Hello. I recently bought Vanguard and I'm awaiting a new laptop that I ordered. This laptop has 2 dual 9800m GT's in it. I am wondering if Vanguard benefits from SLI mode.

I'm really excited about joining the Vanguard universe as it looks like a game that is really starting to ripen.

Well fiddlesticks. I'm still excited though. I hope I will have no problems.

Silius explained at Fan Faire this weekend that neither SLI nor multi-threading are utilized at this time.  Apparently there is a tremendous amount of reprogramming that would be required for those features, and their focus has been on better playability for all systems.

I didn't get the impression that we'd see these features any time soon, as there's still a lot of work that they want to do with optimizing and improving other areas of the game.

SLI and Crossifre work with vanguard only in cards that occupy ONE PCi-E slot (dual GPU solutions) namely the following three:

Nvidia 9800GX2

ATI HD3870X2 and ATI HD4870X2.

There is no official statement of why this has come to be but it was tested and proven by various users in the vanguard forums - performance sections (including yours truly).

I had a 9800 GX 2.  I just got my GTX 280.

The 280 runs Vanguard better than the GX 2 did in SLI mode.

If the GX 2 is not run in multi-GPU (SLI) mode, then only one of its GPU's is being used and only 512 MB of RAM.   So you do naturally get better performance if you turn on SLI mode.  That's not due to any SLI optimizations, though.  It's just because more processing power as a whole is being applied to the screen, and more video RAM for textures, etc.

In a game that's optimized for SLI, the GX 2 outperforms the GTX 280.  But because Vanguard doesn't let SLI split the screen rendering into two parts, the GTX 280 does outperform the GX 2 with this game.

SLI works in VG regardless of how many slots you occupy.  It isn't an issue of working.  It is an issue of it providing any advantage.  While it works game performance is not improved by it.

I personally think given the work and the future or SLI type stuff it is really a waste to try to support it and to buy it.  I think the future is gonna be in multicore GPUs which build the multicore capabilities into the driver.  I think Intel will have the first card to do this on the market soon and you can bet Nvidia and ATI will follow suit soon.

Multicore CPU support would be the area I think VG would most benifit from in terms of bang for the effort.  Hopefully at some point they can look at this.  However, as anyone who has tried creating multithreaded code can tell you it is a very difficult thing to take a program and make it multithreaded...
