The problem I have had while playing WAR for quite some time in closed beta is that I am not sure if it can carve itself a corner in the PVP portion of MMORPG's market that many so believe. If you want RVR there is DAOC, if you want ruthless PVP there is Lineage 2, and EVE online. If you want organized, smaller scale PVP there is WoW. And then there is the non MMORPG in Guild Wars with its well balanced PVP. Where does WAR fit it? I honestly do not know to be honest because while it has a lot of PVP elements in reality it is a jack of all trades but master of none PVP wise. While I have been critical of WoW for its focus on the arena at the same time I have to admit that it may better in the long run for there to be a focus on what the PVP is about in a MMORPG. Some might say that the various PVP activities is all part of RVR effort, and that more options is always better. It is one thing to have options but in the end humans are like electricity so they will follow the path of least resistance which results in being very little choice. For those concerned about heavy participation in scenarios that is a legit concern as you can enter a scenario very easily. While for some they would argue it is superior than how WoW handles the battlegrounds it misses the major concern. Both in the end effect "world" PVP significantly because of its easy use. And when it comes to "world" PVP yes the game is about zerg fests unfortunately so if you were hoping for coordination or skill to win out think again. Of course because of the zerg fests gear isn't that big of a focus, but in the end gear is considered part of progression in a MMORPG so having it devalued may turn off people while excite others (that is a personal preference). I do not think anyone doubted that the game would be unplayable unlike *cough*AoC*cough* other games at launch. Rather how does it fit in? I honestly do not know. Some WoW PvPers are looking for something new to play and yet you will find differing opinions. On one hand some WoW PVPers will say if it looks and plays like WoW but has better PVP so they are all for it. While others are simply tired of playing WoW and want a brand new experience. The game plays like WoW in many facets (except for public quests, keeps, etc) so either that can be a major turnoff for those jaded by WoW or it can be welcomed with open arms.

Pretty simple actually, for anyone that actually wants to have fun with a game and not worry about grindfests/raiding and all the other crap. |
