i guess you can, if you really don't like leveling fast. the only way to level in WOW is by quests as any group exp or mob grinding isn't worth the trouble. i wonder how long it would actually take someone to level to 70 (i know the new expac bumped the cap to 80) from just mob grinding. I would probably say double the amount of time it takes someone to do quests. so really in WoW you don't have a choice, you do the thousands of bullcrap quests or you take forever to level. Quest grind or die! |

I choose mix. I love wide open worlds but I also love a great and epic storyline quest. Though I get the feeling that some people want sandbox FFAPVP and I would never go that route. Only game I ever enjoyed any form of pvp was in DAoC. |

On a side note, I also enjoy epic quests AND freedom. Morrowind had one of the best stories in any game I've ever played, but you didn't even have to go through it. Sandbox does not mean no epic quests. |

In the end it won't matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away. |

Linear games have a lot more content and actually entertain. |

If the genre was worth a shit, we'd have a good selection for all 3 of those options... There's just too much of a bias towards the casual/mainstream/easy-mode crowd right now. Nothing wrong with that, really, but it shouldn't dominate the genre. |

I value freedom. I don't mind suggested direction (i.e., like a barkeep telling you what areas you ought to visit at your level.) But I do like to think my adventurer wanders where he may, rather than where he channeled. |

Im impressed with the voting results, which totally neglect the way WoW is designed. This can only mean that everybody here, excep 6%, really thinks that WoW sucks? |

What a laugh this thread... Please define "sandbox". For some EVE is a sandbox: a "space" game where your avatar can't even leave his cockpit chair. For some WOW is the opposite, while Wow players create helicopters and flying carpets to have a direct impact on how they adventure and progress their character. There are some really big sandbox elements in WOW and some really big linair things in EVE. Eliminate character classes? Wow: a druid or paladin in Wow can be a full tank, a dps or a full healer class. 3 completely different kind of characters rolled into one and up to the player to define his "class". Can you rebuild a freighter into a clombat vessel in EVE on the fly? So in fact, which of these games is the real "sandbox". -------------- If developpers can't even create simple MMORPG's like AoC or WAR without huge gaps in their development (AoC: graphics system limits killed the MMO) (War: design failure because the ratio of too few players vs content per server issue), than just dream on. Sandbox elements, right. Every good MMORPG has them already. The ultimate sandbox? How about RL, go play. |

Yes its right, but games like WoW are games where the only thing that you can do after acheve all objectives are to left the game. Such games are much more like singleplayer RPG with Multiplayer elements, till sandbox online RPGs are real MMOs where the feeling is more like real world than a game where you just achieve objectives... For me theme park games are much more time consuming because there are already objectives drawn ahead of you and affect my RL very bad, till in sandbox objectives are set by yourself and can set you limits much more easy and also together with that its more easy to satisfy myself from playing with much less playtime... Just question of personal taste. I personally enjoy theme park (linear) games and especially WoW much, but all the time there is something empty, something that cannot satisfy me, something that miss me, something that can name my home in the virtual world that I use generaly to escape from the reality. |

I have to vote for Sandbox. Been playing Lineage 2 for years now and I finally figured out today why other games dont intrest me and I keep comming back to Lineage 2. Because in Lineage 2 you are never forced to go in a certain direction. Its an open world where you can do anything you want to do at any time. I cant believe it took me 3 years to figure this out. Everybody claims to want freedom but the fact is that most of these people play the biggest handholding MMO ever created.
Personally I'd like to have DAOC back, pre TOA and all the instanced crapola but Darkness Rising and even the other PVE stuff was fine. Even the new classes are OK, but that forced PVE crap was lame and instanced pve killed the game world. |
