Does anyone think that a system similar to the sphere grid in FFX will work? (to replace levelling)

i was thinking about it today and though it would awesome

Anyone else agree

HERE IS A LITTLE EXPLANATION OF THE SPHERE GRID FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT PLAYED FFX

Moving
In order to move around the grid you'll need sphere levels (S.LvL) which you will then spend as you move around. Gaining them is just like leveling up your characters in previous FFs. But now, instead of getting EXP after each battle, you receive AP.

If you wish to move from one node to another, you have to spend the same amount of S.LvL depending on how far you want to go. For example, if you move 1 step forward then you will have to spend 1 sphere level and so on.

What if you want to return to a certain part of the grid? You'll also use your S.LvL. But this time you'll be allowed to move 4 Steps Backward using 1 Sphere level.

Activating Nodes
You activate nodes that contain character attributes (strength+, magic+, defense+, etc) and abilities. Just press O then choose Use from the command window. Another menu will appear, there choose the necessary sphere to activate the node.

Stand up for what you believe; Even if you stand alone.

Actually yeah man I remember watching my girl play the game and thinking 'why don't MMO's get more experimental like this with skills and character development, I could see this working after some tweaking...'

Trying to get an MMO dev to use anything other than the holy leveling concept is like pulling teeth.

But, just so you know, the sphere grid is very linear until you finish a particular character's section. FFX International has a better grid, but the game still needs more items to fill all of those empty nodes earlier in the game instead of at the end of the game.

Overall, I miss the old Star Wars Galaxies system the most...

From what I've seen from the game and the chart you provided I would say that differences between that and WoW's system isn't very far; sure, WoW got a less complicated chart but the concept is pretty much the same.
