yes i am a vet and yes i would love to see classic servers for this game.  however being a gamer i dont like to see my fellow gamers forced into gamelessness in the middle of a MMO winter (same old games coming out over and over).

i see the most likely situation that will arise is Lucas Arts canning SOE's SWG license as soon as this new MMO comes out.  what are your views on this?  how should SWG proceed? what games will you move to (some will even if SWG stays afloat)

i feel this community needs to have a voice in this new MMO and needs some help in dealing with this news.  ex Auto assault players would know how hard it is to suddenly (without your consent) stop playing an MMO that you have poured time into

SWG may not be the best MMO out there but it sure is different.  and in this MMO winter thats always a good thing

edit: added in the last line

MMO wish list:

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

me and 250k of my friends can''t be wrong BRING BACK PRE-CU SWG AND FIX MMOS

7/18/08 7:49:13 AM#2

there is no future unless the game is rolled back to swg pre-cu

$OE knows that i bet the game gets shut down in a month or they trash hoth and work on the rollback.

Considering LA just granted SOE a license for the upcommining "Legends of the Force" game, I think it's unlikely SOE will be losing their license to Star Wars anytime soon...

I'm really not sure how LA will handle this. My gut tells me that they may indeed have a timetable for SWG's sunset, and it may have something to do with their contract with Bioware and some kind of exclusive SW license.

But certainly SWG will take a huge hit from any kind of new SW MMO competition even if it isn't shut down by LA or SoE. As I've been warning for 3 years now if you make a game easy to jump into you're equally capable of jumping out again, and I think this will be exactly the case with SWG.

Honestly, I do not know what to expect. This will undoubtedly leave the current player base in a state of uncertainty, and the bleeding of players will likely increase in the next few months unless SoE does something drastic like lower it's subscription price or introduce classic servers. In any event SoE will be forced into some kind of crisis mode.

The next couple of months will be interesting to say the least. This will definetly be a dramatic time for SWG.

If LA doesn't pull the license from SOE (And why should they? Players that want to switch games will do so and LA earns money that way and those few who stay in SWG also earn money for LA), SOE will keep it running for as long as there's money in it like they do with all the other not so well received MMOs in their Portfolio.

It'll be interesting to see what happens IF Bioware is in fact working on a SW MMO.  I'll still believe it when I see it on the Bioware site.

I don't see any reason why multiple SW MMOs can't co-exist.  Obviously there are still people who enjoy SWG and they've invested a lot of their time in the game.  If the game is viable for SOE then why not keep it running?

One thought that has occured to me many times is; would people still play the game if it wasn't the only SW MMO on the market.  It would be interesting to see.

It would be interesting to see if that license is open ended or has an expiration date as we're looking at about 18 months before the Bioware MMO anyway.

Hehe,

I hope they would fix all the pre-cu bugs and balancing issues.  It'd be a lot of work.  Plus the fact that most players have moved on.  Remembering past games is like remembering old girlfriends.  You always remember them as being sexier and a lot more fun.

It is highly likely they will be losing their license for Star War Galaxies sometime in 2009 though...

It would take just as long to fix the NGE bugs and glitches since there are just as many if not more.

There will never be a roll-back or a classic server ever. The game will never be what it was so either play the game the way it is and help make it better,or go play wow or some other game ,rest assured you will never see SWG pre-cu ever again unless the emulator guys get it going in which it will never run like the old game either.

SOE also run a TCG based on Stargate, they have nothing to do with the Stargate mmo though (thank goodness), TCG's and MMO's are completely disjointed, one has no bearing on the other, try again.

Considering that the SWG "card" game is only used if you are subscribed to the game and grants ingame abilitys and rewards................................

You try again.

Statement still stands, SOE has the SG trading card game, and no rights or involvement in the SG mmo. Just because the Star Wars trading game is available to SWG subscribers now, doesn't mean it won't be open to every man and his dog later on, still proves nothing.

The future I see is...

The new MMO hits beta.  Current players try like crazy to be a part of it as everybody else.  Some will make it and drop SWG playerbase.  Maybe not by much, but some.  Others will realize there is no future for development in SWG and will unsub.  Shrinking that playerbase more.  When it goes gold, mass player loss will happen to SWG.

I seriously doubt LA will allow a competing SW MMO against the new.  If they did allow SWG to live with SOE, it will only remain as a Station Pass filler game.  I also believe it will be only the NGE.  SOE would have to spend extra money to bring up pre-cu servers.  Money that LA absolutly believes SOE will not get because they expect even the vets are going to play the new game.  SOE is not going to shut down some low pop NGE servers to accomodate pre-cu because it will just piss off any current players that may still have active accounts there.  We will never make the same mistake again.  Plus bringing back pre-cu would be admiting they did make a mistake to some that to this day still spin it as the right thing to have done.  As long as those people still run SOE, forget pre-cu.

If they did bring it back though they would have to shut down the NGE for a month.  They would have to restart all versions and everyone starts for zero in the version they prefered.  This because I doubt SOE is going to buy new servers, they will have to pull an old server(s).  There will be no development, no fixing of bugs.  It will all be "working as intended."

Then there is the whole private server issue.  A legal battle may happen there sure.  But the server source code there is original and rewritten, not pirated.  And yes there have been console ducks that have won court decisions.  It would be an interesting battle to watch.  Even if private servers lose, the source code will be out there for LAN parties and will exist in some form.  Why would SOE want to compete with F2P servers with pre-cu?

I followed the game avidly before release. Before launch the original FAQ stated that SWG would run 5 years. We just hit that near the end of June. This Bioware announcement comes out within weeks of SWG's "expiration date". I don't see it as a coincidence. If SWG had been successful, I think it would run as long as they could milk it. But it isn't. I think it's living on borrowed time. They've stopped making expansions for it after all. I think they'll kill it off once the new MMO is up and making money. They're targeting a 2009 release. Why not give SWG one more year to save face for LA and SOE? They can drag up the old FAQ and say SWG was only supposed to run 5 years but it lasted 6! lol

The KotOR MMO has been in development a long time. It makes me think LA gave up on SOE several years ago and let Bioware run with the license. Can two SW MMOs compete? If they were both good. SWG's a zombie looking for a final grave. But I'm a bitter pre-pub 9 jedi, so.

Dude the "cards" are not physical cards, you can only get them if you are currently subscribed to SWG, the rewards only enhance your characters in SWG.

The only involvement of the game is as a mini-game within Star Wars Galaxies.

Fu-tu-re? Future of SWG? Are you delirious?
SWG died with the CU and was buried with the NGE.
Have you been living in a cave the past couple of years?

There is no future for something that has already failed miserably.
I would be surprised if the game even had 50 000 subscribers on all of its servers combined.
Its a graveyard in there. There is practically nobody. I don't even know why in the world would the very few individuals who are still subscribed to that piece of *censored* *censored* that is *censored* and deserves to be *censored* *censored*  choose to PAY real MONEY monthly for something that is not even worth the price of the its Cd-rom.

SOE must all be completely insane for still charging money for this scam.

The Legends of Norath card game has a stand alone component.  The Star Ward version will too, as soon as it is shown to have no effect on the subscription numbers.  With the confirmation that Bioware is making a new Star Wars MMO, SWG's future is even bleaker than it was based on the small player population.  Enjoy the game while it lasts.
