I think it will sell very well, but you do have a valid point. Sci-Fi MMO's are still new ground, even though EVE Online has been on the case for a few years now. All other Sci-Fi MMO's have been complete failures, though - SWG and Tabula Rasa are the only two that come to mind.... well... and RF Online... which isn't even on the map anymore - I could be mistaking though, there may be others I haven't thought about that are currently out. But, Star Wars Sci-Fi is slightly different than your other fare. I mean, most Sci-Fi media has to explain the existence of everything, where fantasy can borrow heavily from the LotR lore, without much consequence. This is a major disadvantage for Science Fiction. But, like I said, Star Wars is a bit different, in that it's been around for a long time, and people already know what everything is. Star Trek is also in this boat, and... Stargate to some extent, I guess (although not as much.) |

Of all the things to screw up, EA is making the same mistake as SOE (targeting WoW and want to be the "WoW killer"...)
I will not say whether this game will succeed or fail, but if their vision is to the next "WoW killer", I do fear for the future of this game...
Current MMO: Eden Eternal, Divina (TW Ver.), World of Tanks. Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P) |

i really think this game will sell out WoW, i mean this is Star Wars and WoW is just getting to become old news even with the new expansion its the same game.

I like the confidence but how can any company make such a claim? Sure, the Star Wars brand has a huge following and Bioware has a great record of developing single player games no denying it. It is the wrong approach to try to be a "WOW" killer. I would prefer an MMO be developed to be the best it can in it's specific realm. WOW and Star Wars are not of the same ilk in terms of setting space vs mediviel. To imply that this game is going to be a WOW killer means their model is to attract and sustain subscribers is to cater to the carebears and be less focued on grouping. I don't believe Bioware even has a track record for an MMO. I know Blizzard didn't either and they succeeded to a high degree. This is encouraging for Bioware but I fear that this game will be hyped into dissappointment just like ever other MMO released post WOW. This is my opinion of course to which I am entitled. |

I believe not, my friend. Have a nice day! |

Fanboism. The core of stupidism.
One sentence my dear friend.

Fanboism? Who said anything about being a fan? I am not necessarily a fan of either. Please read my post again. I was just implying that it is pre-mature to think, before SWTOR is even released, that it wont even come close to touching WoW. That was all I was stating. I could care less if it does or does not. Do I believe one day, WoW will fall to another game out there to come? Most certainly I do. To which MMO it will be, no one knows. |

So when this game goes live and don't deliver the 10 millions players LA will force bioware to change the game, again, you know, like with SWG. Ha ha ha maybe this time they force bioware into transforming it to a sandbox, this way the circle will be completed.
Damn, what greedy people, they just see money money money. -=AlaKraM=- |

Didn't AoC have a bigger launch sales number? I know the WOW expansions are what really broke records. Just sayin. But if it's a GOOD game and they don't go nerf happy they can do it. If they have a thight QA where you don't put something in game and have to patch it out. That's the biggest problem of mmo's going under.. Earth & Beyond.. AOC.. etc..

Interesting, indeed. After reading the linked comments, I know for certain that the game is not being made for my demographic and I can therefore ignore it.

At least something good for a laugh. The OP's post nailed it too. And the EA folks statements are classic
"LucasArts online boss Tom Nichols concurred, saying that the firm is banking on The Old Republic’s storytelling component to bust through WoW’s 11 million subs record."
"“Our goal is to show that by bringing storytelling to the genre that we can attract an even wider audience."
Have there ever been a more incorrect design/statement in a mmorpg yet ?

It'd be difficult for him to have posted it 'back then' because of the fanboy apocalypse.
I think swtor will be an important case study for what not to say and what not to do when what you'll deliver is just so-so.

Originally posted by Enigmatus I think it's an excellent thing to show just how deluded , incompetent , and all around "wrong" EA/Bioware was and is with SWTOR. They believed story-telling would put them past 11 millions SUBS for a mmorpg. I'd prefer that every developer of mmo's in the future go as far away as possible from the SWTOR route , and nothing wrong with showing a before and after of the situation. Was nothing but facts shown here , EA saying they would beat WoW in subs because of the story telling , less than a year after it's F2P. |
