No one has talked about this game in a while. With the lack of anything new added to the game and the Free play probably ending soon I don't see Ryzom lasting much longer to be honest. Majority of the main land is empty I really think maybe 3-4k people play this game. During Prime time a couple days ago I went to every major city and counted 9 players, such a shame. Everyone wants a sandbox but when one is staring right at their face they look the other way. Too bad, I actually enjoyed the game.
Edit: I keep Ryzom in my games played List cause I have hope for the game, lets hope the devs fix the glaring problems with this game. PLaying: EvE, Ryzom Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum |

Spoiler alert; it isn't free forever. It's just a long trial period, when they have enough players addicted, they'll start asking money for it. You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up. |

What I find crazy is being glued to the terrain, but to each his own. |

Ryzom is a great game with alot of Sandbox elements. It's far superior to many new MMOrpg. You can even design your own quests and such for other players.. it's cool and fun. If the lack of jumping turns you off... I seriously don't know what to say lol. Go back to WOW ?

Jumping is important, IMO, not for bunny hopping combat, but because if it doesn't exit it causes a feeling of claustrophobia and restriction leading to frustration. It's similar to isometric 2d games. When I play an isometric 2d game, I'm constantly trying to scroll up to see the sky and the horizon, but I never can. I feel claustrophobic. Without jumping, the smallest obstacle has to be walked around, instead of jumped over. It's very frustrating after playing a full 3d game where you can jump over small obstacles. I can see where I want to go, but I can't get there in what would be a normal manner, to simply jump over the log. No, I have to walk around. It's a pain in hte arse. That being said, from all I'ver heard Ryzom has some good sandbox elements in the game, and I do wish there were more games with these sorts of elements. |

Well a sandbox also needs content IF you don't make core features like changing the world your core. Really there's just crafting crafting, combat, faction quests(which are craft X, gather X and kill X), and a small handful of lore quests(of which all of them aren't in game, and some that actually 'hurt' your character peramently). Most of which just affects your character... kill a mob and it'll spawn back before 5 mins is up, kill a boss it'll be back the next day. Take control of territory/outpost and it looks the same but gives loot to your guild instead.
Sure in WumOnline there's just crafting, and combat... but everything you do directly affects the world in some way or form. Kill a mob it's corpse will be around for a day or two, it'll attract nearby predators/scavengers during that time. Control an area you can build your houses, have storage, can make farms, and change the land to your liking.
Basically it's a lot more sandbox than Everquest/WoW but only because it's missing some of the linearity and lets people plot their own course. But not to the extent of games that are paraded as a sandbox, basically below EvE on the 'numberline'. And it needs more mechanics for me to want to play it. |

You can tell that you like and want to jump in a game, you cannot tell that Ryzom is not a full 3D environment because it's not true. Ryzom is full 3D and the lack of jump is intentional. If people start to play a game trying to inderstand what are the rules and the reasons of a game instead of searching things of other games in a game, maybe that people could write more balanced opinions. One of the major quests of Ryzom is the ability to travel safety around the world, a world that have trap paths and constraints so you need your own personal skill to do that well (and that is a hard job). Jump would spoil this a lot. You can dislike it, of course, but what about having the jump and still having obstacles to avoid you escaping from a trap? You would enjoy more the game because you could jump in towns? What you are asking is exactly the bunny jumps, because for the mechanics of the game they would be totally useless, apart of having some people happy to press one more button for nothing. That's my opinion of course.

The lack of jump, while sometimes annoying mainly because I'm so used to being able to do it, certainly isn't a deal breaker for me. I played Ryzom all through beta and for about a month in release, hoping for the best. It's a game with a lot of really clever bits to it but it ultimately bored me to tears. I had hoped during the time I played that they would tidy it up and make the clever bits more interesting to use. Unfortunately, they didn't. I returned to check after the whole Ryzom Ring thingy, another very clever idea, but it was still as tedious to me as ever. Good luck to them, but I don't think I'll be giving it another go. |
