This from the official site. You find it here. "Jack Emmert, Cryptic Chief Creative Officer, said players will begin "Star Trek Online" as the captain of a small Starfleet or Klingon Empire ship. They can customize their characters from pre-existing "Trek" species — from Klingons to Gorn — and can create entirely new alien races. As they progress through the game, players can increase in rank and gain larger vessels and more crew." So no cooperation on the bridge with your friends ? I'm guessing I'm not buying this game. "We had a friendly relationship with them," Emmert said. "As it became apparent they weren't going to continue to function, they decided to sell off the license. We swooped in and grabbed it. We took no assets. There was nothing to be had, to be honest. We're building everything from the ground up." Ouch...hehe

"Give me control of a nation''s money and I care not who makes the laws" |
this is a nightmare. Not unexpected though as their previous work (CoH) is about as complex as a paper towel. It will probably work great on consoles, its intended audience. |

It''s not that I''m afraid to die. It''s just I don''t want to be there when it happens. |
Originally posted by Xris375 I dunno. When I read this I get something totally different from it. When it says you can be captain of your own ship it can take a very broad meaning. Yes, it could mean you are the only player on your ship but it could also mean that as a starter ship you are captain of a one man ship. You are technically still captain of the ship even if you are the only person in it. Also a captain can be an officer of any rank, be they an Luetenant (sp), Commander, Captain, Admiral or a Commodor. If you are in command of the ship you are still the ships captain. I think it's a bit early to write a eulogy for this game before knowing more about it. Some people for some reason want this game to crash and burn for whatever their reason (or lack of). I'm guessing that the preview this weekend will shed more light on how the game will operate. |

Somehow I knew in hell there would be mushrooms. |
I agree with keltic, there is nothing to worry about from that short interview. It could mean starting out as the captain of a shuttle, or some other equally small vessel, just like starting out in EVE. It doesn't mean we will be well established captains given Galaxy class cruisers or Birds of Prey from the start. |

Is Jack Emmert doing a Daron Stinnett? They took no assets? Funny that, I wonder if anyone else can spot why. |

Cynical? Me? Never. |
Yea, I have bad visions about a squad of ships running depthless missions in instanced space for eternity. No thanks, Cryptic. Admittedly, that has more to do with Cryptic rather than the interview. |

I don't see why everyone is crying foul already. We have yet to see gameplay footage and honestly, no MMO to date has implemented "permanent groups" very successfully as that sort of gameplay and feature only works when players of that group are on at the same time. What happens when the "captain" or the "engineer" of your player crew is offline? Would AI have to control them? How does that function in space? How does that function on planets? Or worse, what if the "pilot" members of your player crew weren't on? I bet thats a nightmare. So, its probably smart to just say, everyone is a captain of their own ship and has their own AI driven crew(which could be interesting gameplay because that could potentially mean things like recruiting, micromanagement of your crew, etc....) But who is to say that they won't allow players to "crew together" during gameplay sessions. So in a pvp scenario for examples sake, was that ship that just kicked your butt controlled by a single player and AI crew members or multiple players working together?
As far as Cryptic and their past project goes..... No, CoH didn't really have a lot of depth when it came to some gameplay aspects. However, the things they did do, they did well(character customization, combat, zone design, smooth release, updating the game with free add-ons). And lets not forget, they attempted to add depth to the game through things like pvp systems, inventions, fortresses, etc.... though some of them just didn't pan out well long term. I mean, really, would you rather have a new MMO company tackle STO instead of a company that has successfully launched a MMO and has learned a variety of lessons from it? If anything, I think Cryptic is probably one of the more better choices for this game given the fact that CoH in many ways, was a departure from typical MMO standards.

Yes, I had that link while blogging about it as well. From this article I can glean they are going the Earth and Beyond route of gaming or Bridge Commander Online. Maybe they will have instance scenarios on your own ship, but it doesn't look like they want to try new ground like having players on a player run ship dynamic. That would be going where no one has gone before. On the plus side development goals will be easier to meet. On the negative side, it will have little innovation. |
