So apparently, SWTOR will have a microtransaction model. http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/56292
Meh. It seems more and more like they are ripping out everything that makes an MMO an MMO (except for that cash-flow). |

Well consign that one to the dustbin of MMO history. "Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice." ~Greys Law |

I'd like a lot more details on this but it sounds like pretty crappy news... |

Well, RIP SW:TOR. Was looking forward to this game just because I love Star Wars so much, but I can't say my hopes were incredibly high. Oh well, now I don't have to follow this game. Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic |

So is this like the old days of AOL where you pay for time by the hour? Also item shops? WTF? lol Isn't this what Smed just did with EQ2 Eq1? Well I guess if it's free you will see shit loads of people playing it, but whether they will actually stay playing it is another story. |

Ditto. Not jumping ship just quite yet..........gotta admit it's getting harder and harder not to though. They (EA/Bioware/LucasArts...someone) really need to give a bit more concrete info on this now that the info (or a vague double speak blurb) is out there. |

Microtransactions are fine, but only in games that are free to play. If SWTOR has a monthly subscription fee, I will most definitly pass on that one. |

I think they mean Pay-as-you-go, pay for content. |

I don't even know what the hell they were trying to say in this article. - "The recent launch of Warhammer [Online] is a great example of that." Warhammer is subscription based. I think the comments from the Blizzard crew is starting to make more sense when they said the game will be successful, but the company needs to brace itself for player opinion. So far, Bioware has shown they don't get the MMO industry at large. This statement has nothing to do with SWG by the way. But it sounds like a subscription with a microtransaction model, mixed with a single player game, next to? So pay for the box, play the game, subscribe to the game to keep playing, then micro-transaction to keep up? What's next? A card game? Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom. Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR. |

If it has a monthly fee, I would be more apt to play it. If it mixes a monthly fee with a microtranction system, just simply no. George Lucas, a man who has not had an original idea since 1981, has made quite enough money from my childhood obsession. Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom. Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR. |

I had the impression there would be no monthly fee www.massively.com/2008/12/09/star-wars-the-old-republic-to-be-microtransaction-based/ EA has announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will not be subscription-based. Instead, the title will be gain revenue from a microtransactional model. Shacknews reports this surprising tidbit from a conference call held by the mega-publisher earlier today. Said CEO John Riccitiello, "The Star Wars online MMO [is a] mid-session game, microtransaction-based. You'll be hearing more about those in the February [conference] call." |
