Wide scope hardware testing is part of any application's "beta" testing. Or did you think that they do straight from development into production? (Uzik ibnYaraq in game. Always willing to help.)

You can call it whatever you wanna call it but external people are finally being brought in to the testing process and this is exciting. As others have stated this does in fact mean the beginning of beta, "Beta Test" is an initial system test or check with a selected group . I would have to say that qualifys. The first phase of Beta has begun, the other phases will follow gradually. Play-testing is a further stage that will soon follow the technical phase. Open Beta is obviously the last stage, and will most likely be free for all. "Once we've concluded this phase, we will gradually allow more people in based on various other criteria associated with the testing needs. We may not announce the start of every phase. All the testing up to the open beta phase is protected by NDA."

The phase the "game" is currently in is Alpha, Not beta. as a software developer that has been working in the commercial world for over 10 years, it's clear the stage they are at would be described as 'beta'. alpha means rudimentary functionality, missing features, and known bugs. these guys have said the game has been feature complete and in active internal testing for several months. it's clearly beta.
