SOE has posted the patch notes for Chapter 11: The Battle of Echo Base for Star Wars galaxies, which adds a new heroic encounter on the Ice planet of Hoth.

Highlights:

* A new heroic encounter on the famous planet of Hoth, holo-beasts, minor profession changes, and improvements to the Character Transfer Service.

The Battle of Echo Base:

* The Battle of Echo Base is the newest heroic encounter in Star Wars Galaxies. Those sympathetic to the Rebel Alliance or Galactic Empire begin their journey to Hoth at the Adventurers' Guildhall in Aurilia.
* Only those who have chosen a side in the Galactic Civil War can take part in the battle, and all group members must be the same faction in order to enter the encounter together. A recruiter is available within the Guildhall.
* Each stage of the battle has its own objectives and goals, so keep an eye on both your comm window and the Quest Journal for important updates!

It's great :) so much to do, so much to see. Almost like a free expansion.

Does that mean the pace is pretty slow like Jump to light speed?

This very thing is worth thousands words:

The Aurilia guildhall has a new memorial to a fallen hero, named "The Freeman."

I thought Chapter 11 was bankruptcy.

The fallen hero whose combat system was basically repudiated when they reluctantly gave us target lock back.

There's no way I'd even try to play this game without target lock, particularly with the mobs still on crystal meth.

"Fast and iconic" my Bothans'  behinds.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Gimme some facts, fanboi.

Don't just make a very pathetic assertion and expect not to be challenged on it.

Jeff Freeman's role in the NGE was in the new combat system.  The entire "let's have a pseudo FPS" thing that caused tens of thousands of accounts to be cancelled, and was released in pre-alpha state to paying customers,  which they told us would actually be pretty cool once they got collision detection into the game in six months or so....

I don't blame him for eliminating professions, or for making Jedi available to every 11 year old with Mom's VISA, or the destruction of the player driven economy, or the entire "too much reading" schtick.

I might add that I didn't speak ill of the dead.  There was no personal attack on Jeff Freeman in my original post at all, and there won't be any.  But the NGE combat system was and is a failure.  That's why they returned target lock.

Too bad they haven't taken everyone off crystal meth, which destroyed some of the aesthetic appeal of the game itself.

He had his (minor) role but he can't be held accountable for it.  http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/op-ed/801-SWG-NGE-Crying-Freeman

Also, he's responsible for the creation of Creature Handler as it once was.  Something I know you were quite fond of ;)

He was a talented man.  No doubt about that.  Unlike most of the SWG dev team, he was not afraid to actually talk to the people who made it possible for him to make a living doing something he obviously loved to do and was good at doing.

BTW, that article clearly and plainly sets on Freeman's head the "fast action combat" that was effectively repudiated by restoration of the target lock.  The "free targeting" system was Freeman's baby.  It's still in the game, but I know of no veteran who prefers it over target lock, particularly with the entire game still in the "Benny Hill" mode.

Out of curiosity when was the last time you played?

I haven't played in almost 6 months. I may log back in to try Hoth, but my last memory of the game was not fast paced combat.

My memory of the game is seeing players layered with years of accumulated gear. A fight between any two professions could last 10 seconds or 10min depending on how prepared both combatants were.

I don't know of a game that has more or even less depth than SWG. AOC might have held onto that, but they nerfed the melee combat system to mimic other mmo's.

This crystal meth thing yu keep saying is interesting. The shadowing on faces did not create the desired effect of more riggid features. But I contend that SWG with the settings on high is comparable to all but a couple of games on the market even still.

I'm over this game, I lived through the NGE after being let down by most other major titles since its release. I'm trying my hardest to enjoy WAR, but I feel like there is nothing to look forawrd to. To be completely honest though, I had an great time in SWG through all 3 incarnations of the game. The NGE just took up until about a year ago to come around.

There's a vet trial on right now.

I last played it last night.

Same old issue: the NGE itself.  It dramatically dumbed down the game, even more than the CU did with the introduction of overt, in your face levels, which was more than bad enough.  Turning a world into just a game.  A crime.
