St. John, Mo. -- A man who robbed a video game store at gunpoint Wednesday told the clerk he was doing it to save his family, the St. John Police Department said.

Police said the incident took place around 6:35 p.m., at an EB Games store located in the 9000 block of St. Charles Rock Road, about 14 miles from downtown St. Louis.

The suspect went into the store, picked out a video game and approached the counter to check out. He pulled out a small handgun and told the store clerk that his family was being held hostage and that he needed a Playstation 3 in order to have them released.

As he left the store, the suspect told the clerk to call the police, because his family needed help.

Police arrived shortly thereafter, but the suspect had fled the scene.

Well, if he really did need it to save his family, I guess it's a good thing the guy didn't want a Wii.

I don't get it to be honest. Why would anyone hold a family hostage for a PS3. A PS3? Why? Why not cash or bonds or jewelry or anything that holds real value?

If you have the guts to hold a family hostage you should have no problem stealing a PS3.

Well, if he really did need it to save his family, I guess it's a good thing the guy didn't want a Wii.

If he was telling the truth, and the bad guys just seen that news, he's a dead man anyway.

Using inside information from a bank employee, the gang kidnapped a guard’s family and forced the guard to open the bank’s doors. But just in case the “we’ve got your family and we’d be happy to off them” tactic wasn’t convincing enough, the group decided to ensure the poor guy’s cooperation by strapping explosives to him. Apparently, it was pretty effective. Once inside, the robbers removed the film from the surveillance cameras, emptied the vaults of 160 million francs, and took off in several vans including one belonging to the bank."

I remember that! The incident also spawned countless fictional imitations on cop and detective shows everywhere.

To the OP, if I were going to go through the effort of holding a man's family hostage and forcing him to rob a store, I'd probably make him grab a Wii instead. Those things are hard to come by, I figure the kidnap plan is probably the easiest way to get one these days.
