I am a big fan of Joss Wheden's work.

I though Buffy (At least the early seasons) were great, and I think firefly is one of the best Sci-Fi's out there.

But I have to agree with the majority, the "Buffyverse" although has been refined over a decade, is not a really good franchise to base an MMO off of.

Buffy has been in just about every medium, from comics to movies, each one (err...except for the movie.) has really gave something to it, but it doesn't strike me as a good MMO.

Firefly, on the other hand, I thought would always be a good MMO.

It has the nice look, a lush number of worlds, and it lends itsself to some kick ass gameplay. (Having both a skilled 3rd person rpg AND space game would be awesome. Being able to travel to different worlds and such,)

But no matter how I look at any of these, it looks like its going to be made, and unfortunatly, FOX has their fingers in it, so both MMOs will probably be complete shit anyway.

A buffy MMO? Really? You're kidding me..? I just don't see that happening.. well not successfully.. (i'm not insulting you or anything.. just personal opinion)

Though I would like to see a Firefly MMO in the near future. So long as they don't glue the game to the story in the series/movie and delve more into the Expanded Universe of the theme... it could be HUGE.

I dont really think it would exactly be Buffy as much as the concept of Vampire slayer.

Killing vampires would be fun for like 20 minutes lol...

Unless they added pvp like... You can be a vampire or a human, KILL EACHOTHER

But you see, by the...oh...3rd season, the term "Vampire slayer" was pretty much abandoned.

Now, most "vampire slayers" are known as just "Slayers", because Buffy killed more demons and other creatures than actual Vampires...Actually Vampires really became the weaklings of the Buffyverse after a while.

Except for Angel, which made for one of the best Spin offs ever. I liked it a lot better than Buffy, really.

The thing that makes Buffy a bad MMO is what makes Firefly a good MMO (as a gameworld).

Buffy is special.  She is the chosen one.  She alone can stand against the forces of darkness. 

Yes, it's camp and over the top and goofy and also very interesting and a hell of a lot deeper than it comes off.  Its depth is all given to it by the actors. 

Also having the first gender defined class in an MMO that I can think of offhand (besides those races that had essentially no Gender, or only one) is a land mine of epic proportions.  Not.  Good. 

Firefly is the exact opposite.  Who is Malcolm Reynolds?  A Sergeant.  In a war that was lost.  Wars have a lot of Sergeants.  Jayne?  A two-bit criminal who held people up for a living?  Inara?  A consort (uncommon, but hardly unique).  Kaylee?  A girl with a gift for engines. 

Only River and Simon fell into the 'Buffy' model, and they were hardly main characters in many of the shows.  And even Simon isn't that special (smart inner worlds boy who ran away from there).  One character.  Who barely shows up in many of the episodes.

What made the world special was what they did - not who they were.  PERFECT for an MMO.  Your actions define your character - not your 'birth.'   You aren't special, you aren't the chosen one.

Bingo, you said what many of us were thinking.  Of course, they will waste millions making this game and end up wondering what they did wrong at the end.

That's specious reasoning. You make the assumption that it was the setting that made it fail and not the change from one setting to another.

What proof do you offer that if the star wars game originally released as it was after nge that it would have failed?

I think disenfranchising its playerbase had something to do with that.

Again, I think I'll wait to see if Firefly mmo is a success as I'm still convinced that there is not enough there other than a great show based upon interesting characters and great dialogue.

With a Firefly they could do literally anything they wanted to because that was a largely unexplored universe; the main rule was that everything was different everywhere.  The show centered around the one ship and they didn't really get into much more until the movie but even that didn't nail too much down.  You could write a Star Wars game, remove Jedi and change the place names and call it a Firefly game and it would work (not that I recommend that).  You wouldn't capture the heart of the show but you can't really do that in any MMO based on any movie/show anyways.  Just make some parts familiar and don't let it suck and we'll be g2g.

With the Buffy/Angel universe they could also do a lot: modern times but -with- monsters and magic.  It's a comic book without the costumes.  It can easily be dark and more "serious", like Underworld or Blade or wildly epic like Hellboy.  There's alternate dimensions to visit, empires to raid, dungeons, gods, demons, artifacts, magic, modern military, dragons and other huge monsters that they didn't usually show because of budgets...  'Evil' and 'good' could probably be played.  And look at WoW - that's as insanely, unabashedly campy/silly as you can get and that one's doing ok.  Some of you need to work on your imaginations.

Well of course that is very true and I think that is what Tvalentine is trying to get at. However, what you will get is more a game based upon that universe but will have very little to do with why people watched the show.

I don't see the Firefly Universe as it stands very compelling. Once they flesh it out it will be more of "something else" and I wonder how many people will log in only to think "well, it's a sci fi mmo but doesn't really feel like firefly".

You know what the funny thing is about this Multiverse -- it's total CRAP.

It's literally one of the WORSTE business models I've ever seen. And their software / tools are medicore doo-doo at best. Compare them to something like Hero Engine and Big World and they are a complete joke.

The only reason you see this junk getting any kind of deals to build any MMORPG's on known franchises is because the people who founded it have connections and know people. For example James Cameron is on this junks Advisory board.

Does anyone really think that if this thing was founded by a start up company run by a bunch of no-name joes that they would be getting deals to develop software with it for FOX based on their shows?  Fuck no. Never.

Multiverse = junk peddled to ignorant CEO's by people with a name and connections.

I feel sorry for the bunch of idiot Angel Investors who dropped 4 million into this pile. They could of taken that 4 mill and built a decent MMORPG from scratch.  DAOC only cost 2.5 mill to build. Look where Mythic is now.

Or they could of built a total bad ass MMORPG development solution and had plenty of money to spare.

I've heard about the Buffy MMO, but what the heck is Firefly. I've never even heard about it before. As for Buffy, I think it will suck just like the show did.
