Hi All

I really enjoy D&D Online but I use to play the original pen and paper game in the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk.I have 2 questions

  1. Why don't they release an MMO set in either of those worlds ?
  2. I play NWN1 and NWN2 and have read people create there own modules using tool builder  for network games ..any recommendations on how and where I could partake in this experience

Thanks

D&D Online is as far away from a true D&D version game than you can get..

Turbine used to be a great company but after AC1 it just went downhill.

1. Stormreach is set in world of Ebberon, that is new setting for pen and paper. How you say, forgotten realms or to be more precise land of Faerun is no longer in development in offices of wizards of the coast so everything is set in Ebberon, books, novels and yes games.

2. You can check official nwn site for info on public games.

I dissagree, stormreach is closest pen and paper MMORPG on the market. And if lack of PVP is why all the people do not like it, then they misunderstood core meaning of D&D. If instncing is bothering you, then you misunderstood core meaning of D&D, if must group is bothering you, then you have misunderstood core meaning of D&D.

I'd like to see a real D&D mmo using rolling dice and all.

1. That sounded strange, so I checked the wizards.com site and it seems like they still are doing forgotten realms stuff. As the new edition of D&D arrived this year the Faerun world setting took a leap 100 years into the future and a lot of (strange and stupid?) stuff happened to the world to justify the new rules.

I think that D&D online was/is very close to the 3.0 ruleset, not exactly the same,  but close. I've never played Eberron campaigns but when I looked through the book it certainly feels like the same game that turbine made.

Interesting but I'm not sure I completely agree with Point 1

NWN is set in Forgotten Realms ?And they have just released an expansion set ?

If you think about it though, pretty much all MMOs use an invisible dice roll. Random damage from whatever to whatever with a chance to hit etc etc.

It's a wild guess, but I'd say that Wizards of the Coast doesn't want to pay royalties to the creators of the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk (which are both holdovers from when the company was owned by TSR, if I'm not mistaken- please correct me if I'm wrong).

The reason they may have continued developing FR is that it is so successful and thus, profitable.

Ebberon, if you remember, was created by an individual who won a contest.  I wonder how much of a stake he still has in the profits.

I happen to not care about the reasons, I just wish they would do it.  Imagining a FR MMO is something I do often.  They could get Bob Salvatore to write quests for it!

Here's hoping that someday will come...

Have you even tried DDO? There is dice rolling...

As for creating a new DnD mmo with forgotten realm setting... why? its the same standard fantasy setting you see everywhere else. Forgotten realms doesnt have a hint of originality to it. Atleast thats how I see it.

They should release an expansion for DDO with like Dragonlance or something like that..

But as someone mentioned before, DDO really does have the core values of DnD. Except now they are making it a more solo friendly game with hirelings and stuff... Which i truly oppose.

D&D online does not feel like a real D&D game. It feels like a generic dungeon crawl game with D&D name stamped onto it.

A real D&D game would have similar style art to all of the books. Not a replica of the Asheron's Call 2 player models.  It just doesn't feel like D&D.

If they changed the art style to the that of the books... I would never log off

Therefore I am glad they are the way they are

If you think DDO is far from the main D&D idea, then you have no idea what the first RPG pen and paper were all about.

They were all about getting a group of adventures, then a short travel, and then a long dungeon. Even the first cRPG's were all dungeon crawl (Dungeon master, Eye of beholder, Ishar, Lands of Lore, Wizardry...)

Dungeon crawling was the main vision of RPG.

DDo is a dungeon crawl. Like it, or not. But saying it's distant from the main vision is just wrong.

DDo is actually very close to the art in the books of Eberron. Wizards of the coast holders of the D&D license do not want to pay TSR for using Forgotten Realms. Eberron is the only world made by WotC so they basically forced Turbine to do it in Eberron. Buy the books, and see the art in game is extremly well done.

DDO is just a co-op game, like Diablo. But I actually liked the original Diablo better, and it had no monthly fee.

The closest thing would have been the Dungeons and Dragons online tool set, or whatever they were calling it.

It was supposed to release with 4th edition, but for some reason they've dropped it. Rather than an MMO it was a virtual table top. You saw your character, like a model on a table top, and the Dungeon Master could place Monsters on the table top, and move them around.

The tool set did all the dice rolls and damage calculations, and it came with built in voice chat, and a lobby so you  could hook up wiht other players and DMs, and go on an adventure.

Sounded cool, I don't know why they've dropped it.

Other than that, I haven't heard of any Dungeons and Dragons MMO in the works at all. It would be cool, to see the actual D&D rules implemented as close as possible, a solid grouping game not some solo fest like WoW, and the actual Monsters from the Monster Manual, but it doesn't look like anyone is working on it.

It's the lore and the places to explore that makes a difference here .Look at Forgotten Realms ...Zhentil Keep,Red Wizards of Thay ,Jungles of Chult ,Southern Kingdom like Calimsham and Arm etc etc

Thats why the Forgotten Realms is a good setting .However I didn't realize the new world is going to be properly developed so that's a reassuring point for someone like me who enjoys history to a game :)
