Um, no, it's being made by swedes who have previous MMO developing experience.

Download this presentation of the new features of the U3 engine:

www.unrealtechnology.com/Downloads/Videos/GDC2008_UnrealDemos_hi.wmv (click "save as" - 30mb download)

At about the 3 minute mark they demonstrate the "High Density Crowds" feature.

That's an impressive demonstration... but, even AoC can handle having hundreds of NPCs on screen at the same time. It's just not the same with players. It's certainly an advantage for Star Vault that Epic Games will want to show the world how great the Unreal Engine is as a backbone for an MMO, though.

And, as for world size, it's a manner of preference. I know a lot of people prefer a compact world so they can have pvp action 24/7. If that was important to me, I'd rather play Counterstrike or Call of Duty, though. In an MMO, I like to be able to get off the grid in relative safety once in a while, but that's just me. Yes, I know I could go play a single-player game for that. :p

Well, AoC isn't using the U3 engine.

As for the world size, the devs would like it to be bigger, but they simply don't have the man power and time to increase its size and keep the quality that they wish to have. The size of the world planned for launch is 1/6th of the total land mass they have planned.

AOC has an engine that causes the game to slow down to a crawl with 50 players on screen, but can run smoothly with hundreds of NPCs on screen. That's the only reason to bring it up. Rendering players is not the same as rendering NPCs when it comes to performance, even if they look the same.

And yes, I know the MO team plans to have only a small part of the landmass at launch. It's sensible, and probably the main reason to believe they can actually release the game this year.

Still, we all know how priorities change after release. Players have a hard time accepting that devs work on "new content" while the old is still buggy and unbalanced, so any major content patches are likely to get pushed back even if the game releases on time.

I think Darkfall will be a better game at launch simply because so much more time has been poured into it. About 30 developers have been working on DFO for several years. Star Vault had 10 employees one year ago, and din't exist until 2006. Before it was founded, Mortal Online was just a patented idea. One man with an idea, working on design documents.

Anyway, I'll try both at launch. My expectations are just much higher for Darkfall since I pretty much know what the game will be like, and I know I'll enjoy it.. Everything that interests me about MO is already in Darkfall, so for MO to be a better game for me, it'll have to do the same things better. I just hope they don't launch at the same time, or I'll have to quit my job.

*Darkfall:
Skillbased progression
Craft any item
Ships
Racial restrictions of alts
Actual Beta

*Mortal Online:
Classes but "no grind" (?)
Unreal 3 engine
No Ships
Alts enhance your main enforcing alt leveling

Both:
Indie developers (Adventurine and Star Vault)
Open PvP

Ofc there's more to it,
but all MO really got going imo is that they didn't build their engine themselves. *Meh* :P

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.

MO doesn't have classes. It has NPC guilds that you can join if you wish to pursue a certain path with your character skills, but you are not forced to do that. You are right about the "no grind" part. They said you could max out your primary skills in a couple weeks.

MO will have ships, but not at launch.

Just a few corrections.

It is inevitable.  The only hope this game has of keeping clear of most of the DF people is if DF is delayed until Christmas.  That could give this game a fighting chance.  Other than that, you'll just have to go to the official forums to get info.

Considering one is advertising for Alpha while the other was ready to release years ago, DarkFall should have tons more information.

Considering Mortal Online is planning on launching in... oh 2-3 months.....

When a game comes along with a pre rendered video showing graphics almost better than Crysis, then claim they're going to have massive twitch based PvP battles with 12 hit boxes, claim it won't be instanced, and say they are releasing by Spring, AND (here's the kicker) they are selling hats and shirts.... I smell something odd.

It may come out, and the more... sort of sandboxy games the better, but its not  coming out any time soon, and it will NOT have what they promise. Seriously, that pre rendered movie is an insult.

I have to agree, games that over promise what is reasonable are suspect, and MO seems to be following down this road like DF before it.

Where can I find a release date for this game? I never saw the announcement apparently during my time of testing other games.

I think its hillariouse that Darkfall of all people make posts like theese :)

First of all theyve said SUMMER and nothing else so thats up to 6-7 months away. And nowhere have they said there wil be MASSIVE PvP battles.

Darkfall without:

1. The crazy fans

2. Crazy company making it

3. Graphics from the 90s

And with a combat system that actually seems to be fun...

Sounds pretty good to me :)

In their webb sites faq it says that they hope to release this summer but nothing is tuly decided.

As for rendered videos, we seen that in most if not all MMOs in development, there have been some talk that the first official DF video was pre rendered too.

It is impossible to say that something can't be done, very hard is the right phrasing. Guildwars 2 will be zoneless and look awesome, and I believe that. In MO case we will have to wait and see.

Can you post a link to where it says "Spring"? Here is their report for the first quarter 08 and if you scroll down you will find their release shedule saying June/July for release (aka summer in Sweden) http://www.starvault.se/SVQ1FINAL.pdf and this is their internal estimation not a release date :)

Tried to find anything about spring release but it says Summer everywhere I look...

SignusM doesn't know what's he's talking about . i've heard him make the "Spring release" claim more than once. it's totally false. he's a darkfall fan who has something against MO and makes things up in his mind (like a release date and delay that never occurred) in order to justify his hate. he also doesn't know what pre-rendering is, seeing as the teaser is rendered live and scripted.

What helps this game with graffics is the fact that Unlike the DF devs who tryed and faild to make a good working graffics engan the MO devs just bought and payed for the already working and proven Unreal3 engan.

Acutally, you have no idea what you are talking about and just want to say something inflamatory so as to look important. There is a link to a full development schedule in the first thread stickied in this forum. No where in it does it mention a "spring release". You theory is a heeping pile of manure, which is appropriate because of where it originated.

I got no propblem if you don't like the idea of MO or have something personally against SV, but at least talk in facts and not from the wilds of your overactive imagination. Seriously, it makes you look stupid.

Massive PvP Battles? Sorry, SV has never promised this. They have only said they are drawing on UO as an influence. Again, you're making stuff up, or suffering from Gaute and/or Tasos flashbacks.

12 Hitboxes? Actually, I believe it was 10.

Spring Release? We already covered this one. It's summer that is stated for anyone who wants to read the facts (you may not, nothing we can do about that).

Selling Shirts and Hats? Huh? Who gives a rats...hey, if that's all you got, hold on to it.

I got no problem admitting when something that I may not personally like is the truth. But 3 out of the 4 listed above were just right out uneducated lies, plain and simple. Someone needs to give SingusM a DF trial account so the lies will stop around here, lol!
