You have to seperate out the marketing from the technical side.

Generally most people are not going to understand what Beta is all about which is why we have a lot of people with expectations thats are out of whack with the purpose of OB from a technical perspective.  Thats easy to put right if you make it clear what the objectives of OB are and detail some of the expected experiences people are likely to have

You cant deny that OB has also been used as a serious part of the marketing strategy for the game.  Whilst it is common for firms to employ people with poor experience and judgement there are quite a few aspects in eu certainly where the marketing from a customer point of view isnt helpful and is downright damaging.  

The EU website are posting news thats consistent with a good public relationship strategy if the game was live but it is counter productive for this OB where literaly 10.000's of people have been invited to logon to create theeir gaming accounts from 08.30 with an expectation of being able to play (in some form or another ) late afternoon early evening.

Thry ought to be tellign people to pack up and try again tommorrow wit ha brief explanation fo whats actually been going on.

As it stands at the moment a lot of potential customers are being led to a state of confussion and actually have little idea of what they should be doing if they want to get in and take a look at the game.

Beta is meant to get the bugs out before release so they're still doing their part of the job. We're just there to test... atleast they actually listen to feedback instead of just shrugging it off and saying "to hell with you".

And if you think you paid for open beta access you're just fooling yourself. You paid early for retail and they were NICE ENOUGH to give you the opportunity to test the game out for them and help make it that much better. You're doing your part by bitching, just bitching at the wrong people on unofficial forums... gg.

That's sometimes how it goes. I can understand your frustration as it has happened to us to with other games. But don't take it out on others simply because they don't have your problem. You could be right about GOA having problems on launch day, since they are having problems with OB launch, but at the same time, realize they have a week to get the stuff fixed. Though I do have a problem with people who complain about anybody that complains about anything as a blanket policy, I think this is really a clash of cultures issue. The europeans aren't used to being treated as badly as we are over here, and get genuinely offended by the practice of "overpromise and underdeliver" much faster than your average american gamer it seems. In beta, stuff happens.

 

Clash of cultures.. American or European culture, there isn't that much of a difference I think.

The eu war site is broken thus a lot of eu gamers can't play the open beta so a lot of them complain, as far as I know the american signup pages are just working.. and if they weren't I think there would be complaining as well...

 

European culture, especially across various countries, is pretty different from ours but very true re our complaints in their position, but there'd be a bunch saying "stop complaining" whereas the europeans seem unified in their derision.

 

 

 

I was thinking in terms of being used to bad treatment. Northern part of america and the eu are mostly pretty wealthy compared to the rest of the world.

And europeans are never unified in a decision :P just think about the whole mess with the Georgian Nation, europe was as always as devided as it can be.

But frankly I don't believe there is a lot of difference european or american people in terms of complaining about "unfairness in out eyes" If you think that in america there will always be someone who will say "stop complaining" and in europe we all agree on the complaining we just have different opinions about this.

So you're saying in America we get people to stfu and get stuff done instead of bickering back and forth and accomplishing nothing? I can go with that.

Well done on totally missing the point..oh and i see you have this attitude because you are from America and your beta is up and running. If Goa are not ready to let players in a week from launch then the launch of the game will be a disaster.

They told us that every thing was fine with their servers and that they expected no problems, they were even cocky in saying this....I am sure you wouldn't have this attitude if you were a european player, perfect case of "i got my beta screw the rest of you" you don't deserve to be a community manager if you are going to post nonsense.

Total BS. Funny how my CC was charged the full Dollar amount so that I could pre-order and get the beta code. Sounds to me like I paid for the privlage to test your product. Which I will be cancelling before it ships and I get stuck with it.

No matter how you want to spin this you failed totally in your preparations. I can't wait to see how your game impolodes when you really get hammered on a patch day by even more people.

Tthey shouldnt be effectively mixing up selling/marketing the game but you havent been cheated out of anything and this OB access is actually a good thing to be offering people - it has just not been thought out well enough.

By all means get angry but there is plenty of advice and there was plenty of advice knocking about before you bought the product on the basis you did, as to what BETA is.

We have to assume you read it and put a spin on it in your head or you didnt read it.

Fact is it is Mythic that should know people like you form a huge percentage of their potential business and for those reasons alone they shouldnt have allowed what happened to today to happen - it was all perfectly avoidable.   They havent cheated you though and to base your decison on the game etc on this is just pointless and shows you are not attempting to take on board what people with better knowledge than you are trying to tell you.

The difference between us is that *most* of us over here dont need a game 24/7 so we dont get all huffy and puffy over something not going live or being playable at a certain time.

MMO's are rarely served perfectly on a silver platter. Step off the soap box, we and the rest of the world by now realize that you cant log on by some mistake. It happens not the end of the world.

Because the latest trend is to not let people play a demo or try the game out. All that is left is Open Beta, which is never free these days, unless you camp Website to catch the odd free OB key they are handing out. Personally, I don't care about the whole thing. I payed 10 Euro so I could test it, and if it is rubbish, I can save myself 40 Euro. Conclusion is: it's rubbish, so I can spend those 40 Euros on something more useful this week.

Do not know if you have any experience at all about europe or just making things up in your mind. But can tell you from experience that NA (North America) is much more customer complaint heavy than Europe. There is a reason why lawsuits are over 100 times more occuring in US than Europe about customer dissatisfaction. And yes, I know what I am talking about, I own a company where I have a Euro office and a US office. Both have things that are better in the other office, but when it comes to complaints, the US office have had to hire 2 extra support personel just to handle installations by phone as the customers cannot install products by reading manual. On the other side I have had to hire 2 more support personel externaly in Europe as customers there manage to screw up their systems more often.

Totally BS. In some countries you CANNOT get that $5 back, therefore you are paying to be in beta.This is what happens when Mythic uses beta as a marketing tool rather than for testing purposes. Saw marks blog earlier and he was stating how he didn't understand why some people were upset... well not getting a service they paid for might be a good place to start. The actual beta for this game is being done by the elder testers, OB is just a marketing farce to get fanbois to feel like they are special.

Maybe if stores and game designers would stand behind what they sell with a return policy, it would eliminate people wanting to play a game for free and result in better games being released.  I personally have plopped down 50 plus dollars for a game that is hyped to be awesome and find it's garbage too many times.  Oh..........you can return it for a piece of crap with the same title....wonderful.   Let's think of some examples.............Vanguard-on release, Two Worlds,  Spiderman for PC, Total Annihilation, etc., etc.

That is what Demo's and Trail Accounts are for - not beta tests. Give it time and there will be trail accounts for WAR too.

dont understand why ppl still debating about paying for open beta, WAR themselves have gone out and sees the participants in Open Beta as paying customers. So how can some people here still claim its some sort of benefit? If its a benefit or bonus you dont sell it as part of a package.
