The EverQuest II official site has been updated with a look at at the game's new map system that will be implemented with game update 50.

With GU 50, we'll see The Shadow Odyssey go live. But that isn't all there will be on November 18th. One of the new features that everyone will get is the new map system!

The map system has been completely reworked and there's a new main screen with a fresh new look. All of the overland maps have been redone as well! The various city scenes are more detailed than ever before.

There's also a new POI (point of interest) directory. It works with outside POI's as well, and this will be beneficial to folks who use add on's such as EQ2Maps. You'll be able to drop custom POI's into your map directory and have them appear. Your POI will also blink on the main map, and set a waypoint while in the same zone.

it's only a nice improvement if the current after market map programs will work with it. I sure hope they give them advanced notice so they can have updates ready to go for teh expansion. What they are advertising here isn't nearly as good as what we already have if you incluse the EQ2maps program.

If you head on over to eq2interface.com I am sure you will notice all the UI coders hard at work making their UI's compatible.  Also, I think this was even stated in the original post, eq2maps WILL be compatibile with the new SOE system.

Did you really just say that the DEVS should not make an improvement to the default UI because it may break an aftermarket mod?

This expansion brings a huge change to the in game map system. Thanks to gm9 and jnils for their extremely hard work (and a little help from Landiin), EQ2MAP will continue to work with the new map system. There is still some loose ends to tie up but they hope to have it mostly done by launch day Nov 18th.

Damn. I liked the old maps. Especially since EQmaps works so well with it. The old style was better. I was hoping that was a glitch during Shadow Oddyssey beta.

I havent used the game map in years, im hooked on the eq2 map autoupdater, its great if you havent tried it, give it a whirl.

i am so resubbing to eq2, the best pve mmorpg i have played, and i hate fantasy mmorpgs

I am still subbed to EQ2.

I play WAR for the PVP at the moment, but EQ2 is still the best MMO out there when it comes to PVE.
