Quick question - if I am to buy the City of Heroes/Villains Combined Edition from the store, how many megs of patches can I expect to have to download?
Thanks :) |

Hmm, that's a hard question to answer. I'll give you my best estimate. When that version came out we were around issue 7 or 8. Right now you would have to download everything up to i11, with i12 soon to be released. (In fact it's in pre-download mode after you sign off.) I would say you should be prepared for up to 750 Mb. It may be less, but I wouldn't want you to get caught by surprise. (And part of that is me not knowing what their default behavior will be for your update - if a file expanded from 90Mb to 100Mb, will they make you download only the extra 10, or redo the file? I think only the difference, but I'm not 100%) It's a smart question. There are two steps - downloading and applying (which is why I think it only grabs the difference). In most cases, applying takes more time than downloading, if that tells you anything. Still, I find it a good idea whenever I do a new install to get it started, go eat dinner, and then come back to play later. I also recommend starting the updater before you activate your account, just to save an extra hour or two of play time. (Not a big deal in the long run, but it feels that way sometimes when you get a new game and think "my clock is ticking, why can't I play?" One other thing - if you're asking about the install, I guess you haven't tried it yet. Although it would definitely take longer, you could start from scratch with the updater and start the whole download no money committed. If you want, PM me for a trial code which will also let you play without purchase. Though I'm guessing you may have bandwidth limitation issues which is why you ask. Alternatively if you know you're going to buy the game and install, you still may want a trial code before you start because it adds time to your account. Again, if you want that just PM me and I'll send you one. Hopefully the patches aren't too much of an issue for you. This is a really great game and I think if you get the chance to see it on high resolution, you'll appreciate why the patches are so big. |

Thanks alot! I'll be picking it up soon and will let you know when I'll be needing a trial key.
The reason I'm asking is because I have a data cap on my connection, meaning that bandwidth is precious! As such I'm just estimating how much of a squeeze it's going to be or whether I'll have to pay quite a bit more and buy an extra gig of bandwidth or something. Thanks again. |
