I started my mmorpg gaming with anarchy online back when it came out. I'd already tried EQ, but never really got into the grindy, fantasy feel of it. AO was my first love. Time, and GFs came and went and time for gaming got limited as my education got a bit more priority. Finally, no more gaming. never had time to get anything done without playing for hours and hours on end. Camping bosses, gathering clan for events, getting together teams of the right composition and grind grind grind.

Then, along comes CoX. I started playing at launch and played my first character, a rad/rad defender and had a blast (pun intended). With a serious case of altitis an NRG/NRG blaster and spikes/DA scrapper were right around the corner, soon followed by a stone/stone tank. And I loved it.

More time passed and even CoX was to time consuming. I played Wow to 60, then 70 with BC. I played EVE and still do. But I always come back to CoX. Theres just something incredibly satisfying about putting on a cape and costume and going apeshit on criminals/do-gooders :)

CoX is a game I always come back to and love to bits. I love the RP, the storylines, the mechanics and the balance. And most of all I love the people who play it. Laid back adults looking for a good time mostly.

Damn it, I'm resubbing this christmas again :)

I like the community as well but I think the game is lacking in a lot of respects I played from launch for a total of maybe about a year at different times but never encountered any true rp and the repetitious mission system really needs to be fixed but I can certainly see why someone would like and play the game and I wish you continue fun and success.

Jax, this is the best general critisism I've heard about CoX, and I am glad to see someone say it so simply and without rancor.

I agree that there is not much role-playing in this game. There is one server, Virtue, which is unofficially known as the RP server, and there you will find a healthy RP population. Everywhere else in the game, it seems to be a personal choice, and when RPing is observed, it is random and fleeting.

You are correct in that the game truly needs to break from the repetitious mission syndrome. New foes to fight with new power sets, in new zones, or even the same old missions with new tilesets, allieviate the grind for a while but what they really need is a good writer to add some content to their great big bag of tricks. That said, the bag of tricks is very impressive, and continues to please as long as the devs keep churning them out. One wonders how much money they could save with some resourceful writing instead --- and how much they could make (!!!) --- if they truly addressed this issue.

But our devs are in effect "engineers," and the engineers that I know (and I know quite a few!) AND hear tell of... Well they just don't put as much value in the concept of story telling as perhaps they should. It takes a well-thought-out epic to make a concisely worded comic book. One that's worth reading, anyway.

I agree, they could use a straight-up comic-book writer on the team. If they let him/her really have their way with the universe and mythos behind everything the CoX would be utterly kick-ass! But, as it stands now I just absolutely LOVE making a character and running around and beating stuff down. It is great. Really, my only gripe is I find that there is not enough "money" for characters in the early levels and apparently truck-loads of it later on! Cuz even the early level enhancements are kind of expensive, and having a power unslotted makes you suck in missions. Street-grinding you're still good, but get inside a mission and you'll be learning the fastest route back from the hospital! So yeah, that sucks. Unless you know somebody with a rich level 50, or are in a well-funded SG/VG. Which most of my characters are not. Ah well. This was my first MMO [I got to play in beta as my first mmo experience!], but I had to give it up a few years ago. Now, I got to come back and it's like going home again. Sure, I still play WoW. I'll always play WoW. But CoH, and now CoV that's kismet!

Heh. I believe the issue is being adressed, if somewhat indirectly, through the upcoming Issue.

I'm pretty sure we'll see some wonderful stories written by our most devoted roleplayers when the Architect comes out. Maybe that'll never make up for the lack of "professional story-writer", but I'm ready to bet that we have some talented guys just waiting for the tools to be released to drown us in an epic tale of superhero adventuring !

I hope you are right Neo.

It does seem to me however that the folks with the creative writing skills come from different planets than those with the dev skills, and ne'r do the two ever meet. Just because one can can use the tools, or even role play, with admirable skill, doesn't mean a story line is worth propogating. And I am sure the devs would argue that just because a storyline is worth propogating, it's not neccesarily something they can integrate into the game.

That said, the customizible missions/arcs are most certianly another of those awesome tricks they consistently peel off and throw at us to keep us amused. And I am all for it...as a stop-gap...until I can savor some real content.  =)

What i love about this game is how social it is. I find myself hanging out in Atlas just talking with peeps then get picked up on a mission team and have a blast. Its also a high replay value you can make toon after toon and not get bored rolling them at least thats how i feel

Things I really liked about this game:
1) Ability to play with friends, no matter what level they are compared to you (this is huge since in most MMO's once you out level your friends you can't do missions together   )
2) Character customization.
3) I liked the combat both on own and in a group.

What I didn't like about this game (and what drove me away fairly quickly:
The repetition.

If the devs could develop the game so it had different landscape, different missions, and keep it interesting I think I could play this game with my friends for a long time. If they ever did, I would give this game another go.

why must i be nice to people that have no clue, are lying, or are just stupid?

i really like the flashbacks.  you can always play any level of content that you desire with flashbacks (and malefactoring/exemplaring).

i'm thinking MA (mission architect) will open up a whole new world of play... or, i'm hoping it will.  if it's done extensively enough; then, i can see a whole new world of player fiction coming to life.  heck, it could almost turn into an online version of a PNP game.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Honestly, I never witnessed any roleplaying in the game.  I did enjoy the game for awhile though.  It was different from other MMORPG's I have played in the past and present.  It has a very interesting storyline to it and I love the character customization.

Most of you mentioned another good part, the community, there are a  lot of interesting and fun people who play the game.  Made running instances a lot more interesting to be around fun people.  It does get rather repetitious however.  The missions seem to be the same routine over and over.  After a few months of that, I was ready to try something new.

It's nice if you don't play it all the time and are just looking to beat the snot out of someone for an hour or two a night.

if it weren't for the repeat offenders network -- i would never run a TF or an SF.  i think finding the right community can make/break any game for you.

Roleplay is scarce on the majority of servers. Virtue is exactly the opposite though. Where most are 5-10% rp virtue seems to be about 90% rp.

Yeah, on Virtue the non rp Super Groups/Villain Groups have to advertise they're non-rp. Everywhere else it's the rp groups that have to advertise that they're an rp group. Role-playing really is dominant on Virtue. Too bad it's not as wide-spread. It would be nice to have such creativity spread throughout the game instead of crammed into one server.

the roleplaying i've seen has been... varied.

there's been times when someone played narrator the entire mission.

there's been other times when everyone was rp'ing their toon's story.  throwing in elements of their origin and why they're there, and "roleplaying" what's going on, which makes for a looooooooot of talking and is kinda... weird.

i'm working with a new rp project on virtue "paragon noir detective agency", and i'm thinking our rp will end up with us not talking about RL stuff while adventuring and writing up the grand-storyline for individuals to read.  any information in the bio or story, about individual characters, is assumed to be known by all, so as to prevent people overflowing the actual missions with tales of their origin.
