You can buy a "starter pack" for about $2; this will give you the base game but no expansions. Any new FFXI account gets the first month free before you start paying subscription fees; unless you level like an obsessed madman, you won't need the expansions your first month or so of play, so that's a month to find out if you like it for $2 total cost.

Okay, I've been crawling all over the FFXI website and don't see anything at all about a $2 trial.  Would you have a link or further information?

Gamestop.

Includes data for the base game + all expansion packs (excluding the registration codes for the expansions).

Note that

a) you'll have to buy the expansions (or a Vana'diel Collection) to get the codes; the starter pack just means you already have them installed and ready to go when you do, which is convenient.

b) The starter pack does *not* install the latest expansion, Wings of the Goddess, as it was released before WotG came out.
