I think wishful thinking is common among us gamers.  We see it in development, we hear the beta is awesome and even the artwork on the box looks good.  Then, we take it home and totally tanks our expectations...but we keep playing because "it has potential".  I'd like to know what games you've played for the sole reason that "I can see it getting better".

For me that game was Everquest.  I'm not here to razz on the game, there are plenty of those who love it, but I stayed playing for that sole wrong reason.  After about a year, I was finally dragged away from the mere possibility of improvement.  I found I was much happier in another MMORPG.  Anyone else played a game solely on expectation?  What was the game?  What did you hope for and expect?  How long did you continue playing it?

Cry Havok; and let loose the dogs of war.

Acta Non Verba

I think everyone playing vanguard, AoC, and soon War will be playing it because of what it MIGHT become.

Any new or returning player to WOW, send me a PM for some help getting started.

not me.

I played UO from beta until a few months after AoS.    I loved everything about the game and had fun.

I played WOW from beta until present time.  I love almost everything about the game.  There are things I think could be better, but I enjoy them a lot right now ( battlegrounds).

I greatly look forward to expansion and content updates, but if I weren't enjoying the game right now, then I wouldn't pay right now.

I scratch my head at the people playing AoC and paying hoping it will someday be fun.   Being hyped about a game that hasn't launched yet is ok, but blind dilusion regarding a bad game you are currently playing is just insanity.

Ever play a game because of what it might become?

Only one time, when I was about one week into closed beta Star Wars Galaxies because at that time I was looking forward to becoming a Jedi, that changed quickly as soon I saw the many profession the game offered which to me where far better then trying to become what eventually most wanted to become, I choose different, Jedi was the least thing on my mind when the game eventually was released.Well NGE happened and no need to go into that as I left (did return and had fun for 8 months last year) and  since then I only play a game if I enjoy what I am playing at that right moment, I have seen how much can or will be changed with these game continues being in development, so only if I enjoy what I currently enjoy am I playing a game, seen to much changes within this genre to stop looking ahead or read promises as facts . And as forums like this show that many people really put HOPE into a game which often results in disappointment.

SWG was like that for me because I could see the potential it had.

Unfortunately, the potential never came close to fulfillment, mainly because the entire project was managed by greedy Ferengi asshats.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I started playing Lineage II at its release, and it seriously lacked content, but I did some PK runs with my guildies in death valey, and something told me that the PvP in that game was going to get really fun, even tho many were complaining cause of the lack of content, I saw potential and I played for 4 years.

Vanguard probably has the most potential to be something amazing out of any MMO out there now, and its finally showing it. That's what I've been waiting for.

Star Wars Galaxies because it had all the mechanics in place but just needed the polish, however SOE's idea of polish is to ruin it........
