Been thinking... pondering... what happen to the world of mmo..... isit really been degrate so bad that most of them can't make it.... Is non-instances mmo bad?.... is too much instance mmo bad?...... Is level base mmo bad?..... Is skill base mmo bad?....... Is sand box mmo bad?........ Is casual mmo bad? ....... Is solo mmo bad? Is raid centric mmo bad? ............... Is pvp centric mmo bad? Why are there fanbois and haters??? How come?!!!! How come bascially most of the mmo that comes out is so bad? How come most of the mmo that comes out we can't play for long? Isit really that the company ran out of ideas? Isit because they are not or they are WoW clone?
What happen? why are we suddenly being so negative? That when a mmo comes out, only a few will survive ? Whats wrong when a mmo that is being like by millions? And whats wrong when its not?! Been thinking.... and i believe that the problem lies with ....... Us! WE! the gamers that when we have nothing better to do, when we have no social life, we seek a game that can last us tens of hours, an mmo that will cater to our every needs when this real world fails. An mmo that will be exciting and bring us away from the real problem that we are facing in this real world..... What happen to our life? Why can't we just go out and meet frens and have a drink? Or just switch on the TV and watch soccer ( or other shows that you like)? Or are we just escaping... running away from something? And when i think back the purpose of a game...... its just a game... a game is just to entertain us when we are free... a game that just to occupy our time when we have nothing to do..... Why spend tens of hours on it per week? Whats wrong with it if we can't even spend an hour with it? Isit really the games problem? The mmo problem? When we seek more social contact in this age of tech but dont know how? Such that any mmo that fail to meet what we require is doom to fail? Not giving excuse to those that release beta game and expect us to pay...... Nope my fren... IT IS US!!!!!.... somehow down the road we put our own failure and expectaion on others, and in this case on the mmo company, just like some parents put their dream on their children... thereby destroying them...
It is us that need to be change...... I hope that the next time when we play an mmo, it is with the correct attitude.... That its just a game, a hobby,........... for us to spend our time when we have extra time. If not...... We shall not play....

I'll admit that I use MMORPGs and their communities to help me escape from some of the things in RL that stress me the fuck out. In an MMO I can be whatever I want to be. I can be as powerful or as cool as I want to be. There is complete anonymousity (did I spell this wrong?). Even if I'm not currently happy with MY life... I can be happy with my life inside an MMO. Sound unhealthy? It might be, but honestly I'm not playing any MMORPGs at the moment besides the occasional AoC and WAR Beta. I probably should be. |

I''m not a troll, I''m an Ogre! Ogres like trolls, Me thinks dey taste great BBQ''ed! |
I think it has a lot to do with expectations, gamers have what they personally hope for or wish for with a new and up coming game and what it will play like, then on top of that the game companies build up the anticipation with slick ad's, usually combined with promises and other visual candy treats.
It's us....and them. |

It's a combination of us wanting/demanding to much and developers not wanting to turn away a single customer. You can't be everything to everyone. |

Agreed, as games in general get better, our expectations go up. At the same time, most companies want to make the most money they can, so incremental programs develop. Normally we'd all be ok with this, we've suffered through it with the pc industry certainly, but in the end, the games that go too far outside the typical box, in a good way, get overlooked or looked down on unless they have significant backing. That's where I think the "us" factor comes in! Don't look for what everyone else is playing, look for games that try to do something different, or original. But, in conclusion, remember it's a game, getting all worked up or over serious about any game is not a good thing... |

The problem isn't us the mmo community, it's dev companies themselves. Long gone are the times when MMO's stood out from one another. Where one mmo offered something for this type of player and another for that type. It's the cookie cutter mentality that has made developers get lazy and uninventive in their thinking and coding. Honestly, ever since WOW surfaced and cornered so much of the mmo genre, other dev companies have followed each other in trying to make the next WOW killer and rake in the type of money Blizzaed does. Dev companies are no longer satisfied with making a solid and unique game that will draw a sub base that is totally immersed and satisied, no matter how many that may be. They want to cater to every mmo player, so they create a game that has the same old classes with the same old lvl and grind. Let's take AOC for example. Does that game really bring anything new to the genre, or is it just another WOW clone with better graphics. What about WAR, or any of the upcoming mmo's on the horizon. I have always imagined that being differant in this genre was the best road to take. Let's not also forget that most of these game being released are being done so without all the systems and such in place. Devs are coming straight out and making players pay for finsihing things that the game should have had when launched. so i go back. It's not us the players, it's them. When they figure out that spending millions of dollars on creating a mmo that is nothing more than a copycat of all the other games on the market, they just might sit back and get back to innovation. |

Originally posted by musicmann I agree though I also think that it's getting more expensive and there is a lot more at risk now then in the old days of 2D games and even the first 3D games. It requires a lot more programmers and artists to make the game. Having a less complex game that costs less money, is less of a risk, and can be handled by a few people who may actually be game players themselves and want to try different things that havent been done. It seems that the only way that might be possible to help with this problem is to either have MMOs that are moddable by the community or make MMOs that don't have state of the art graphics, etc. Unfortunately I don't think that many people would be willing to give up great graphics like AoC for WoW graphics or even 2D graphics with a game that is different and has a lot of depth. |
