Connection issues can be caused by third party LSPs (Layered Service Providers). LSPs hook into Winsock, and if they are not written properly, may cause connection problems. Software firewall applications, some instant messaging add-ons, spyware and adware are known to hook into Winsock using an LSP. The solution to such connectivity issues is to identify and update the application causing the problem.

To address LSP issues with spyware and adware install and run Microsoft Defender or AdAware.. If you are an experienced user you may want to attempt the manual removal of an LSP by installing the LSP Explorer add-on for AdAware. Another option is to use LSP-Fix.

If you are a very experienced user you may want to evaluate the following information. It is possible to reset Winsock on Windows XP SP2 by following the resolution steps given in Microsoft KB article 892350. For Windows XP and Windows XP SP1 you can use one of the resolutions given in Microsoft KB article 81751.
