MMORPG.com's Carolyn Koh was at the recent Penny Arcade Expo and dropped by to speak with Alan Dunkin of DUngeon Runners. In thsi report, she tells us about the game and the upcoming Chunk #4 Update.

Dungeon Runners is a Casual Free to Play game from NCSoft. An easy to get into, quick to play, hack and slash game with some of the funniest crude humor around in an MMOG. A light hearted spoof of the MMOG genre with snarky names, funny dialogue and information. Weapons for example have speeds that range from grandma and slothful to ludicrous and freakin' fast. Quests send you to rescue some guy in a dungeon but you find out that the quest giver is trying to kidnap the guy and hold him for ransom. NPCs thank you sarcastically for busting up their treasure chests or call after you when you buy something that you’ve helped send their kid to school. It’s closer to playing Diablo online than to WoW. It is 15 minutes of fun with a bunch of guild mates while waiting for the server to come up on patch day.

Check it out here.

Cheers,

The only problem I had with Dungeons Runners was that I didn't think it was fun at all. I uninstalled the game fairly quickly. But I am glad that some people are enjoying DR.

Mythos was a vastly superior FTP MMOG, but now it's in developer shutdown limbo, sadly.

I agree, probably one of the more boring f2p games out there, anyone actually paying money to play this game is really ignorant of the many much better f2p games out there.

The dungeon areas are all based on a square, there are no surprises.

Well, not every game meshes with people. But to counteract the peeps who had to go to a Dungeon Runners news article and throw in their 2 cents about being bored by a game, I'll just say I love this damn little game just because it's not trying to be WoW or  a major MMO, it's just a fun game.

If it tried to have depth, it wouldn't be the game it is, and it wouldn't have the awesome community it has. It's simple hack n slash fun, with tons of levels and gear to get. You'll either get it, or you won't.

Funny, I would rather play ancient Diablo II than this game.  Even Diablo II has more fun associated it to it than this game.   That is a serious issue when a 10 year old game has more to offer than a current one.

They should rename it to Wizardry XX, it is about the same thing.

Don't mind Ozmodan, Rev.  Every time there's an article on DR, he flexes his e-peen and rips on it and those who play it. It's one thing to not like a game, but he goes out of his way to pan it.   Here are some choice quotes:

From the Retail Box Interview:

Sorry to rain on NCsoft's parade, but I really don't see how they can charge for this game. The dungeon's are so repetitive it is beyond boring. Even the asian f2p games are so much better.

While this game might have flown 10 years ago, it is so dated by today's standards as not even worthy of mention.

A game with just dungeons in it is just dumb, especially since they repeat the design ad infinitum.

From the Exclusive Game Play Video:

Of all the f2p games this one is probably the most boring. They tried to make a better Diablo and failed miserably. Anyone paying for this game, seriously has no idea what else is out there, almost any other game is better.

From the April 2008 Interview:

The problem with this game, it has a lousy user interface, it gets very boring quickly and the non paying players CANNOT use rainbow items at all, you get a small chance to use purple items.l

HIghly NOT recommended for anyone. Even most of the free to play games are far far better.

(btw, he's totally wrong about the items--at least as of the time this article was written, his info was outdated--, something I pointed out in that thread at the time)

From the March, 2008 heave news:

The only people this game is freaking awesome to are those that have not played it for long.

Believe me there is not a more boring MMORPG out there. Best thing they could do with this game is unplug it.

From the Bling Gnome Parade thread:

I don't get NCsoft, most of the f2p games are far better than this one. Not sure why they bother to update it, Certainly not going to attract many players to it, not when you are at the bottom looking up.

Some people are simply incapable of understanding how somebody could like something they do not and feel the need to express that every chance they have. While DR is one of my favorite games, I don't think it's perfect.  I even make suggestions for improving it on a regular basis, some of which have been implemented in the game (like the difficulty slider,  for example).  Many of my ideas are for creating more difficulty and/or high-end content and adding more diverse game play options.  That being said, I enjoy DR greatly.  It meets my needs and desires for an easy-to-get-into, fun, action-filled casual game.  Silly me for not agreeing with cranky ol' Ozzy.

Basic game...can be fun for short bursts...and you don't have to pay a dime.  It delivers what it intended...a pleasing casual gaming experience.

I can understand some of the criticism this game gets for being a bit of a throwback.  As an older gamer, I find that to be part of its charm.  It fits my time commitment perfectly.  And from the moment I logged into this game, there was absolutely nothing I didn't get.

DR is a great game that isn't afraid to take itself too seriously.  It does a masterful job at pokeing fun at other MMOs.  It does this better than any other game I have played.

The community is a moderate, but tight knit group.  The developers are a genuinely good group of people who can often be found playing the game.  How often does that happen?

I'm not the hardcore gamer anymore.  Heck, I spend almost as much time on this site as I do playing MMO's.   I really appreciate the fact that a company like NCSoft would design a game that suits my needs so perfectly.

My character is Yoshigama.  If any of you are ever on and want help or just hang out and quest.  Look me up.

One sentence said more about the game then the whole article.

While fine for FTP, why pay the premium fee for 15 minutes of fun?

Spend an extra $10 a month and have fun all month long in a better game.
