I love the way Aion looks, and have been looking for a game that has such an art style for awhile. It looks very vast and high fantasy, but great quality...my question is...is there any game out right now that looks similar at all to this game? I don't care if it's a grinder or whatever...please let me know. Oh, and it can be another language such as Chinese or Japanese...thanks.

Lineage 2 for p2p, then in f2p you have Shaiya, Rappelz and Last Chaos.

The same designer did the art for Aion, Lineage 2 and Shaiya. You can find his website if you search google.

They may be the same artists, but those games look nothing like aion.

You are taking it too literally.

They have high concept art design, heavy on filligree and inlay and done in a very florid style, in some cases composed of uniquely tapered or fashioned pieces.

They share many similiarities as they do have the same artist who of course utilizes many similar concepts.

I think I know what you are talking about.  I think many people like the generalize too much and they miss the nuances that makes a style.  In my opinion there is no mmo out right now that matches AIONs style.  However, there seem to be 4 in production using the same style.  Mabinogi: Heroes, Sword and Blade,R 2 and the one by the company of former Lineage Developers.

The style is achieved with better shaders that fakes Specular Glow, and bakes shadow and normal maps onto models generated reminiscent of Lineage 2.  Also the Environment design is done to a more detailed level then a Asian MMO, and cleaner then a Western MMO.  Finally it adds some more advanced physics processing effects that have only rescently been used on games in general such as cloth.

I would agree. The work on Aion, the attention to detail, etc, seem to be higher than what L2 has (where you can see seems on occassion between textures in land areas.

I think what happened with L2 is that it really is a AAA mmo but they were sort of between worlds as far as "just throwing something together" and really making a quality product. If you compare to L2 to the regular asian grinder that gets put together and thrown on the market it really is heads above all of them. But there still seems to be the "lack of attention to detail" as little bugs get put in the game, little issues.

These games share the same art direction.

What were you thinking? These games are from 2004, Aion isn't even here today in 2008, it will come out in 2009. Of course they don't look 100% like Aion which comes out 5 years later with new shader, cell shading etc... technologies.

Aion will be an AAA title. For this it needs its own identity. So no, you won't see another game that looks 100% like Aion, but games sharing the same art direction, yes.

As was also said above, Blade & Soul is another game that shares the same art direction. Today it is less than 50% done, it will come out in 2 (or 3) years at the earliest.
