Here is the link to the thread on the official forums.  I am having trouble formatting it here.

~ ~ ~

Welcome to a rehashing of FAQs in a longer but easier to read format. There's some really good and somewhat accessible info here. I thanks Xantheous of DROW.org for his research.

Instant messaging, an IRC-style chat system, in-game message/trade boards, voice support, and mobile phone SMS messaging.

You can also toggle off tells and chats so you have to be face to face with someone to talk to them. (A little something for the RPers!)

edit: is armor a big factor in combat? e.g. if one guy has super awesome armor, can he own like 5 guys by rolling his face all over the key board?
There won't be any items that powerful. In fact, equipment in general only grants you a nominal advantage in battle. If anything, expect to get a little bit of an edge over another player with good armor.

"The gloomer isn't in the game in its original form. The concept remains but has been added on and improved. The attackers need to protect their assets and their challenge shard - which isn't stationary anymore but in the hands of a clan leader. While in possession of the challenge shard, the holder is a bleep on the defender's and attacker's maps and global messages are issued. He cannot use magical means of transportation, and his clan has to protect him while the defenders and allies need to kill him within the allotted time in order to break the siege. There are other ways to break the siege, by taking attacker territories, or defending your clan stone."

Not necessarily the clan leader, but a clan leader. Someone can be chosen for this position.
~ ~ ~
Quote:
2. Can a clan leader nominate a person in their clan to "carry the stone" for a given siege, for instance, if they can't be online? We have a very active clan with a slightly less than active leader - will our sieges be limited by his amount of online time?
Nominate away! Darkfall has a very complex clan management system. You won't ever feel restricted by artificial clan structuring.

The looting system is very similar to UO's, if you've ever played it. You have to open up their corpse box, then manually drag items you want into your inventory. As far we know, nothing is unlootable.

I planed to be a wandering alfar necromancer...
but now that spells take regrants & magic weapon (staff/wand), I'll be limited to how close a friendly town is/how large my inventory is/how much money I have to purchase items/how many regrants I plan to risk losing just leaving a town.

I planed to be completely on my own (reason for being alfar) but if I can't defend myself when I lose my regrants then there's really nothing I can do on my own is there?
You'll have to trust an old UO vet, when I say it won't be a problem. UO had a reagent system, open pvp, and full loot. It sucked to have your regs looted, but it was hardly the end of the world. It's no different than a warrior requiring a sword, shield, armor, etc. Mages will need to be mindful of the tools of their trade as well.

An NPC's refusal of service is a pretty significant thing, since they give out special rewards and profitable quests to good-aligned characters. Also, other players will receive a positive alignment boost for killing a player of evil alignment. So, players looking to boost their alignment and get those special rewards and advantages are going to be hunting down evil aligned characters at every opportunity.

The ultimate repercussion to an evil alignment is that you essentially have to live as an outlaw. The only other people who are going to want to share you company is other outlaws... unless they're looking to boost their alignment. Then you really can't trust anyone.

How accurate will the in-game world be when compared to the maps that have been out? Will there be as much, if not more water than land in Agon?
Since the world was hand-crafted, we can guess that it'll be pretty accurate.
As for the size of the ocean. We know that it takes 4 hours to get to the edge of the map from land via ship. It takes about 12 hours to reach the edges of land via mount. Ships, in general, are faster than mounts...

So my fuzzy math says the ocean will be huge.

There are two options for teleportation that we know of. The first, is using portals. These are located in remote areas and warp you inside a random part of a dungeon (to prevent portal camping). The other, is using a UO-style recall spell. You mark a spot with a spell and the memory is enchanted within a rune. You can then cast a recall spell on the rune to teleport to that spot.

To quote Claus:

- runes will be rare and expensive
- casting Mark on a rune will take 10-12 minutes
- moving while casting Mark will break the spell
- areas can be protected from Marking runes
- casting teleportation on a rune takes 40-50 seconds
- the rune has to be in your backpack when teleporting
So you can see how it's a pretty arduous process to teleport.

You acquire skills and spells by being trained by NPCs, or even other players. Some training requires certain quests to be finished first, so you wouldn't be able to do it all in a few minutes.

There is background, but you will be expected to write your own story in Darkfall. It's a sandbox, not an amusement park ride that carts you through a generic story line. You want an epic storyline? Do something epic, be a part of the world around you. Don't just be a tourist.

• Can we shoot the ranged weapons, like bows and crossbows, with their real shooting distance?
Bows will be more realistic than most games, because they will fire with an arc, have a limited range and the arrows have their own velocity. They should have a very real feel to them.

You won't need a torch, but you might want one. If you plan on doing anything clandestine, you certainly won't want to make yourself visible in the dark with fire. I'm sure that the subterranean Alfar will find the dark most advantageous.

There is no raid formation system or classes in Darkfall. Players will be expected to organize their own formations manually. You'll need strong leaderships in charge of your party to manage such a thing, but it can be done.

• There will be a real difference between armors? (i.e. the plate armor penetration is less than leather armor).
Armor varies in how much damage it blocks, how much it slows you down, and how much noise it makes when you move. Different kinds of armor will be more suitable in different situations.

• All in Darkfall is made around combat or will be a balance between combat, crafting, etc.?
While Darkfall's combat features are something we tend to dwell on, I think that it's only part of the overall appeal. You can quite literally craft every object in the game (maybe except for certain rare items.) Remember that all items and equipment have a decay rate and this game is full loot. This mean crafters will be a huge and integral part of Agon's economy, since there is a never-ending need for their services.

Aventurine also has created the most dynamic PvE system ever. Not only do monsters run away when hurt, seek help, and try to outsmart players, but they also have their own ecology. If you over-farm a certain spawn, they will migrate to a safer place. If you leave a spawn alone for too long, it will grow stronger and bigger and eventually create champion creatures.

The entire world is massive and hand-crafted. There is nothing restricting you from climbing to the highest mountains or exploring the winding subterranean underworld. Adventurers and explorers will love this game.

• Will we have all commands in buttons, or will we have to write them in the chat? (commands like /help, /dance, /bow, /cry, etc).
Darkfall's GUI is highly customizable and has tons and tons of features. I don't know if it will have buttons for emotes, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

I've also heard it is going to be VERY minimalistic.

Quote:
• About PvP: Will the mages have the possibility to cast in movement? And how will be the PvP system? Like UO?
Mages will move slower while they cast. Since Darkfall has an FPS aspect to it, I doubt mages would entirely "freeze" while casting, like they did in UO.

Unfortunately, hit boxes were dropped after come consideration. So, no, a hit to the head won't do more damage. Hit boxes can contribute to lag during large scale battles, so the decision was made to cut them out. It's really too bad, but I think they made the right decision. The good news is that if you attack somebody in their backside, it will deal more damage than the front. So sneaky players have a bit of an advantage there.

Also what difference would there be from someone with 1 swordsmanship and someone with 99 swordsmanship?? Faster swings? Higher damage etc???
We haven't heard of skill requirements to hold weapons.

Skills will in one way or the other affect everything you do. If you have 1 swordsmanship expect weak, sloppy, slow blows. At 100, you will be lethal.

Players can be knocked off their mounts, and the mount can even be killed while the player is riding it. I don't know how far mounts wander after their master is killed, but you can probably find them in the vicinity of your corpse.

Piggybacked with that question...
Lets say Silky can NOT do that, that you have to be in one of the clans that are at war to take a keep. Can a member from Clan A sneak into Clan B's keep, and again, providing they aren't paying attention at all for whatever reasons, single handedly take the keep?
Yes. During a siege, both cities become vulnerable to an attack. A sneak from Clan B could theoretically single-handedly take Clan A's keep as well.

Darkfall will have a very deep city/clan management system that will allow you the flexibility to run your land as you wish. You can sell plots on your land and evict people at will. We don't know all the circumstances involved in taxation, but a sales tax of some sort should be possible.

Yes, there may even be a skill involved in identifying people. There are infiltration skills that allow you to appear to be in different clan, so a detective may be needed to counter this.

There is a clan-map that can be used to issues order and mark certain points of interest. I don't know if there are prerecorded command messages, but they do seem to be pretty popular in team-based games nowadays.

This game will have a lot for casual players, depending on where they set their goals. We usually get updates every other Friday, but it's not guaranteed. Ass. Producer Tasos Flambouras usually has an update published on http://df.warcry.com but his contact there recently left that site.

I'd recommend using http://darkfallinfo.com/ to read up on past updates. You'll find lots of goodies there!

One of the really cool things about Darkfall is that you can you use weather, darkness, cover and sheathed weapons to hide the presence of your troops. What's even cooler is that this means that scouts are going to be very important for any army. I'd hate to ruin that with an overhead shot.

Clan stones also mean that you get to have access to the resources in the surrounding land, which will be quite a prize. There will also be NPC cities and villages that can be conquered. If you have a clan stone, you have the ability to build defenses around it. Sieging those defenses will be a difficult and expensive task.

The instruction book for the demo was released in a Dev journal, and there was a key bound for crawling/swimming. So yes, you can sneak in the grass!

If yes, can those espions do terrorist attack into a city/fortress (or do a bank (or something else) theft) ?
There will be absolutely no magic-style invisibility abilities in Darkfall. The reason for this being is that you can wear all leather/cloth, sheath your weapon, use quiet footsteps, and sneak in and out of shadows. Stealthing is going to be manual, and extremely realistic in this game.

Can you hide in for example a huge bush?
We haven't seen any information to indicate that you can climb trees. We know there's a climbing skill, but that might just be for terrain. Housing is destructible, but I doubt you can just go around and commit random arson. You can hide in huge bushes and other types of terrain.

Do you see the names of other people? Or Can I pretend to be someone I'm not?
The only way that you can see a player's name is to move your reticle on their character and hold it there. There are no silly names floating above people's heads in Darkfall. You can pretend you're someone you're not with a disguise skill, that even changes your clan affiliation.

 Thanks for the effort!

As a technical writer I have to say that in no way is that easier to read, you may want to look into spacing/font/formatting to achieve separation between questions and answers, as well as better spacers than ~~~

make a longer one, w/ double lines
