Mark Jacobs restated the fact that if the game needs new classes to fill the gap after the cuts, and needs more time to complete these new classes then they would still have the option to delay the game.

Well, I can tell you this much regarding the changes we announced today:

1) The cities are better than they would have been if we didn't make this change. They have so much more cool stuff in them and they really are something quite special.

2) The classes we removed weren't cutting it. By removing classes that wouldn't have worked well at launch we will have fewer problems and issues to deal with after we launch. That will make for a better experience for the player.

3) If the way the realms are set up now do not work in this next stage of beta, we will find a way to make them work by either working with the existing classes or delaying the game again until we find a way to make it work with new or modified classes.

4) I've always said that this game will ship when it's great, I've never said it will only ship if it has 24 classes, 6 cities, 5210 quests, etc. Nothing has changed about that. If the game is great and ready to be launched, it will be launched. If it isn't, it will be held back.

5) As to WAR still being great for PvP players, I hope that what we've done will make it better for PvP players, not worse. A PvP player wants to, of course, PvP. If the fronts were too spread out, the city sieges too long in between occurrences, etc. PvP players would be the most disappointed. Frankly, I think these changes will make the RvR action in WAR more intense and city sieges happen more often. If we're wrong, we'll fix it before we launch.

6) We are in the process of opening new servers and letting in tens of thousands of people in this next stage of beta. If we didn't have faith in the game, that is the last thing we would do. It's because we have this faith, buoyed by the feedback we've been getting in beta so far, that I know WAR will be a great game when it's done.

As always, wait to see what happens and draw your own conclusions from what you see.

Mark

Time flies like an arrow.

Sounds like they are setting up for another delay.

I am not sure if they are planning a delay I think they were just trying to quash some of the negativity about the cuts, by saying don't worry if this doesnt pan out we will throw some classes in and if we need to delay a little to get em right we will.

I think they are not planning a delay and are failry commited to an early Fall release IMO.

I certainly wouldn't mind a delay if it meant getting the other cities and cut classes done. Of course I really didn't mind the cuts to begin with...I feel for the people whose classes got cut. But don't feel the Capital cities were a big loss.

Somehow I knew in hell there would be mushrooms.

No delay. Let the WAR begin already.

Ok... "when it's great", that's not a bad thing. I want a great MMO.

There is nothing you can say that hasn''t been said...
John Lennon, 1967

In reality, WAR will most likely will continue as planned.  However, if for some reason it is once again delayed, truly does that surprise you?  At this point, WAR is in a delimma as so far as the time frame for release.  Now, it will be sandwiched between the previous release of AoC, (..and all the negative feedback after that release) and the upcoming pre-Christmas release of WoW's Wrath of the Lich King.  It's a tough spot to be in, to be sure.  If WAR delays until early next year to assure that ALL aspects of the game will be available at release, then it once again will deal with new games in release once more.  TCoS, Aion, and, possibly Stargate Worlds should see release in North America sometime early in 2009.

Not an easy decision, if you are lead developer or CEO of Mythic, but eventually it must release and either enjoy fame and success upon release, or endure hateful venom if deemed released too soon.  What do you do?  We know that WotLK will be fairly smooth and bring booku hype with it.  Many will return and most already in game will stay, at least for 6 to 8 months. This we can almost "bank" on.  If you were lead dev or CEO what would you do?

Truly, if you believe in your product and have faith in a fan base that has been there for years, then you go for it.  Is there really all that missing that WAR won't be playable?  I seriously doubt that, if all those of you who have been building emotionally for this game for so long truly want it to be so.  Do you all have faith to back this product, do or die?

We shall see...Good luck to all those involved with Mythic in the upcoming months!

From a business standpoint, another delay would be a really poor decision.  The marketing people at EA are not idiots, they recognize that within the next few month is the best time period for a successful release.  Competing with WoW and the WotLK expansion is not sound business.  It's best to draw players away when they are bored with the current content.  If having less features at release produces a successful game that raises the MMORPG bar for the industry in the long run, I'm all for it.

Now there is certainly a caveat to this.  If the game is simply not polished enough or not fun enough to release within the next few months, it would be worse to release early than it would be to postpone and release with more competition.  Only the developers know the true state of the game though (the beta testers may have a good idea, but they don't know everything about it).  We will have to rely on the developers to make the best choice, and I'm sure they will as they want the hard work they put into creating WAR to yield a successful game.
