Need a game that will allow me to Rob and Kill other players...can I Rape the corpse aswell?

Bioware MMO Scheduled for 2009
 

Austin branch will power online game with CIA technology.

 
Way way back in late 2006, Gordon Walton and James Ohlen of Bioware Austin spoke with the GFW crew about their upcoming MMO. With little actual development started, the team expressed their desire to create an MMO that would feature "a level of storytelling that's equal to the single-player box games that BioWare has done." A noble goal indeed, but since then we've had no progress reports on how the game is going... until now.

A new article up at Information Week (via Develop) has a whole lot of new tid-bits on the technology that will be backing Bioware's MMO.

For the MMO, Bioware will be employing a new type of technology called StreamBase, a type of "complex event processing" that has also caught the attention of U.S. intelligence agencies. StreamBase was developed through funding by In-Q-Tel, an investment firm that specifically supports technology that the CIA is interested in.

The complex event processing will serve Bioware by analyzing events taking place in their world at a rate of up to 350,000 messages a second. From there, the tons of mini-events can be cut into groups based on timeframe or type. This will allow for natural, smooth adjustment of the game world to the number of players and their actions as well as help in monitoring when certain players are causing problems. Bioware technical director Bill Dalton expects the new technology will allow their game to "do more than match" the current expectations of MMOs with titles such as World of Warcraft.

The game's name and setting remain unannounced, but Bioware did confirm that they're currently planning for a 2009 launch. According to the article, the development of the title has also been split between the Austin, Texas studio and Bioware's Edmonton, Canada studio.

I remember hearing tid-bits about streambase a little while ago in a digital forensics class... it seemed like interesting stuff.

with these kinds of features the ability to take a single-player RPG style game and turn it into an MMO without it losing its sheen or luster is quite possible. It keeps the world moving, new things happening, etc. That could be hot... riding down the road or in a building or something and you hear over the radio that such and such is taking place, you go there, take care of it and that it for that, and move on to something else.

hot stuff indeed.

Bioware's MMO to Launch in 2009

Kotor It might be Knights of the Old Republic Online, or it might be something else entirely. But the MMO in development at Bioware's Austin, TX studio is most assuredly a big deal, according to a report by Information Week published today:

Bioware has not announced the name or described the nature of its online game, but [Bioware Technical Director Tim Dalton] said it will be launched in 2009. Dalton said his firm wants to do more than match the state of the art represented by such online games as World of Warcraft.

This tidbit was hidden in a story about the event processing engine that the studio will use in its upcoming MMO. So there you have it: 2009. It's not that long of a wait, is it?
