Not very strange at all. Our Navy was created, and so were our marines, to fight against a very similar crowd, Jefferson wrote about them before he waged war against them, civiliation's most persistent enemy -- the Jihad:

"It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy's ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once."

Same stuff, different century.

A Good Sandbox isn't about your characters abilities; It's about the players ability.

well.. in this day and age, it's kind of funny to hear about pirates in the news. no captain jack or hooked hands... arghhhhhsss either...

especially when there are cargo ships carrying hella hella expensive cargo. +200 miles out to sea. $100 million worth of fuel

Supposedly the indian navy ship blew up a "mother ship" - a boat out in the middle of nowhere used as refueling and rearming station in th emiddle of the ocean. they used speedboats too... but i wonder what kind of ships was their mother ship.

It's a pretty riveting story, no doubt.  They captured a tanker with 2 million barrels of oil on it.  The big fear is that, if they don't get the requested ransom for it, they will dump it in the ocean creating an environmental nightmare.

And here's a story that the Indian navy just sank a pirate "mothership".  Good for them.

Pirateing in that part of the world has been going on for Ever. The ships I board as part of my job have maps showing pirate hot spots on them. The diffrance is that Now they are hitting Larger ships ad this is getting press.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

My friends and I have been talking about this a lot lately. I mean, do you destroy the tanker and pollute the hell out of the ocean when it sinks? Or pay them off? We finally came to the conclusion that the best thing to do would be to pay them their ransom, and as they leave the tanker after receiving their money, shoot them.

Some starving guys jump onboard a ship and loot the fridge.  Film at eleven.

Serious modern pirates work the international finance game.

And they arn't looking for a free meal.  They're taking it all.

Pirates are rampant in Indian Ocean and parts of Asia such as the Philippines where many islands can hide them. When I was in the Philippines I happened to see two pirate ships, high speed boats actually, buzzing away from a frigate. Pirating never dissapeared. It just changed

Either that or fuel for those T-72's they stole off that Russian cargo ship for the next few years?

Whats a T-72? Tank, heavy arms? Small arms?

And how did they manage to offload that?  Do these starving samalians happen to own a port, a navy to defend the ship, and an army to secure the port?  If weapons go missing, its generally because someone wants to "launder" them to a militant force for reasons that would otherwise create a PR disaster.

Yeah, it seems these pirates are burning hot on

hijacking ships and tankers, no wonder why they have

launchers. if im to punish them, ill bring their mothership

to bermuda triangle and let them vanish for all of eternity.

It does seem as if a movie script verses real life happening. However i guess since bank robbers still happen even in our insta techno age why not pirates? It does seem as if they are picking their targets carefuly,. I guess the small good part that it is not crusie liners yet....

I am kind of curious when some former special forces/navy seals are going to get together and form a company to retake hijcked supertankers and cargo ships back from pirates.

It seems it would pay better, for less working hours, than running around Afghanistan or Iraq as contract fighters.

Just as an aside, I'm surprised Haliburton or Blackwater doesn't solicit a contract to retake the supertanker. I would assume that the contract cost would be less than the ransom.

Ok, my comment was meant tounge-in-cheek. Yes, the pirates are using the captured ships of tanks, oil, etc for ransom money. they could possibly take the tanks off the ship in one of their ports (they control several) but its much better business to just get a lump sum of money and release the ship and its crew than to worry about the logistics of moving cargo off.

Oh and this is a T-72:

"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"

Avast ye landrubbers! I've noticed that a person with a eye patch, a parrot on his right shoulder, a hook instead of a right hand and a tree leg is indeed the news. Everything comes back in fashion further or later; not it's piracy - both in reality and on the internet.

I think Barack Obama should consider legalizing piracy.  This article shows how Somali piracy has been one of the few economic bright spots off the Horn of Africa.  He said during the campaign that he wants to spread the wealth around and the pirates have done that.  The article says:

"Massive ransoms have brought rapid development to former fishing villages that now thrive with business and boast new beachside hotels, patronized by cash-rich buccaneers who have become local celebrities virtually overnight.  Investors have been attracted from around Somalia."

What better way to kick start the economy than introducing a little looting into the mix?  Not only that, but it would bring some excitement into our boring lives.  Avast ye mateys!
