I don't know about other classes, but keep defense as an Engineer is the funnest time I've had since DAOC's Battlegrounds. I've recently created an engineer character in a High/High population server, got him up to 15 and decided to go defend my first keep on Saturday. There was already what looked like 35+ enemy players beating on the dwarf keep door, which forced me to find out that there is a backdoor to the keep. Anyway, only about 6 defenders (including myself) were in the keep, so we all head up to the lord room and got onto the ledges. Another engineer and I set up our grenade turrets on ledge pointing towards the enterance stairs of the lord room. Only took about 10 minutes until the destruction broke the door down and began charging into the area only to meet constant bombardment from the grenade turrets, then we lobbed a few acid bombs at the group and watched their health plummeted downward as the healers scramble to get everyone healed. We then began to pick off the weakened enemy whos health was getting low from the acid. They were then wiped and didn't seem to have a chance to down the lord. Now Sunday, I headed to the Troll Country keep because I had a clue that it was going to be attacked very soon from the indication of an outpost near it being captured. I get to the keep just in time to see Destruction setting up a ram, so I hurried inside quickly to only find out I was the only one inside the keep. As the 35 Destruction beat on the door, I had to call for help or join a group quickly. So, I go type in the channel and my luck, there doesn't seem to be a general or zone chat for the location I was at. I'm stuck without any call for help, so I had to atleast give it a chance and die defending. I set up the grenade turret at the same ledge and set it on aggressive, I head up to the top floor and hid. I peaked through the stairs going from the top floor to the lord room to see when I was going to make my move. The Destruction group quickly charges up the stairs and begins attacking the lord and his champions, I spot their healer and caster group and began lobbing non-stop acid bombs, fire and flash grenades at the group. Then I begin sniping off the healers, casters, and tanks in that order; until the last few retreated down the ramp to de-agro the lord room. I made about 800 renown from their first run. |

@OP thanks for sharing, not playing Warhammer myself, but that's the sort of stories that make mmorpgs really cool and memorable! |

I've been lucky enough in the past two weeks to have a few evenings spent in situations similar to what OP described... and yet completely different.. if you know what I mean. When (and if) they stop those dumb scenario mini-games from eating up world RvR the experiences like the one described above will become the norm. |

Nice story :) Engineer is a very intresting class to have in a MMO, lots of options... Anyways it sounded really fun, but those keeps sure could use a horn to blow in or a fire to light to signal to other players that the keep is under attack. |

I stopped reading after something about 35+ enemies, only 6+ defenders and the enemies whiping. ROFL. Yeah, I believe you. Did you count heads or did they do that for you? |

Yeah I always have fun taking or defending keeps. I wish they would get rid of scenarios as well. I still do them cuz right now Im trying to catch up with my guild. I had a Shadow Warrior but we have no witch hunters so I decided to make one. I love witch hunters they are sweet. |

People complaining about scenarios need to get in a guild focused on RvR 1st and scenarios/PQs second. These battles happen all the time but in order to start one you have to be proactive and not passive like 80% of most random players.
Find a RvR focused guild with a solid number of members and have fun or stay and sit on the sidelines, you choice. |

well.. wether you believe him or not.. I seen it myself happen more than once. where 6-10 defenders faught off 2 warbands levels aside. the defenders have advantages. 1- a door you can go in an out of instantly. come out.. wack a few people go back in and heal up.. no delay. as long as they can click on the door... 2- the keeps defenses (weaponry) is very strong. 3- the high ground 4- The lords room. 8 defenders get 2 champions and 1 hero class on thier side.. and hero hits as hard as 5 players at once. if the defensers target the right healers and use the knock backs as they were talking about to launch them off the wall . they can EASILY hold that room.
Again.. I seen this happen about 2 times already in White Tower server.. its possible.. just because you .. yourself aren't lucky enough to defend in that situation doesn't mean its impossible

I can vouch for him. In each keep theres a few mobs at the ground floor of the keep after you break the door down. Then as you head up to the first floor, as soon as you hit the end of the spiral stair case you get agroed by 4-6 champions, and the keep lord who is a hero level. That alone is enough to wipe an uncordinated 10 - 15 man group. However if you have 6 people smashing at enemy healers and they drop its a wipe, since they wont make it back in time to the keep. So to clarify its not 6 Order vs 35 destruction, its 6 order + 10 friendly NPC's vs 3-5 healers + rest of raid |

The other day we were 14 defenders against 60+ attackers and I have never seen so many die so fast except for the old PBAE bombs in DaoC before Walls stopped stopped AE damage. This is a bit of a problem actually. Its SO easy to defend a keep that the only viable way to take one atm is to ninja it at early hours. This mean that realms who have a population that can be up at these hours will have a huge advantage in open RvR. I had a blast also in one of the RVR nights ago in tier 2 when we where trying to take on the keep I was in the fight for over 1 hour and then logged out ( family , job etc). Initailly we went in fast and was able to to reach 1 st floor but then ORDER fought back back and pushed us back to the ground floor .It was amazing chaos everywhere I started tearing my favourites bright wizards.

Last night the same thing happened i Barak Varr on my server. At first the Order took over the keep in the area and our guild (Mayhem) teamed up to get it back. We were only one group and Order outnumbered us like 3:1. but we got help, and soon there was a large number of Destruction forces masse up outside the keep. It was awesome! I will post a picture when I get home from work. Anyway. Order retreated inside the Keep, and they could not escape and soon a bunch of Greenskins were hammering on the door. It was so cool. Im a Squig Herder myself so I kept nuking the enemy on the walls and the amount of arrows and spells in the air made them retreat out of view on the battlements. Soon the doors collapsed and we charged in. Damn there was heavy fighting inside hehe. I love RvR now. And if I ever see a Keep in the hands of the Horde, guess where I'm gonna be ;) Cheers |

I agree keep mobs should be toned down a bit... However, this is where server-wide strategy comes into play. On our server Order usually gets a keep through pairing-wide strategic play. Say we initially hit a keep in Troll Country.. during the time needed to get enough people in WB to actually have a chance the destro zerg forms for defense and we can't do a thing. At that moment someone in the WB says - "lets hit them where they don't expect us - let get Barak Varr!" Everybody goes to the flight master and we assemble in dwarflands in 2 minutes with a fully formed warband. Usually we manage to take the keep before the destros realize we'we even gone away, not to mention where we actually are. |

Hehe nice story, thanks for sharing that. I like the second day how you set out to defend that keep all by yourself. You should get a city statue for that, lol. |

norgadnaz is an old hand at mmorpg.com. Have respect man. He doesn't really need to actually play a game to know all about it. He doesn't even need to know the game's name to be fully confident that it is crap compared to sheer awesomeness that is WoW... and he isn't afraid to share his wisdom with us uninitiated who actually need to see to know. Sometimes I wish I had his integrity and strength of character. No really. I envy people like that. |

Thanks for sharing this story. I'm just lvl12 with my highest and have only had 1 day with real RvR with Keeps and such, and it wasn't on this scale, but it was still a blast and I can't wait for more. Playing: Xbox360. |

I had a blast defending a keep with 4 other guys in Marshes of Madness yesterday. The attackers were only 10 or so, so I'm guessing that even without us they wouldn't have gotten the Keep Lord anyway - at least they didn't appear organized enough. Was a lot of fun cooking them with oil :) |

Oh man, you know what's awesome? Lots of attacks can hit enemies through the keep door (this goes both ways). So while the attackers are busy breaking down the door, my Magus can drop daemon mines (which work through the door), plant his daemon turret (which fires through the door), and use several non-targeted AoE attacks to deal tons of damage to all the enemies near the door. It doesn't take many defenders to repel a large attack force, especially when they (finally) get inside to fight the keep lord. Only bad thing is, this encourages 3 A.M. ninja zerg sieges.
