Vaporware is a somewhat derogatory term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar software/hardware product. The term implies unwarranted optimism, an as yet unannounced abandonment of a project, or sometimes even deception; that is, it may imply that the announcer knows that product development is in too early a stage to support responsible statements about its completion date, feature set, or even feasibility. However, most vaporware would not be considered a hoax since the makers have a genuine intention to create their product, even if it ultimately never materializes. Products with unspecified release dates or long development times that outwardly demonstrate regular, verifiable progress in production are not normally labelled vaporware.
it is the epitomy of the definition of vaporware.
Cant take credit for this because Xris did it in the DF forum...but yea see the highlighted part and feel free to apologize. ~~ Darkfall Recap of everything that has happened the last 3 months: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/213296 "The monsters are tough. God, I'm sorry for reiterating what's been said before, but when I was told on my guild's IRC this morning that people were comparing DF to WAR I audibly went 'WTF?' and had to duck for cover from my parents. How. The. Hell. Can you compare a Triple A-Themepark-RvR-MMO, being devloped by the company that basically perfected RvR based on an IP so rich and plentiful you could start reading now and still be reading 4-5 years from now, to an Indie-devloped FFAPvP sandbox that's still vaporware 5 years into it's 'devlopment'? I don't understand the motivations behind comparing acutal gameplay elements in a game that's releasing in just under two weeks, to one that for the first time in 5 years released a video longer than like, three minutes. Sure, DF might be the second coming for you hardcore FFAers, but simply put - it sure as hell won't compete with WAR. I wish you all the best in it, and I'll probably be seeing you guys in it to... If it ever releases... |

The reason why people are excited about it is because it is a skill based game that allows the players to do pretty much whatever they like and attack whoever they choose. Will it have RvR like Warhammer? No it wont.......it will have RvR that is MUCH better than anything Warhammer can offer. It is offering a hell of a lot more freedom. Not meaning to be rude but wouldnt it be a good idea to know a little bit about the game before writing about it? However it does unfortunately look like crap. Well.......mostly anyway. I thought some aspects of the game looked quite nice, such as the mounted combat in which the mounts seemed to be rather well animated and looked fairly realistic. In WAR you are extremely limited in what you can be and do. Everyone has to pick a class so there are lots of Bright Wizards, lots of Marauders, lots of Gobbo Shamans etc etc. Every class has its own play-style with a limited amount of variation so its very cookie-cutter. In Darkfall you dont have a class as its all skill based so you can create your own character and make it whatever you like. Basicly the difference between the two games is that Darkfall offers variety while WAR does not. Unfortunately the flipside of that seems to be that WAR is a released, polished game with decent graphics and a team of trustworthy & reliable developers behind it while Darkfall doesnt look very good and its developers have a terrible reputation........plus the fact that Darkfall has not been released yet so it could still easily fall flat on its face. ps. Something I do like about Darkfall though is the way combat damage shows on your character. Thats pretty neat. |

The fact that any DF fan has the audacity to make bold and outlandish claims about a game they haven't even spent 1 minute with is priceless. Additionally, the number of attacks by those same players, against ones with clearer heads is mind boggling. (DF might be the best MMO ever created, however, anyone that knows a bit of history surrounding game development and MMO development can easily see all of the warning signs. ) Granted, all of the negativity coming from the other side of the aisle isn't necessary either. We know nothing about the game really, and shouldn't be so quick to judge. HOWEVER.... Most games that have been developed with so little transparency between the developer and the player have turned out to be stinkers. Will DF follow that same pattern? Impossible to say.. The averages say yes, the game will suck. It will claim to do so many things, yet do none of them well. DF will claim to be the ultimate sandbox MMO while the developers have either proven they don't have a legitmate gameplan, or they lack the funding to realize their "vision." Is the above a fact? No. Is it more than likely how things will play out? Yes.

I dont know how darkfall is out of alpha testing, it is the worse looking mmo i have ever seen, and almost the worst looking game i have ever seen to be released. |

Congrats to Darkfall for making it to Alpha phase! Seriously though, it wasnt quite as bad as some people say. I mean I can see the potential. But seriously this game has MMMMMIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLEEEEEESSSSSSSS to go. -Character Models need to be redone, modelling, texturing, armor sets. They look like something out of Unreal 1 (1999). -Graphics Engine needs a huge boost in power. -Particle Effects, fine thats polish, but they look crap and the magic system just looks like pew pew fireballs only... -No UI footage/indication of how combat works. Just random footage. Seriously if they release in 2008 the game is destined to fail. Hard. Unless they adopt a F2P model. No one would pay monthly for a game in this state. Currently Playing Random shizzle!
Waiting on TERA, GW2, TSW |

Do I remind you of someone you used to sit next to? But yeah fair enough I did make quite a few comments as though they were statements which was rather silly of me. OK so it "might" have a better RvR system than WAR "if" it does what it proposes to do. I love the way you refer to it as MY horrible movie though, as though I am one of the Darkfall fanboys. I'm not a fan of either of the two games actually but I suppose I just prefer what Darkfall is attempting to do thats all........not that I think it is going to actually be better than WAR. Lets face it.....on the visual side Darkfall looks like a pile of outdated junk. If it looks anything close to that state if it ever gets released then there is obviously no competition at all......and yes graphics DO matter despite what some people might say. Also the fact that Darkfall has taken 8 years and looks so out of date doesnt say much for the skills of its developers. WAR might not be all that original but it seems to be working well, it looks good and it has a team of reliable developers behind it. Although I support Darkfalls ambitious attempt, I think it is unlikely it will do well. |

Slow combat? care to give some reasoning so we know what to look for? Yea you cant target someone and first off a few homing arrows or fireballs and 3 or 4 shot him...it takes sec to line up your shots, or get to him if your melee. But the video showed some really fast fights that were over in a few hits. The best was the knockback off the cliff and archer in the tree =) ~~ Darkfall Recap of everything that has happened the last 3 months: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/213296 "The monsters are tough. Darkfall has some pretty big promises, but I can almost gurantee you that it won't live up to all of them. It might live up to all the ones that you savour, but not all of them. WAR on the other hand can prolly promise all it's good for, I hope so I put alot of time and money for hoping in this game. WAR is like a hardcore pvp game while Darkfall is like a diplomatic, sandbox styled pvp, can't really compare the two that much. |

Waited years to see this and it's disappointing to say the least. Gameplay looks very poor, twitchy and uncoordinated, animations are terrible and the whole thing looks like every other fantasy mmorpg out there. Can't believe anyone thinks the graphics depicted in the video are good or realistic, they just aren't. Big question is why are people comparing WAR to DF? WAR will be hugely successful, STILL no-one actually knows anything tangible about DF to make any comparisons. I get sick of reading "prove it" posts. Why can't we keep DF on the DF forums and the WAR forums free from jealous invasions? Mods? |

These two games couldn't be farther apart. Why would you make such a comparison to just incite flames. You are such a troll! |

Because WAR doesnt look like every fantasy MMORPG out there...and the graphics are "realistic" as well.... And i LIKE WAR....and you saying WAR will be hugely successful, while i agree with your prediction, isnt fact yet just like AoC. To be clear before you get all upset...I agree that i THINK war will be a huge huge success, but it isnt set in stone yet. oh and wah wah wah mods...while i agree that they are different games, it is a legit comparison and discussion and certainly has its place. dont like it, dont read it. ~~ Darkfall Recap of everything that has happened the last 3 months: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/213296 "The monsters are tough.
