Ask a question and you are stupid for 30 seconds, never ask and you are stupid for life.

Say compared to EQ/LOTRO or/and WoW...how big is the world?

Recently trialed Tabula Rasa and left since the world felt too small.

Ryzom looks awesome, I'll probably end up giving it a try. But I heard that the world wasn't very large...is this true?

I played the trial and was able to get of the island last night... It's pretty big just looking at the map. It's a hell of a lot bigger than TR.

The Atys world is broken into several different zones: forest, desert, jungle, etc. Each of these zones has areas for lvl 1 to level 250, so each zone feels pretty big. There is also a "Prime Root' area that is shared between the zones.

Playng LoTRO, I would say that each Ryzom zone is about 1/2 of the normal area, except there are 4 of them, plus the prime roots. You also have to consider weather: each zone has different appearances for the seasons, so multiply that area by another 4x. Ryzom feels large.

One of the major features of Ryzom is the 'alive" world of Atys. Seasons change, and what is today snow covered and bleak, is in springtime covered in flowers. If you dig resources, Atys fights back, and you can easily die while digging. Mobs range far and wide, so you cannot count on the enemies just standing around like in other MMO's.

Nostalgia is bad.

The problrem with TR is that it just seems like a series of maps, like a FPS, which it is to some extent. As for Ryzom, I'm still on the trial island atm. Looking forward to getting to the mainland soon.

Compared in raw size I´d say Ryzom is about 3/4 of WoW right now, was about the same size as Azaroth before Burning Crusade. If the Ring would be re-developed and fixed it could outgrow all others easily though, with player created regions and ideas.

MMORPGs are a business like a dairy-farm. You try to get out the maximum of milk with a minimum amount of moo. It seems all we get these days is moo.

Ryzom, we dare to be different.
Do you dare to adapt?

One other thing about Ryzom areas/zones.

The Dessert, Jungle, Forest areas are all one zone each. There are areas split up basically into every 50 levels, 0-50, 50-100... 200-250. But there is no zoning between them.

The Lakelands areas are different with portals into seperate valley areas for the different level areas except that the cities area is larger and has multiply levels iirc.

The PR areas have 2 zones that are each seperate ( lev 150-200 and lev 200-250 ), 1 zone that has 2 lev 100-150 and 2 lev 150-200 areas. and 1 zone that has 3 lev 200-250 areas.

There is also a Nexus zone which is a lev 150-200 forest zone that has portals to 3 of the PR zones.

There are portals between the different civilizations ( terrains ). Such as from Desert to Jungle and Desert to Forest -- both of which are like desert to desert feel as there are portions of an area that are desert in both the forest and jungle terrains. The Lakelands to Forest portal also has a good feel. The portals down into the PR areas also have a rather nice feel to them and get you ready for the adventure to come.

So the feel in Ryzom is much more of being in a connected world vs zoning to level areas.

I can't really compare to those other games, not having seen enough of them to get a feel for it.

But I can say that I've been playing for a year and a half (minus the down time) and have much still to see.

As someone pointed out already, there is seasonal changes in Atys which boosts nicely the world immersion. Its not effecting only to visual change but also behaving the mobs and the ground resources. Its still great to log online and found out that flowery summer has finally come

Thats the great thing about Ryzom, you can be anything you want... anytime you want.  Whatever suits you best for the day, do it.  Glad you made it to the island, it only gets bigger and deeper on the mainlands.
