Hi.

2.4ghz quad core

2GB ram

geforce 8600 gt 256MB

im going to throw in another 2 GB of ram but i need help with the vid card.

Im looking for the most bang for buck in terms of FPS improvement to dollars spent. im also only inclined to buy nvidia.

I used to keep up with the new techs years ago, but cannot any longer.

so, geforce 9000 series it seems to be for me. which would yield a nice boost? im not sure the differences between the GT GTS GTX.

any help appreciated. thanks.

Don't bother with a 9000 series. I reccomend getting a EVGA, as they have a step up plan that allows you to upgrade a evga card you bought for a newer one.

Will be the one I plan on buying in a few days. It is an upgraded GTS version. The older 8800GTS cards were overpriced and underpowered but the new SSC version has nice gains and is very cheap.

Most bang for buck = GeForce 8800 GT. The BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC2 is a HELLA nice card, tis the card I use and I ran everything on high in beta with about 70fps, near the same specs you have.

Upgrade ya ram to 4gig.

The 8800 GT will outperform most of the 9000 serius minus the 9800 gtx2 which is of course a 600$ card. For my 8800 GT OC2's I payed a total of about 360$ and my 2 cards outperform one Gtx2 by about 10%. I have tested both.

It's up to you from there what you do, but I recommend the 8800 GT OC2 from BFG. Hella nice card. Also upgrade ya ram to 4gig if you are running vista x64, as I didnt check to see what OS ya running but if you are, then you need atleast 4 gig ram.

I am CCNA and CCNE certified and am required to know quiet a bit about hardware, take the advice or leave it, up to you, but I do know what I am talking about, not to brag of course, just required to know it in my line of work because not only do I network but I also build/distribute computers at whatever company's request and specifications.

thanks for the link. money is not an object. however, i refuse to buy another 'bleeding edge' vid card ie. the $5-600 ones.

i would think the 9000 series would be 'better' than the 8800 series? or at least perform better in games...

thanks for the input fellas, keep it coming pls.

should i go for the 8800 or a newer 9600, 9600 gt gts gtx?

$300 would be the max, but again im looking for performance to the dollar.

2 8800GT for about $330 after couple rebates. 8800GT does better than the 9600. 8800GTS 512 (G92) is not worth the extra $100 for maybe a 10 FPS increase.

Make sure when upgrading RAM that it has the same chips in them or else you're looking at possible problems and maybe worse timings. Best sell off the old RAM and buy a new 4gb kit (Mushkin 5-4-4-12 800Mhz are amazingly good).

Sadly, the only good 9000 series card is the 9800 GX2 or w/e the hell it is. but that will cost you a fortune. The rest of the 9000 series are just value cards meant to compete with the 3000 series ati.

Leave me alone.

The 8800 gt and gts(512mb) are both faster than the 9600, and the 9800 is based on the same core as those two 8800's.
