World of Warcraft(R): Wrath of the Lich King(TM) Shatters Day-1 Sales Record
With More Than 2.8 Million Copies Sold in Its First 24 Hours, Blizzard Entertainment(R)'s Second World of Warcraft Expansion is Now the Fastest-Selling PC Game Ever

IRVINE, Calif., Nov 20, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft(R)'s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King(TM), has sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability*, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. This eclipses the previous record of nearly 2.4 million copies sold in 24 hours, set in January 2007 by Blizzard's first World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade(R). Wrath of the Lich King was simultaneously released in North America, Europe, Chile, Argentina, and Russia on November 13; Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand on November 14; and South Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on November 18.
In celebration of the launch, more than 15,000 stores throughout the world had their doors open at midnight to welcome thousands of expectant players. Several of these locations were attended by Blizzard Entertainment representatives, who met players and signed copies of the game.

"We're grateful for the incredible support that players around the world have continued to show for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Wrath of the Lich King contains some of the best content we've created for the game so far, and we look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead."

"After a single day of availability, Wrath of the Lich King is already the bestselling PC game of 2008 at GameStop and ranks as one of our top-selling products so far this year," said Bob McKenzie, GameStop's senior vice president of merchandising. "In keeping with the tradition established by their previous releases, Blizzard Entertainment has again created a product that not only reflects their high standards of quality but is clearly an instant hit with gamers around the country."

Prior to the launch of Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft's subscriber population had grown to more than 11 million players, further strengthening its position as the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. More information about the new expansion can be found at the official Wrath of the Lich King website: www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath.

I mean really? i will never understand whats the attraction but WOW is king of all MMO. Nothing even comes close to sheer number and intereste it generates in people. Now since my sub for WAR will run out i feel sorry for Mythic and current state of EU servers (thanks to GOA). But i will never understand what's so special about WOW? can anyone explain it to me please?

Well, you will never understand apparently so I certainly wouldn't waste time explaining it :p

That said, have you played it? Best way to find out is to do so. If it didn't attract you but some other game did what's the difference between the two? That should be what's important to you.

Any new or returning player to WOW, send me a PM for some help getting started.

11/21/08 7:18:07 AM#5

Its fun.  It leaves you with a ton of options available to progress you character

1. 10 man raids
2. Battlegrounds
3. Crafting epic gear
4.  Reputations
5. Acheivements
6. Raids
7.  Arena
8  Daily quests
9. Heroics/badges
10. Lake wintergrasp (oRvR)

the fact that every day I can log in and do any of the things on that list and progress my character is awesome.   If I just want to relax, I do some daily quests, or work on a reputation or maybe an acheivement.   If I'm hyped up, I'll do a 10 man raid with my guild.   If I'm crazed, I'll go to Lake Wintergrasp and facemelt some alliance.

The thing is, every aspect of WOW's gameplay is fun and polished.  And every aspect allows you to progress smoothly.   You can 'grind' one aspect religiously if you want (there are people who do battlegrounds all day long).. or you can touch on many of the aspects all in the same day and advance in each of them more slowly.

But really, the reason 80% of north american servers are full and they had to release 22 new servers in the past 2 weeks is just because the game is well polished and very fun.

If you are an ex-wow player and want to come back. Scroll of Rez gives 7 free days, boost a character to 80 a realm and faction change. Send me PM for an invite. Only 1 per day available

It's hard to explain when you find the right game for you. It's a little bit like falling in love.

Ok Pheace thanks for your time than. You were  great help. And no i am not going to play WOW just to see the attraction. I just wanted to see from WOW fans prespective what makes them go nuts about this game. By your theory i ahve to play each and every MMO out there to get first hand experince but sometimes getting people opinion is lot better.

And you just wasted space for two posts you could have done soemthing better with your time. Thank you.

I suggest people try and play a MMO (With a free trial ...) to see what the attraction is when they ask about it? Yeah, doesn't make sense to you? Lol, well if you want to act bitter, go right ahead, I'm playing games while posting here, i'm not wasting time here ^^

Lol, really big things don't stop suddenly, it takes long time

Wows big succes is that it have something for almost everyone, many other devs are trying that but few get away with it.

Blizzard is one of the companies that know how to make bestselling games, and so far they are the only one with a MMO. Other big companies have some in work, like Bioware and Bethesda but all companies with MMOs right now is nowhere close to Blizzard even if you doesn't coun't wow.

It can't really be by chanse that almost all of Blizzards and Biowares games are bestsellers, they know what the general gamer wants. That doesn't make their game better than anyone else but they appeal to more people.

Its not that hard to figure out what makes WOW special actually, it has:

leveling, people love leveling.

gear, we all know how addicted folks are to getting new gear, in real life as well as in game.

competition - with  fair and balanced (ha) combat scenarios of even sides, and people love things to be fair.

easy - lets face it, Blizzard has removed most of the major timesinks (you know that stuff other gamers call content) and provided a game that is pleasant to play, especially to the more casual player.

variety, no doubt about it, there's ton's of pve content in the game, and more folks favor pve and solo play to combat oriented, cooperative gameplay. (see easy, above)

Well made - no denying this one, they put out a solid product that delivers (for the most part) what they promised with out cutting corners, something that the rest of the MMORPG game makers can't seem to do.

oh yeah, is fantasy based, with ...get this... humans, elves, orcs and trolls.  Most successful games have these races in them, so its obviously a key indicator of greatness.

Fun - yeah, despite what people who hate the game say, for most of those 11 million subs, the people who play it are having fun. (except for that very odd breed of MMO gamer who plays WOW because there's "nothing else out there" and they are totally bored with it. I never really understood those folks, if its  not fun, why play it?)

Its not much like EVE. While EVE is the most misunderstood game out there today, and beyond the comprehension of most players, its a proven fact that games like EVE do not do well in the marketplace, (doesn't have many of the features listed above you'll notice).  WOW is like EQ1, which was also a huge success in the early days of MMO's.

No, I think its pretty easy to see why WOW is so popular, in spite of not being a very deep game.

Although WoW is massively popular with a millions, like anything there will be people completely bemused by it and hate it. I personally would be unable to specifically put my finger on why I love it so much, I just do. In all seriousness, Blizz could ram any old crap down my throat and I'd play it. I am totally their bitch.

Like Azrile said, it ticks an awful lot of boxes. I still look back with fondness to the days when wow was more difficult to play, didn't have flightpoints ever 1/4 mile and actually took some effort. To the poster who commented that Blizz always sells top games, WoW was quite a different game when it first came out of the box, although it had all the ingredients, or the potential for the ingredients, to make it a great game. Then Blizz subsumed all the content that people designed for it, all the content they saw anyone else being succesful with, and packaged it all up in a game that people can put in some effort and get bright glowy things to wear outside the bank in Orgrimmar or Ironforge. That and getting what must be about $100 million a month in revenue can't hurt.

Often happens in business, when one person gets to the draw early enough before the others, they have the influence, income and weight to stay ahead no matter what the opposition pull out of the bag.

Maybe you don't value peoples opinion enough than i guess. trials are not good indicators for quality of game. i have tried that with AOC and Ryzom. I was completely mislead. I would rather listen to fair and true opinions than go play each and every MMO out there.

Why do you need opinions about WoW when you are clearly anti-WoW and nothing that anyone tells you will ever change your mind? Other than trolling, (btw, if you want to be an anti-wow troll, you will get better responses in a WoW forum) what's the point? I'd estimate that there are at least 3 million people who could give you a couple reasons each why they love WoW and keep buying the expansions. For someone who values "other peoples' opinions" so greatly, what more do you need?

We live in a technologically inclined, rat-race society these days. The Mother and father in most families are both having careers and have little time to spend with the kids, other than the occasional night out to eat (Most families no longer sit down to home cooked meals and chats about their day). So, they give their kids anything and everything they want. And today's society rewards for everything.

When I was a kid, I played soccer. I played 11 years, and out of that, I was on a winning team twice. I learned to accept defeat, but learned to savor victory three fold due to it. It made me a stronger person. Today, even the losing team in any contest gets a trophy. What is that teaching kids? How is it making them a stronger person emotionally? All it teaches them is to expect success in everything with no challenges. And makes them spoiled, whiney brats that won't know how to deal with challenges in the real world when faced with them.

Anyways, WoW follows the same concept of today's society. It abundantly rewards with little failure involved. Easy leveling, quests, navigation (On-Star like dots showing you where to go in most cases), UI, etc, etc. Why do you think when you play that if a group your in fails a quest/boss fight that so many in the group complain or say "You guyz r noobs!" and leave instantly? Or if you DO win and the loot drops, they roll, get their item, and leave the group. In many cases, leaving the rest of you to fight your way out short-handed, not caring to see if everyone has their port refreshed and ready and can get out safely. They are in it for themselves and the rewards mainly. But yeah, the sheer amount of rewards WoW gives out, combined with it's ridiculously easy gameplay is what keeps the subs high. They are all sheep. Baaaahhhh! Best I can put it.

I think challenge is better personally. Being defeated a few times makes you THINK of another way around your challenge, and makes that victory all the better once it is obtained. That, combined with the piss poor attitude of a majority of the WoW community is why I left.

P.S. I look in MANY of the games forums for interesting topics and conversations to be involved in. I am in school for Game Art & Design, and it is like studying for me. =)

Flame on anyways I'm sure.

People love leveling? For what, the whole month or two it takes to get to top level?

The gear comment I agree with. Everyone loves getting new duds to wear.

Um, fair and balanced. That's as funny as Fox (Faux) news saying its fair and balanced when it is obviously leaning to the right on issues. People in WoW love lopsidedness. If it appears to be a fair fight, in most cases, they run until they have more on their side. Even in the scenerios, you have zerg squads. And if they have purple gear, and you have blue gear, you lose.

I agree with the easy comment. But it was too easy to hold my attention. Almost non-existent challenge.

I agree that it has variety. But a lot of the zones and content are regurgitated on one another as well. A lot of same ole same ole quests. And as for a comment before it about grind elements not their? Not true. How many "Kill X amount of X" or "Collect X amount of X" quests are their in WoW? TONS! That is a grind. Rep and PvP rank? Grinds.  And I know personally I enjoy the PvE and solo content more than anything, so agree there. If WoW weren't so gear-based, and I had more time away from work or full-time school to be able to get the high end gear to compete in PvP, I'd enjoy it more. But face it, PvP is based on gear, not actual skill, or very little of it anyways in WoW.

Agreed. Yes, it's well-made.

Yes, fantasy with elves, orcs, dwarves, etc are nice, but it is beginning to wear thin. (A Forgotten's Realms based MMO might pull me in however lol. Based on their lore.)

Yeah, it's fun...to a point. But read (If you haven't already) my post before this.

WoW is NOTHING like EQ other than some of the UI elements they pulled from EQ. EQ was challenging and had tough penalties. Which both frustrated, and made it exciting at the same time to play. EQ made you THINK about your actions and the way you approached situations because it made you fear dying due to the penalties (Having to travel to get your corpse NAKED and drag it to a safe spot to loot your items off of it, XP loss and even possible de-leveling if you were low into a level). Not like WoW's "Oh darn, I died trying to be a 1337 dud3 and take on 4 mobs at once deep in a dangerous dungeon. Glad I respawn at a safe zone and only have to pay an insignificant repair bill." Booooooring.

WoW does not reward failure. It just doesn't punish you with losing exp bumping you back by 2 weeks becuase you lagged out and died. You call people sheep becuase they like to play the game on their own terms, and not rely on someone else? Sure, some people are noobs and can leave your gruop in the middle of the dungeon run becuase they already got their loot they wanted. But I can say the same about any other game. Except in WoW, you do not realy on your group THAT much.

Someone left your dungeon? No problem, get a replacement. No replacement? No problem, it usualy doesnt take 5 hours LFGing. Has it been 5 hours LFGing and no replacement? No problem, WoW does not force you to group, you arent locked out of 90% of the game content because your class is not very group oriented. You can go quest/solo grind while you wait. and maybe while osloing, you get an item that is even better then the one you wanted from the dungeon.

Your definition of "challenged" differs from mine. For me, the fact that WoW gives me so many options of "doing things" does NOT make the game "easy" nor does it make me a sheep. In fact, your definition of "challenged" makes you the sheep - you are much more restricted in things you can do. Therefore, you are the sheep, you follow the 2 or 3 ways the game can be played. If my game gives me 10 ways to follow the path, while yours only 2 or 3, then I am 4-5 times less of a sheep then you are.

And please, no more comments on the "bad community". If you dislike the chat, disable it or put the little kids on ignore list. If someone acts like a noob and it affects your gameplay, well, because WoW is so "easy" it shouldn't affect you at all now, should it?

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

Like it or love it - WOW simply is the best at so many diffrent things.  Thats why it draws the crowds while other games crumble.

WOTLK is nothing new really - But ppl dont really want something totally new.  They just want new content now and again to keep them active and make new goals to go for.

While games like AOC and WAR seems to be flopping big time atm -  And LOTRO still pushing ppl away with their Moral system and poor animation work  - It seems to be obvious that WOW will be dominating once again for the year 2009.  And personally I think thats a good thing.  Even tho I dont like everything that WOW is doing - it still does alot of things alot better than the rest of the MMO games are doing atm.

About the flypoints....

Thats what glues WOW together into one big world.  While most other games are now jumping from one map to another - WOW is able to make more of a continous world that gives so much to the actual gameplay.

If ppl wanted to have instant travels then flightpoints should not be in the game.  But without them .... I just can't imagine it.
