No general chat or world/global chat is the best thing ever they could do for an mmorpg, main city's and outposts/villages/towns should be the hubs of the game where people gather to trade/chat  meet people/groups/guilds etc. 

There are already plenty of people out in the world to chat while out adventuring , and actualy chat about things in that area , we dont need to hear what everyone on the server is doing at all times .

It makes for a better in game feel when its only people in your area chat, you go to a main city or hub and the chat lights up, then you head out to a far  away hard to get to place and the chat is silent , as it should be couse your alone .

People want the choice .... ever heard of choice ? And if you dont want chat you can turn it off.

I changed the color and its now im my own made channel, yes the /1 channel is dead atm, but i think that will change later, everyone trying out classes and such, dont think they have time for it right now.. but yea, the channel is dead atm :-) dont think it wont be for long tho... plus someone has to break the ice.. try start a conversation :-)

I'm not in game yet, but since Open Beta community was almost all pre-order people, I'm guessing things haven't changed much.

The game does have the least chat of any MMORPG I've ever played, but I'll also admit that all MMORPGs seem to have seen a huge decline in chat just in the last two years.

If you say "Hi" to someone in this game, they are more likely to run the other way than say anything back. It's like reminding them that the game isn't solo breaks their immersion, or something.

Or maybe they are all just shy. :)

Not only is there a general chat, but even if there wasn't, what's wrong with that? Plenty of MMOs have gotten on fine without general chat. In fact sometimes it even adds to the game. Mythic's first game didn't have a general chat, and it ENCOURAGED community, to join things like alliance chats. There was a newbie guild though that you automatically got put in which was a form of newbie general chat, which was fine.

Ya chat isnt very active right now in the head start , but more of these people were in the beta/Pw's and already know wha tthey want to do and where they want to be whe nthe game goes live o nthe 18th .

The first Pw chat was always full in the busy area's  as you would expect, after release on the 18th im sure it will be full again over full . Once people get into the game and get settled the chat will be more alive.

I dont see how anyone would want a general channel so they can hear the constant wow/war/eq  flaming and corny jokes etc etc all day every day , because that is all it will be , even more so here .

Tier chat is great world chat would suck it also mitigates spam potential. You want to chat with someone join a guild with Vent or TS  or group and use party chat. Did you everyone think people aren't chatting because they might actually be to busy fighting and enjoying the game? We've already had the unfortunate situation of dwarfs running around naked in battle if that is the only imports from WOW then thank god!! We not need Chuck Norris anything or Gold Spammers.

Who said they cant do it them self ? sure wasnt me , of course i changed the chat color who wouldnt  , im saying it should be set different  as default , so people dont have to change it them self , most  games you have to make your own chat channel seperate from system/combat messages etc to get the chat how you like , but they also usualy have different pre set default window/color to start with as well as being able to change them your self .

Anyone can click a button and change something nothing special about , doing it your self or having it already pre set doesnt make you special and doesnt mean your thinking for your self .

People will use general chat to talk about WoW, from my experience. Best to leave it off.

why did you guys help the OP out?  This is a prime example of the types of folks we all hate seeing chat in General Chat.  The people who constantly ask the most nub questions and throw tantrums as if theyre mom just discovered their protien deposits in their shorts.
