I am a musician, and one of the things that I really enjoy is the music when I first start up any given game. A MMOs music would never drive me away from an MMO, but to me theres a good felling when you start up a new game and the theme music just makes you want to delve into the world it may offer.
So I ask you, what MMO has the best theme music to you?
After much thought I had to go with EQ2, the game I currently play. Not sure why, I just, like it the most! ------------------ |

Quality wise, Aion imho, london symphony orchestra and Yang Bang Ean as composer, probably the biggest economic effort for any MMORPG in the music department. The results are amazing. |

I'd have to say either the SWG character select music or Guild wars music. |

I like the WoW music a lot. Not necessarily the theme, but the music in all the different areas is really excellent.
Also, the music for the opening screen on Guild Wars is really superb. It reminds me so much of Sibelius' violin concerto (is it that maybe? I haven't played the game in so long). |

It has a bit too much of that new agey feel though not really minimalist. The best music I have come across has been Lineag 2, Guild Wars. the music in EQ 2 is done very well but I'm not really a fan. Some of the music in Lord of the Rings is good but not enough. There is a very sublime piece in the elf beginner area that sounds like a shawm is playing it, which is extremely good if you take it for a sort of folkey tune. However, I actually turn off the LOTRO music and play with the movie soundtracks (and as a point of note, I'm about to watch "The Return of the King" right now). To be honest, I have tried many mmo's (just to try) and there aren't that many that I can say had great music (to my taste). For instance, the music in Aion is done very well, I just hate it.

Good topic. For me it's easily FFXI. Not the crystal theme that plays in the player, or the character select, but the music behind the intro cinematic. Even after all these years it's still one of my favorites. Next would probably be EVE's themes. The opening music changes with the expansions, but it's always fantastic, along with the rest of the OST. I also still like the intro music for TBC alot. Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV |

It's a valid point of view, and probably strenghtened by the fact tat you're musician, anyways, i would recommend it even if it wasn't up to my tastes, cause as you said, it's done very well. BTW, have you listened all of the tracks? I don't like them all, but some like Daeva's oratorio sound quite epic, and ingame, the mixure of music depending on the situation (cryengine basic feature) makes it quite inmersive. |

one of the songs for aion (short english version). static.plaync.co.kr/aion-obt/aioninfo/sound/a01_b03_c03/music1_8.mp3 Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries... |

I have to say I did like the Aion Theme, tho it may just be more my style.
And I had completely forgotten L2, I love the song you get when logging out, named "After the Storm" on their site if I remember correctly.

I'm personally fond of much of the music in Sword of the New World. It has alot of quiet, classical-style pieces that fit wonderfully with it's setting. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |

Guild Wars Music is just incredible. While Lineage 2 had SOME good music, most of it was very bland, not adding anything to the games atmosphere.
And of course, Star Wars Galaxies had some of the greatest music ever, since, it had Star Wars music. |

Age of Conan has the best for me. Up there with SWG as well. Many fond memories of pvp battles with epic SW music. |
