I thought I'd share this since I find it quite funny. It's one of the things I find very very wrong with SWG today, and some people actually complained about buffs pre-CU? All there was were doctor buffs that made a difference.

"Playing things I shouldn''t be playing since 1977."

Now Playing:

That's pretty insane.

I see this sort of mistake all the time from customer feedback and market research people...especially consultants.

They do things like word searches and find things like "buffs" being mentioned 5,000 times on average in a given day, and therefore conclude that the thing that made pre-CU so great was buffs.  So they add in more buffs, because they are under the impression that the players like buffs.

What they don't realize is that maybe 3/4 of these threads are, "can't find buffs," or "the game relies too much on buffs."

Or when they actually read some responses, they see things like, "I remember you'd find a hundred people in buffing lines pre-CU," and conclude that if they create more buffs, a hundred people will resubscribe.

The truth is that buffs broke pre-CU combat.  They also broke the social and economic atmosphere in the early game.  They were a contrived "band-aid" that broke immersion and balance far more than they helped.  They were like so many things in SWG: solo groups, hologrinding, AFK entertainment, defensive stacking, the rapid fire special of pwn, and fight clubbing.  Everybody knew how much these things broke the game, and knew they should be fixed, but everybody did them or exploited them while they could.

It's funny though how the NGE didn't do much to fix the problems of pre-CU.  If anything it only made the problems worse, and in new and uninteresting ways.

To be honest the effects of most of those buffs are so miniscule they're not worth the effort of getting, unless you have people right there with you anyway who can do them.  Plus most wear off in 10-15 minutes.

Really...? Since you say the effects are so minimal, why is that there's some capable of getting 40K health and well over 1K in multiple stats (prec, str, luck, agil and lots of armor)? Note the guy doesn't even have the 3-5 piece jewelry bonus nor entertainer buff nor a few other buffs.

Unless there's a screenshot to back it up, I call BS on the 40k health.  You simply can't get the required stats that high.  Even if you could, it'd be for a matter of seconds.  A number of the buffs used in that screenshot are on those short timers and have long cool downs - likely used in the screenshot for fillers.

Even so...Medics can strip buffs off people and there are plenty of debuffs that negate most buffs.  A bit of a difference from the Pre-cu buff wars ;)

I know you read the SWG forums alot, there was a thread last week with a screenshot showing 40K health, but that thread got deleted, I'll search some more on photobucket or imageshack for it.

Debuffs or not, the buff issues of Pre-CU pale in comaprison to the 3-5 rows of buffs players need to juggle to enhance their leetness. At least during pre-CU, the the doc and CM buffs/poisons/diseases required crafter made items...not 'magical' abilites. The GCW system leaves a lot to be desired and the current buff wars have certainly contributed to the poor PvP GCW particpation that is plaguing all the servers to some degree - even Chilly.

And anyone could get them back then too. To me there seems to be more to balance now than there ever was. I actually know this to be the case, you see evidence of this with the constant shuffling they've done over the last few years.
