If we take a long look at the feature list from darkfalls own homepage, what we see is an endless stream of promises. Who here believes Aventurine can deliver on such a deep and varied game, with a small development team, where their engine has been swapped several times and where we literally haven't seen any examples of most of the below? And why believe when there is not one piece of credible evidence they can deliver? Look at the features and FAQ info from their website, quoted in full context: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. smooth day/night cycles. Sail your ship through rough seas, then become hampered by fog as the waters calm. Struggle as your battlefield-bound army marches into a severe storm. There are many elements that come into play in Darkfall, and a casual player can have as much fun playing the game, and possibly be more successful than a hard core gamer, in some fields. 67. 68. 69. 70. 71. 72. 73. 74. Supposedly this game features all this. They have tons of monsters, NPC hirelings that can get advanced orders and do what the player does, they can be player vendors, there are five continents incl. TRACKLESS water depths and underworld. Where are the videos? Where are videos of just a fragments of the spells and these water depths or NPC hirelings? How can this small team create and balance this game? With hundreds of unique skills in a skill system? Where are any supporting evidence that all this exists? They have multi-language support already? Really? Tasos says the game is feature complete and ready? And there is varied ressources built into the game? Think about how complex such a system is to code and create. Yet Darkfall can do this where everyone else fail? Yet you can make all that "weapons, tools, armor, clothing, food, containers, furniture, jewelry" There is even repair and decay mechanics. Darkfall offers "Darkfall features an extremely sophisticated item creator, which will enable players to create powerful items, like weapons, jewelry, armor, wands, potions, food and more." But AoC and WAR could hardly implement a fraction of all that with all their $ and large development team. They have "Lesser Magic, Greater Magic, Element of Fire, Element of Earth, Element of Water, Element of Air, Witchcraft, Spell Chanting, Necromancy, Wild Magic, Arcane Magic, and Ritual Magic" where AoC and WAR is really limited compared to this. AoC had hardly tested or getting to work most of their skills and powers at launch. Yet Darkfall offers 12 schools of magic.. What about the servers, they haven't even been tested yet and there are supposed to be tens of thousands sharing them. No mention of instances at all. And yet there are tons of races and details to the combat and it is twitch based and second generation. Where are the videos of all the different races in combat and the videos of a working crafting system? And what about all the creatures and monsters? They even promises a hundred dungeons. Sure. Right.
EVEN IF they had a development of 500 and large company and $ behind them I would still doubt them. But this is just plain silly. I love sandbox, skill-based games, but that doesn't mean I can not call out a development "company" that is obviously bogus..

It's been quite awhile since that list was updated.
I didn't go through the whole thing again but off the top of my head:
--- Prestige classes are out for Release, they still want to bring them back at some time --- Pets are out, possibly permanently --- Hirelings are out, possibly permanently
Those are the ones I know of off the top of my head. There may be others as well.
Edit: This has actually been one of my biggest complaints about Tasos and Aventurine. Good luck finding an up-to-date listing of what Features are actually planned for being in at Release. The only thing recently that Tasos has said is "Feature Complete". Those items I listed above I know about from reading on the official forums. But, obviously there may have been other "announcements" that I've missed.
My personal opinion on it. If you haven't heard Tasos or Aventurine talk about a feature recently, or you haven't seen it in one of the recent videos or screenshots... Probably safe to assume it didn't make it in for Release. I could be completely wrong on that assumption, but that is what I'm going with until I get a chance to try the game for myself. |

The removal of pets really disappointed me. Ive always loved pet classes, and I was intrigued by how they were going to implement them given the fps type enviroment. |

this thread needs a sticky in my opinion, I looked at the DF website but couldn't find as much specific information as this. I found thier FAQ to be extremely vague, I have heard followers of DF to make these claims but don't remember anything defianate from Aventurine. This should be stickied for post Jan 22nd, I'd love to see if what the fans have been saying is true. If so I'll buy it in a heartbeat, but in all honesty I don't see how it could be possible for 30 semi-pro code crunchers in Greece to do it without a proper beta even!

Ah yes, of course. Silly me. Yes, they really should update the page. But about the feature list, if they don't give out preorders and let people first try the game before buying it, what would they gain by hiding things/lying? It really is simple as that IMO. |

Well the thing is that they have been working on this game for like 8 years, so I am pretty sure they do have all this in the game. If you are that skeptical about then find a beta tester and ask him about it in a PM or over AIM or something like that. End of story. |

So where is Original Eggplant or whatever he is called.. come tell us all how they created this feature complete mmo with such a small team? A huge open world, twitchy combat mechanics? You can make kingdoms and more in depth ressources and crafting than anyone else? Can they even just create that many skills and test them in this time and create all the spell effects? What happened with the whole pirating business? Where are the proof??? Enlighten us!

Maybe because they haven't spend millions to let the big public know that the game even exists? Maybe they prefer a slower start? One reason could also be that they still can't give exact date for NA launch? Take your pick. |

Those are not replies. If the game releases in Europe in January why not take preorders? Prefer a slower start? Jeeeezess.. how old are you? Have you ever heard of a company that wanted to earn less money?????

So far, no one has put forth a plausible reason for not taking pre-orders before Xmas, when your release is Jan 22, 2009. Perhaps their Publisher is just not up to the task. |
