Yes, I must admit it was not one of the most in-depth nor interesting interviews ever, and it did not reveal any new information, but, all the same, thanks for the link!

Something, something, something.... Dark Side!

Barnett: We weren't going to have levelling. We had a different progression system. But people want to know, "How powerful am I and how powerful is he?" So we just gave players levels - clearly that is the answer, and it's what they want.

Interesting.... They were going for a diff progression system... Man! That would be interesting! Instead, because of the players, we will again have levels and wow and eq2 and aoc and crap! And nothing will ever be different... cuz players want the same! They want to see level 38 besides their char name... they want uberduber gear, and weapons that give 3.9% to their intelligence and +3 to willpower... YAY!

Thank you beta testers for letting everything stale...

I would not blame beta testers...

Remember how the 40-rank system was announced, oh, perhaps two years ago? This part of the game was fundamental and was decided on before the game was likely even playable, especially by beta testers.

In the initial sketchings og the game they may have, at one point, thought about a non-level progression, but it was abandoned shortly into development.

In short, no one outside of EA Mythic, and likely no one even within, ever played a version of WAR without the rank system.

Yeah, I heard those rumors waay back - WAR being a level-less game... and that originally made me stand up and notice it.

However, the REASON Barnett gives for introducing levels is quite valid - instant recognition of relative player power.

The impression I get from WAR at this point is that it actually is a "level-less game in disguise". You're supposed to reach max level pretty fast when the real progression begins in the form of renown ranks, guild ranks, tome unlocks etc. In addition the power level curve is supposed to be quite a bit less steep that the norm. No "level 30 has no chance whatsoever against level 40 here".

I suppose tiers 1 and 2 are going to go by so fast you can consider them a tutorial part of the game. At tier 3 the chicken mechanic doesn't work anymore so it is reasonable to assume that a T3 character has a chance against a T4...

In addition T4 areas are almost as large as all the other tiers put together (or maybe much larger) so I suppose WAR will try to get you to the "level-less" part of the game as fast as possible and keep you there.

Renown ranks start at early stage.  It is not a leveless game, the grind of grinding levels and renwon ranks starts preety early, and no it is not easy to level up, shall i tell you why?  Because before the focus testing started I actually tried my hardest to lvl up a choppa the highets i got to was lvl 30 and that was just a pure pure pure grind like ive never seen.  Made my eyes bleed.
