as the items people buy don't benefit in PvP. Simply put if they sell things such as 'Super lightsabre 4000' I won't play but if it's just exp/pots then I don't see the problem. On the bright side it will attract a lot more people to MMORPGs who currenetly cant afford the fees.

Honestly, If you cannot afford the fees ($15 a month), or the box (Sadly overpriced at $50 at release, $10 three months later), you should not be playing games, online, or with your life.

The same goes for Micro-Transactions, which frankly could mean anything is up for sale. Bioware has made no other statement other than they thought it was a great idea.

I expect a poor bioware spokesperson is about to be removed for making a statement they endorsed.

The problem with your post? We are not dealing with an independent developer. We are not dealing with a unknown Intellectual Property. We are not dealing with a game philosophy that is conceptual. Bioware/LucasArts knows exactly what they intend to do with this title.

What we are not talking about is a system where Bioware somehow needs to come up with creative ways to increase developement revenue. They have secured revenue. If anything, your "recession" comment makes games even more attractive (time per dollar).

You said "You don't know what they want. You don't know what they want..." I get it, neither do you. I just know what I want to play. Which mean moving from a Star Wars Universe riffe with possibility to one riffe with nit-picking micro-transactions is nothing more than complete insult.

For the new hobby, if this game is your upcoming hobby, I suggest you find a new one as well, because it is going to change...

They want RMT, fine. Then there better be no client fee and no monthly fee. Otherwise, forget it.
