Live and Learn.. Then Die and forget it all.

Hello all,

I have recently returned to Vanguard to see how far the game has come since the last time I played it. The game has come a long way as far as gameplay and I will get into this in a moment.

First off I would like to mention that since the last time I played VG I have built a new gaming rig so I am sure this has helped as well. I was able to run VG decently on my old system but it was on balanced where now I run full blast with everything.

Now on to what I have experianced so far. The gameplay itself has greatly improved, crashes are non-existant for me which was nice to see. Everything has run very smoothly, there is still some lag here and there but my FPS has never dropped below 30 and compared to what used to happen this is an improvement.

Chunk lines - ahh the dreaded chunk lines, well, they have improved but yes you will still notice when you hit one. I do like the fact that the mini-map does show where chunk lines are so you know when to expect crossing one. The lag associated with the chunk lines has been improved quite a bit, the most pause I have gotten at a chunk line is maybe 1.5 sec, most even less. I actually went through a chunk line the other night and it went through smooth, no pause at all so they seem to be on the right track. On a side note, I can deal with a small pause over a loading screen anyday.

Quests - Quests are all over the place now, more so then I remember. I have yet to see a bugged quest out of all the ones I have done since I have been back. Even a greyed out quest will give you completion xp, though you wont get xp for greyed out mobs.

Mobs - This was a big complaint I had way back in the beginning. There seemed to be a big problem with the dot system on mobs back in the day. I could be 5 levels higher than a mob but if it had more then 2 dots I had problems killing it, totally unacceptable. Now it seems they have corrected this problem as I will easily take out any mobs lower then my level. Mobs still chase you for long distances, though I really cant say this was ever a glitch as I think this is how they intended it to be. You better make the right decisions or be prepared to run your ass off.

Rift system - The rift system is like a portal, you use it to get to other places fast, most all cities and even some small towns have a rift in the area. This to me was a great addition even though some of the so called hardcore players do not like it. I say to them, well, dont use it. Yes I play the game to explore and I will do so when I feel like it but there are times in game when you want to get to a friend to quest, run a dungeon or maybe short on time and the rift system now allows players to get somewhere fast! If someone uses it all the time, well, thats their choice, others prefer to take 30 min to get somewhere if not longer. The point is it is there if needed.

Glitches - I will not lie to you and why should I? I do not work or get payed by SOE so I have no problem mentioning bad things in a game if I experiance them. Since I have been back I have somehow fallen underneath the world at least 3 times, twice in the same area. Well let me rephrase that, once I fell into a rock, the other 2 times I ran through the mountain side and ended up under the world. The mountain side incident happened in the same place and it is now documented so hopefully they get it fixed. The /stuck command works great everytime, within 60 seconds you are moved to the nearest respawn point.

Leveling / XP - Leveling has definately been adjusted, as well as xp. Leveling is a lot easier then it used to be, granted I am only in the 20's and I am sure it slows quite a bit as I get higher, but my overall experiance so far is it has become easier. I have limited time to play MMO's anymore and even with my limited time I have gained 3 levels already.

Population - I think this is higher then people think it is. You have to remember VG is huge and yet everywhere I have gone I run into people. Will I see large amounts of peeps like in WoW or other games? NO. But I do see a few everywhere I have gone. Chat is always active in every area and for the most part people are very helpful anytime someone asks a question. I am currently in a guild with over 235 people and even during my game times of 1am to 3am EST we have 10 to 20 peeps on.

Overview - All in all I have had a great time since I have returned. I will be re-subbing for sure right now as I feel the game has come a loooong way since last time I played. Is it finished? Far from it, but I like the way SOE seems to be headed with the game. I do not usually give SOE a thumbs up but they have done a damn good job so far with VG so they deserve a little recognition.

I could go on but the post is getting a little long so I will end it for now, however if you have any questions feel free to post them and I will gladly answer them.

As long as your enjoying the game and having fun, then thats all that matters.

Pretty much sums it up quite well. I have run into one bugged quest at level 5. Does your new build utilize raid HD's? If not you should consider it. It will help chunks load faster reading from 2 hd's at once.

At the moment I do not run a raid with HD's though I am considering it but like i had mentioned a 1 sec delay doesnt bother me a bit, and that isnt always happening so to me its a small thing.

I had a question from a PM so thought I would answer it here for others to see as well.

How bad is gold farming or spamming in Vanguard?

To be honest I have never seen any, NONE, spammers in chat in any area I have been in. Do they exist? Well that I couldnt say but I am sure someone somewhere is farming gold and selling it, but I have never seen any spamming messages about it like you see in other games.

As long as your enjoying the game and having fun, then thats all that matters.

There are three kinds of people - those who can count, and those who can''t.

Very fair review from the OP, VG became a great game for sure.

but as a more "hardcore" player, i wish :

1 . The rift teleport system was removed, & more emphasis put on boating &  regular modes of transportation

2. The KOS faction system was put back on
