Hello everyone I've always played FPS multiplayer games, and I've always interested in trying out an MMO, so several years ago I tried WOW, and I was sorely disappointed (no offense to the WOW players here) but it seemed like the game was just so slow and so much walking (no offense to the people who like to walk). So I gave it up. But its always there in my head and with all the MMOs floating around, I thought to myself theres gotta be a game for me out there. So recently I tried AOC (i know I probably shouldnt mention AOC because just the mere mention of that game seems to inflame people worse than hemmoroids, but anyway I liked it, I guess the Key to these games is the Role Playing, Yeah i agree AOC has some issues, especially the PVP aspect of it, coming from FPS games where its not the class or the time spent online that matters, its the skill so with that in mind I have a couple of questions hoping some of you could answer 1. What do these terms mean -nerf, raids, and if there are others I should know please feel free to share 2.Is there an MMO pvp that doesnt solely rely on the level of the player I mean i Understand a level 1 shouldnt be able to beat a lvel 100 but something a little bit more skill based 3. Is AOC really that bad compared to other MMOS (no fanboy answers from either side please) 4. I'm trying to immerse myself in the lore of AOC but its kinda hard when, I'm told by NPC that I'm the one, the Messiah the one who will save the world, only to find out that all the other 10 subscribers of AOC were also told the same thing. I dont mind doing quests small time more in keeping with the Role playing aspect of it, what game has that. 5. Is there an MMO released or upcoming that has real guns and have a FPS control system and real gunbattles (wishfull thinking). Thank you |

well you could look at TCoS,it is upcomming so you would be there for the launch. It doesnt have guns but it does use FPS tactics as in you have a sight that has to be aimed and hit the enemy for your spells/attacks to hit. The game also has alot of what you asked for like a much lower level can beat a higher level if he is more skillful, although the higher level would have an advantage due to more powerful spells but if you can outplay him and avoid better than you can win. here is a link to the offical forums and a link to the sticky on this forum http://tcos.com/sbforum/?sid=&lng=en http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/192358

1 - Nerf is a common term used when some aspect/class/spell/etc in a game needs to be toned down, or something has been toned down ( or balanced ) in the game. Raid is the common term used to the action of several ppl ( a group of groups ussually ) going into a dungeon whit tought bosses. 2 - My take on this would be to tell you to go and try EVE online, theres a 15day trial, BUT first it is a VERY different mmo from the usual u'll see, its VERY complex ( wich i find good ) and its also a niche game so its not for everybody, once u get the hang of the game to be able to Compete whit 3+ years old players you NEED to focus on a certain role and in a couple months you'll be just as effective as them.
Just dont listen to what ppl say actually, and try it yourself it may or not be for you. but 15days trial cant hurt right?
3. IMO, its a good game, what have so many ppl "upset" is that FunCom, told A,B & C would be in game, and at realese they werent, even if printed on the box (DX10 for example )
4. Yeah well that happens in some mmo's
5. Tabula Rasa has a FPS game style ( IT IS NOT an FPS in the whole meaning but its the closest you'll get) and its a very fun game, it only lacks endamge, but its cool and i think it has a free trial as well, so there you go find em and try em along whit EVE so you can make the call. Thank you |

1. Nerfs are when the developers make an ability or class worse because the playerbase would not stop whinning that it was too powerful. Raids are are dungeons that are also second jobs that require large groups like 20 or 30 or 50, they also require you to do them over and over and over again to get the best loot, then keep doing it some more so your guild can get the best gear. 2. There are mmos that allow people to play on a more level ground like Guild Wars but as for skill based no there isn't, MMOs are pretty much all about boring random dice based combat where you character assumes all the hard parts so that the player can exert minimal effort, err... I mean tactical combat. 3. Depends on what you mean by bad, if you like games like Eve than yes AoC is bad, there isn't enough micromanagment or flowcharts and you can get to places in a timely manner. But if you just want a game where you can run around kill various things with some friends then it works fine, I think the combat is meh and the world is meh, all around a ok game. 4. The games with quest usually try to make you feel like you are doing something special, you could always try a game with no quests what so ever like Ryzom, where you are left to amuse yourself. 5. No, sadly, most people would not even consider the game to be an RPG if there was actual aiming happening. |

terminology differs from game to game. and as for aoc, lets just agree its the most "twitchy" decent mmo you can play. twitch combat being that of FPS. there is actually ALOT (comparatively) of real person skill envolved in pvp, especially for mele classes. alot of pvp outcome depends on postioning, and moving around. (ie you can always kill people bad at moving by circle strafing and hitting combos on thier back). then again AoC is nowhere near perfect (mmo's never are like FPS), and no me and many are waiting for a decent MMO with FPS combat. its what I dream about other than naked women of course. |

The closest thing that I have ever experienced to an FPS in an MMO isn't Tabula Rasa, Neocron, Planetside or anything else that actually has FPS in it but Guild Wars. Why? Well, the PvP aspects of the game are a lot like death match or capture the flag in an FPS only with skills that you have to use instead of guns. I don't know how to explain it, but this is the closest MMO type game that I have found to an FPS (at least in the form of PvP). And if you like PvP you should try WAR once it is released. Yes, it is skill based but there is nothing else in the MMO world quite like Realm vs. Realm. You will become addicted. |

No one has mentioned it but I think you might like Guild Wars. The pvp part. It can be very exciting, and though it is not like a target and shoot type game, there is a lot of fast paced action. Also, you don't have to contend with some of the parts of mmo's that some like but some do not (such as crafting or economy/trading, etc)
Also, if Huxley ever gets done you might look into that as it is definitely a game that an fps player might like. |

Yeah, check out Spellborn. Manual aiming, manual dodge, WASD, no dice rolls, and a customised skill selection ("Skilldeck") - all a FPS player would ever want from an MMORPG. |

Upcoming you might like: DC Online, Champions, Spellborn, Fallen Earth, Jumpgate Evolution, Huxley, All Points Bullentin (no levels from what I gather, willb e player skill based)
Current: Guild Wars. What counts is your player skill over time played.
I'm huge into FPS games as well and I adored Guild Wars very much. Besides that, tryout BF2142 for a good mix. Not MMO- but it has persistent stats and unlocks to earn |

Planetside was at one time thee massive FPS to play. But it IS made by SOE, an orcs and dorks company. The FPS-end of the game reflects that in mechanics so forgiving that it straddles a hazy line between level based/gear based Muhmopurgers and Eff Pee Ess. The TTKs are too long. So long that when facing two players simultaneously you will certainly die regardless of your skill... Unless the other player in the tag-team is playing ala stephen-hawking-tongue-waggling, brain-dead, or a small furry critter striking random keys whilst walking across it, you will die. It turns the action into a game of he who fields the most bodies wins. No more headshots on 4 players in rapid sucession before the last one down hardly had a chance to blink. I highly recommend Battlefield 2142- even though I am not happy about the ridiculous CoF penalties that force you to stand still to maintain any degree of workable accuracy. Doing this makes you stand out like a spahgetti stain on a white T-Shirt and every enemy within line of sight from a mile away will instantly draw a bear upon your backside... This makes the game a tit-for-tat field-leveler as far as traditional FPS style is concerned... but if you wisen up as the game insists you do, employing strategy, it ain't so bad. It's been my home for more than a year or so now after 3 years of planetside, each year less fun than the last. Cheers. |

As a fellow fps fan I would recommend waiting for huxley it will be on ijji.com soon, APB and the agency will be out next year both should be good. Also Fallen Earth and Earthrise will be out next year they are more of a standard mmo if thats what your looking for. If you havent played Planetside or wwiionline you should check out there trials. Theres also endlessages and neocron ,but i think they are both near death.

Currently the genre is on life support, thanks to multiple developers dropping shit sandwiches and hoping someone would eat them.
This is due to change with at least one classic style MMO coming out that looks good, Aion, and some interesting new players in Fallen Earth, CotS, and maybe Warhammer (though be careful with all three, there's significant hype clouds moving around each one (except CotS, but the fact that every person is wary of that game isn't a good sign in and of itself). Well, AOc is the only MMO with FPS "twitch" style gameplay. However, the type of game you are probably looking for is one with fast combat speed, or one that has a lot of crap going on at once. I suggest: City of Heroes - to emulate action packed battles. It is a very straight forward and simple MMO, with a lot of flare, customization, and chaotic battles. Guild War - for a fairly complex PvP fix. It has a very slight Diablo feel to me. Warhammer Online - it has slow combat, but the PvP is amazing. Once you start to partake int he PvP battles, things won't seem as slow.
The thing with most MMO games is that they all start off ridiculously slow. You sit around and spam 1 or 2 abilities while you watch your character fight. However once you hit around level 10 - 20 (depending ont he game) Things open up to you and combat will actually become fun. If you join a group after 20 and run through a dungeon, you'll really find where MMO combat shines. Think of an MMO game like an RTS game, but you only control 1 character. If you played Defense of the Ancients in Warcraft 3, that is what MMO are about in a nutshell. Getting stronger for more intense battles. The class you choose also makes a huge difference in whether you like a game or not. For example, in WoW I bet you would like a Mage, Rogue, and Hunter. These classes are constantly using their abilities and running and jumping around to keep the edge over their enemies. |
