MMOs require more reasoning and imagination than most stereotypically ''adult'' activities. |

You are both saying that taking away a player's freedom to solo when they want to is how you improve "community" in a MMORPG. From my own experience that is absolutely NOT the case at all. I do admit that the first thing I do in a MMORPG is turn off the General/Broadcast channel as the chatter there is very immersion breaking. |

why would i talk in general chat when i leave it off 90% of the time.
Had a great time yucking it up with people in the DE PQs and RVR...but most of the time i keep to my guild and friends. Just like in wow, eq1 and eq2, as well as almost all mmorpgs...i never ever talk in general chat. BUT that doesnt mean i am not sociable. I love talking to people, and mostly while out in the game. Hell our guild invited like 8 people last night alone just because they loved talking to us.

It's nothing Mythic had done wrong, they have a great game. You are right though, so far the community seems to be non-existant. It's like everyone is playing all by themselves

Yeah back in DAoC I joined my first guild and they taught me a lot (the game was harder to learn than the frill WoW games out now) and really became attached to em. Then when I joined WoW the guild channel was just a glorified LFG. Now why they turn out that way is mostly the players fault, and maybe 5% the game. People just have to drop the "i'm a sologrouper lo!!!" mindset and get into the idea that the game is supposed to be social game and actually type the keyboard. I also kinda chalk it up to ventrillo and those since it takes people from typing and just talking, making even guild channels dead whenever people are on. So if you make a pick up group, those stargers will n ever be approached as a person and spoken to, just seen as another body. |

I wasn't in closed beta and I got in.... But I preordered and I live in America.
But towards the OP I talked to some people and was in a few groups yesterday. You have to remember their were a lot of newbies trying to get a feel for the game before getting in a party. I always like to get to know my character so I can play it better before I get into groups. |

Game communitys never form on a night anyways, takes at least 3 months after release. Theres always lots of people starting, trying it out and then quiting. And WAR probably got many boardgamers trying it out and many of them never tried an MMO before so it takes some time getting in to it. Im sure things will be better in 3 months. |

I do admit that the first thing I do in a MMORPG is turn off the General/Broadcast channel as the chatter there is very immersion breaking. It's not exactly that. In EQ you could solo pretty much. But, at some point, you'd need help to recover your body, or the cross a zone, or you just got lost and needed directions, among other things. So if you had been an ass, maybe you didn't get that help. But it's not exactly that either. You felt grateful to people, becuase chances were they already had helped you in the first place as a newbie, so you naturally reacted being nice and helpful. It was very common when being helped when you were a newbie, the guy told you to do the same when you reached higer levels, it was a kind of a code. Same with giving money. |

Not true. Communication in games are always bullshitting around and having fun. I know every game I play I love to talk in chat. Whether it be lineage 2, world of warcraft, silkroad, rappelz, neocron...you get my drift.
That's what really surprised me about warhammer to be honest, is the chat system. I've asked this AND have tried to get answers. I really don't understand why there isn't a major world chat. It really ticks me off that there isn't more chatting on the game, even in tier 1. Who cares. It's still people playing together. RVR, public quests, etc... seems like everyone is doing their own thing and at some times it feels like you're solo. =/ Guess I need to find a good guild that talks alot and has fun..otherwise guess there won't be bullshitting around on the chats...because they are based on zones correct? if they are and only are, that's retarded.
I feel like I'm solo and alone on warhammer at times. It sucks to feel like that, but it feels like the game is dead when there's no chat going on. I don't know, it's weird that I feel that way, just do...and of course warhammer isn't dead, it's just starting. I'm just saying...eh. |

But chatting in wow for instance in beta, it was VERY active. Because, it was so easy to communicate to everyone. I don't know how the chat system works on this game...whether a shout can be seen from anywhere or what...if it's based on zones or what? but I think they need world chat...that would be great. I like talking about life and having fun and bullshitting around and talking pvp in the chat....dunno...makes the game more fun when you're talking with others that are playing. |

I agree that a good community is essential for an MMO, and I've always been an advocate for more group-based gameplay. After all, it is a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER online game... but I guess I'm in the minority with that thought. With that said, General Chat is generally the boon of all good communities. A lot of veteran MMO players probably turn it off as soon as they start the game. It's filled with annoyances (ie: Barrens chat) that detract from gameplay. I'd much rather only see my guild or party talking, people who are not annoying 24/7. We shouldn't be complaining about the community in the beta version of the game. Wait until the second month of the game's release, when the people who want to keep their subscription open past the free month are playing. That will be the community of WAR. |

and i am talking to others...just not in general chat....i hate general chats....seems to attract all the chuck norris or racist people (see AoC) I tend to stay in the area chats, spatial and guild/group/alliance...thats it

it seems to me in the 4 servers ive tried out that the community is willing to talk in scenerios and pdqs but really everyone wants to try out every class. im normally a chatter box on the general chats but i find myself so into the game and how it plays that i frankly dont give a damn atm. im just trying to get my peekaboo of the classes and skills with my hands (as i was not in CB). Also a community that dosent talk is better than one with bigots and gold spammers. i know its only beta but hey im liking it so far. |

Well the game is in time limited beta. Everyone is busy experimenting with the different classes and learning about the game. And some might stay and some might not even try the game. So really there is no point in having long winded chats. If you really into chatting try a web based chat room. |
